Utah Archery Spike Elk

So I am trying to plan my first Archery Hunt this year and am considering the Utah Spike Bull tag. I grew up in Utah near Ogden but moved away 18 years ago and just got back into hunting 2 years ago. I've rifle hunted for the past 2 years in Idaho but i've started building points in Utah I know I am years away from my basically "once in life time limited Entry Elk" but really want to hunt in UT. The spike bull tag looked appealing to be able to hunt the limited entry units and also the option of taking a cow. I am looking at the Southwest Desert Unit to start due to its proximity to my home in CA and ability to get in a scouting trip or two. I know nothing about that unit and would appreciate any input on SWD or the spike tag or any other advice for a new archery hunter planning a first time hunt in UT. If there is better unit for a new guy I'm all ears. I will likely be hunting solo too.

Thanks,

Definitely get out here & learn the unit(s) while you build points. Plunk a few spikes/cows along the way to gain some confidence.

Not familiar with SWD at all, great bulls come off it though.
