Hello my name is Eric Brixey and I am one of the 5 lucky out of staters who drew a unit 2 tag for 2017 and am looking for any information that might help me. I am in the Air Force stationed in Oklahoma but I should be able to take close to 3 weeks if needed to scout and hunt. I have already contacted the three main landowners and talked to them. I have also talked to the biologist some. I'm just wanting input from anyone familiar with the area or anyone who may have hunted it. Public vs private? What you would do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again.

Eric,

That's a unit that I've been thinking about for a future year'

Wondering if you might be willing to let me know what the landowners had to say, tresspass fee amounts etc. and if you would be willing
to hang onto my e-mail address and let me know how your hunt goes.

I have read the hunting is much better on private land in that
unit and I thought it might be just a 2 week season unless that has changed.

Thanks in advance,

LAST EDITED ON Mar-01-17 AT 09:06PM (MST)[p]3 of hunted this unit in 2011, we paid trespass fees for the Powder River Ranch. At the time they were asking $500 which we thought was reasonable (they let locals hunt for free). I have no idea what they charge now, or what the deal is. Another ranch wanted something like $5K for a guided hunt, but then would let everyone on the ranch after day 5, or something like that, once the guided hunt was done. We all shot decent 6 pt bulls, with the biggest about 325. I think this unit would be real hard to hunt public land only.

It was a fun hunt, in what would be considered atypical elk country.

Ed,

I will shoot you an email with what I have learned so far and let you know how it goes this fall. The season is very short only 9 days this year.

Thanks,
Eric

JRABQ,

Thanks for the info. I have talked to powder river and they only do guided hunts now. I'm really wanting to do this on my own if I can. I found a picture of your bull on another forum he looks great congrats!

Can you elaborate on this a little more I know is is super hard to acces the private but looking at google earth I do not see why the hunting would be any better on the private as to the wilderness study area.

Thanks
Eric

I would recommend calling Erika Peckham in the WYGF Gillette office first (307-670-8164), she would hopefully have the recent contact numbers for all of the ranches. She might be able to give you some advice regarding the current access issues.

I called her before the draw to see what the tag numbers would be this year, as we were considering applying for it. But with the low tags given this year there would be no random NR tags so we made another plan. And since we had no way of drawing this unit I didn't follow up with the access issues in any detail.

She did specifically say the Powder River ranch hunts are now run by Del Jenkin's granddaughter, and they now do "more guided type hunts". When we went Del was still "in charge" and did a trespass fee arrangement. We also had this lined up before we applied that year. I had Del's number, and since he is no longer in the loop I don't think it is worth mentioning.

If you call any ranch I would ask if they let anyone hunt the last part of the hunt DYI, even if they run guided hunters first. The year we got tags the hunt actually started a few days before it was listed in the Regs. (check your license when you get it), but that was put in at the request of one ranch that did guided hunts, so he could get his guys done early. Weird situation, not sure if that is still the case.

If anyone gets access to do DYI on the Powder River I'd be happy to share the locations where we saw and shot elk, there were definitely a couple of hot-spots.
