I did a search on Amazon to see what they had for hunting mule deer. I was amazed at how many came up. I'm curious if anyone has read any muley books that they found helpful in their quest for the buck of a lifetime? Thanks,

Brady

LAST EDITED ON Aug-04-08 AT 00:47AM (MST)[p]David Long's book is great.

Cameron Haines "Back Country Bowhunting" is good as well.

Mastering Mule Deer by Wayne Van Zwoll is okay, has a lot deer biology stuff, habitat stuff and a lot of info for the total beginner for both hunting and mule deer stragies.

Mike Eastman's "Hunting High Country Mule Deer" is okay. A lot of good pics, unfortunately black and white. Mike has some off the wall theories about mule deer that I have a hard time buying. And for some reason he calls tines "tangs"? I think he is kinda of a strange dude but you have to respect anyone with his experience.

Anything by Kirt Darner is shear comedy considering recent developements. I remember reading his book when I was younger and thinking he was a mule deer legend based on the bucks he claimed he killed. He does talk about some spots in Colorado, whether or not they are good I'm not sure or if he's even hunted there or just acquire antlers there I'm not sure.

If you just want to look at big bucks check out the two books by Odie Sudbeck.
Or any of the state focused record books from Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Alberta or BC?, etc. Not sure on titles but I know at least these states have them probably all of them do I just haven't seen them.

You can get something out of each of these books, but David Longs is probably the most informative. Hope this helps

Darner left out the garage sale, flea market, and burglary chapters in his books. But, no great hunter can tell ALL his secrets.

"Deer Quest" by lance Stapleton.
This is a book about Lance as he hunted all species of deer trying to get book heads in all species, it's great and very entertaining.

He killed one his his mule deer with us and talks about that particular hunt, so it was fun for me to relive it by reading the book.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-04-08 AT 02:16PM (MST)[p]My favorite is "Mule Deer Quest" by Walt Prothero....... I like it as much for the narratives as I do for the "how to" stuff.......He's a great writer as well as a great hunter.

Seems to me the Long and Hanes books are essentially rehashed versions of Mike Eastman's "high country mule deer".....which is a good book and pretty much got me started back pack hunting or "coyoting out" if you like.

>Anything by Kirt Darner....

In case anyone didn't know it, that was said with tongue in cheek.

Having said that, even though Darner is a dirty rotten poaching SOB, his books do provide some legitimate and useful information for hunting mule deer.

Go with a WALT PROTHERO title on mule deer (he has a couple). I have read books by each author previously mentioned and many of the titles that others have listed.

Of all the authors I have read, Walt Prothero is the one I would like to sit down with to ask questions and listen.

Anyone ever read Calvin Coziah's book? I enjoyed reading it but later heard it was in the same category as Darners.

I know you asked for hunting books, but every mule deer addict should buy "Mule Deer Country" by Val Geist. It teaches the hows, whats, and whys of mule deer. You can find them on Ebay for less than $10.
