So i have max points for the late rifle bull elk hunt on the la sal mountains utah, im gonna put in for it, has anyone hunted over there? any info about it would be greatly appreciated?

My wife had a late La Sal tag (nonresident)in 2015. There was quite a bit of snow that year, and my wife has limited mobility, but it was a very hard hunt for us. Most of our time was spent on the south end, and down low in the cedar, pinion areas. We saw a total of 6 elk. 2 bulls and 4 cows. She did shoot a 310-320 class bull, if he hadn't been so broken up. You hear it all the time, but it truly was last 10 minutes of our hunt. It was dark by the time we made our way up on the ridge he was on. It was a rough hunt!

I have been on several late season elk hunts on this unit over the years. I haven't been the hunter on any of them, rather just helping out. On all occasions I felt that we left no option unturned. We tried everything to find a good bull. During these several hunts, we had warm weather, snow, wind, rain, etc. and it didn't seem to matter. This is an extremely hard hunt. The bigger bulls seem to disappear, or I believe they migrate over to Colorado. If you have points, I would recommend not wasting them on this hunt. One of the hunters I was with ended up getting a spike! 2 of them ate tag soup, and 2 shot rag horns. (very raggy. How many points do you have?

LAST EDITED ON Feb-21-17 AT 07:37PM (MST)[p]I will somewhat echo ManAMen,

By the time the late season rolls around (in any unit), the big bulls have pulled back into the timbered canyons to lick their rut wounds and try to restore their fat reserves for the winter. They are hard to find and they are especially fond of wandering on to private or inaccessible land where they won't be harassed. Unless you know where they go during that time of year it is usually a very hard hunt. I have been on two and both ended poorly.

Some do well because they have access to private tracts, or know honey holes where the big bulls hang out. If you don't have that ability or intel, then beware of burning points on a late hunt.

All the above is true. But that is why the late tag doesn't take 20+ years to draw. I have helped or hunted that hunt since it started and every person I helped with the exception of one individual with very limited mobility (none) who still shot a 6 point, had chances at 330-360 Bulls. That's a heck of a good hunt in my book. Especially since it takes half the points to draw.

Thanks for all the input guys!! So I have 9 points and I ended up putting in for that late la sal tag... should be headed there this year.. I've never been one to shy away from a hard hunt so I'm ready for the challenge.. any tips would be appreciated maybe of the direction some of the better bulls move if it snows out there? Or maybe a few places to start looking? Thanks again for the input so far!

Land South of the mountain has some elk on it in the late hunt.
