Has anyone seen the monster Ulmer killed in Nevada yet? I saw a pict on Texasbowhunter forum and it is incredible. He's the man on monster muleys.

Damn 'zigga'......haha

'Chute! That's just plane huge. Hope he didn't break a leg in that sage brush. Nice buck!'

Pretty dang funny!

Way nice buck too.

That's an awesome buck. But you guys should see his house. I almost crapped my pants the first time I went over there, and I'm still amazed everytime I go.

Guide, chute, or not; he is an awesome hunter. If you guys had the means, you would do it too.

What a outstanding Buck,I think he would have to be at top of very short list of guys who can take Monster Muleys every year and anywhere, Plus he's a pretty good guide as well,Randy is a top notch guy period.

I met Randy Ulmer at a Cabela?s 3D match 10-12 years ago. Myself and two friends were fixing to shoot the warm up match and he walks up and ask to shoot with us. He was one of the premier professional shooters and we were surprised he wanted to shoot with us amateurs. It was a great experience. Not only was he very friendly, but he helped us with our shooting and answered countless equipment questions. I'm a better shooter today because of that chance meeting back then. He?s a great ambassador for hunting and archery. Some people are self motivated and successful in life. He?s one of these people. Don?t think some of the jealous comments are called for.

Congrats on a great buck

Zigga and Manny,

Do you guys even know what you are talking about? This is all I'm gonna say because I've seen where these posts go and I don't want to waste too much of my time. Let me say, Randy is a good friend and I am very selective with my friends. First off he has very high morals and does things the right way. You can throw in all the flying stuff but fact is NONE of the animals you've seen him with were scouted from flying. Although I personally see nothing wrong with flying to SCOUT, been done for years in various ways.
Most importantly, no one and I mean no one that I know of spends more time in the field, ON FOOT, locating and staying with the animals he hunts. He is very fortunate to have the time to dedicate to this but he made the sacrifice and had the discipline to put himself in a position to be able to do that. I respect him way more than I do the whiners who weren't as skilled or disciplined enough to put themselves in that same position to be able to afford the same opportunities.

Lastly, Randy has a lot of friends because of the quality person he is. These friends span the United States. These friends would help him with info about the areas to hunt, not any different than any of you out there that hopefully have friends to do the same ( although some of you , I question if you have any friends). He then does a ton of leg work to maximize the opportunity. Call these guys guides if you want. A lot of times they are guides...so what... his friends are often times guides becuase he is a top notch hunter like many guides. Is he not supposed to be friends with them because they are guides? Give me a break. Most of my friends are guides.. If I shoot a big animal with help from my friends I guess I should consider myself less of a hunter. Unbelievable with the simple thinking out there. Why the hate?

ANOTHER CHUTE PLANE BUCK???!

He's got some huge accomplishments and is an incredible hunter. I've got every right to throw some bs around. It's not breaking the law much like scouting from a chute plane. Is it morally wrong? Anyway, he would probably think it's funny as well. You've got to take the good with the bad sometimes. It gives us all thicker skin. It's always fun seeing his next trophy. I'm sure no one is more appreciative than him and I know we all take advantage of every resource we can get our hands on. Congratulations to him.

What did that last buck score? Private or public, Draw or OTC?

I can see why so many people feel that there is something up with this guy as he has killed many many big bucks and that is by far NOT the norm with muleys.

But you got to give the guy credit where credit is due.
Yes he has a guide but that don't guarantee anything did he use a chute plane??? I don't see that as being a guarantee

Did he use a bow?? Then hell he is doing something right.. I have found many deer that are nice and never got a chance at them with a rifle let alone archery.

Congrats to him

+1 Bubbas. Nice post.

UThunting,
I doubt he used a chute plane. He had compound fractures of his ankles after his scouting accident a couple years ago. Plus with all the crap he got for doing it, I doubt he even wants to look at one of those things again.

Randy is sponsored by Hoyt. Randy without a Hoyt or a bow, is like Chuck Adams switching to carbons and a release.

From Randy's Web site www.randyulmer.com Interview with another Forum.

Last year you had a chute plane accident. Can you explain what happened and what went thru your mind when you crashed?

I drew a tag on the AZ strip, the holy grail of mule deer tags. There is no separate archery tag for that unit, it is a rifle hunt. I'm a mule deer fanatic and I felt that this was my chance to shoot a truly giant deer with my bow. Unfortunately, this country is not conducive to bowhunting. The deer density is extremely low and much of the country is flat pinyon /juniper country. Most rifle hunters shoot their deer after jumping them up in a vehicle or on foot. That's not an option with a bow.

I went up for a week of scouting, glassing etc and found very few deer and no huge deer. I felt a little desperate and felt that the only way I could kill a big deer with my bow during a gun season was to find a big buck before the season, figure out where he was drinking and sit water. I thought the only efficient way to find a big buck in that country was to fly. I told my friend, Greg Krogh, what I was going to do and, to his credit, he begged me not to for several reasons. But I was struck with irrational exuberance. From what I had been told, many of the big bucks that are killed there are found by flying pre-season. And though it is completely legal to scout by flying, it sure feels awkward when you are doing it.

For the record, let me say that I have never found an animal from the air and then went back and killed it. I'm certainly not passing judgment on anyone who chooses to scout that way. I think it is a personal choice how one limits themselves scouting and in the field as long as you obey the game laws. In this case I think I justified it in my mind because I was hunting with a bow and was at such a disadvantage to the rifle hunters. And if all that sounds like an apology or an excuse, maybe it is.

The bottom line is I made the decision to do it and I did it. Apparently I wasn?t very good at it and crashed.

To answer the second part of your question, the only thought that went through my mind as I was headed down was that it won't be fair to my boys if I die.

I enjoy seeing monster deer, but com'on from the same guy year after year, it kinda loose's its charm...

no doubt the guy can sneek and shoot and if I met him I'd give 'em his props, but I am still Jealous, What! your not?.....

Another pig. Wow. To do that with a bow year after year on deer that size is definately an accomplishment. i would love to see his trophy room.

I'm not surprised, but am again awe struck. Randy is a great shot and hunter. Congrats to him. Another super buck. Hope he sticks another one in Colorado and we see yet another post this year.

Incredible. I am, once again, amazed that this guy can consistently get within bow range of this class of bucks. Guide or not, he's the guy stalking these big old bucks and making the shot.

As an aside, is that the entry or exit wound on the rear part of the front leg? I am guessing exit.

Saskman
His trophy room, aka living room and office, is amazing. Last time I was over there he had a 60"+ moose rack laying on the floor like it was an old bicycle. He didn't have room for it...poor guy....

Is that an awesome buck? Yes.

Does he kill incredible bucks every year? Yes.

Am I envious? Absolutely.

Have I ever killed a deer that big? Sadly no.

Nobody argues that he doesn't have incredible skills to finish the deal on monster bucks with a stick & string. Nobody has argued that he's not a nice guy. However, some will never forgive him for the chute plane incident.

Bottom line - legal or not, flying for big game in the western U.S. is not ethical, and it's not fair chase. That's my opinion and I'll stick with it.

I'm very glad to see him make the above statement about the incident on his website. I think it proves that he's a stand up guy by addressing it, and not ignoring it like a lot of people would have done.

Hopefully he takes a firm stand against aerial hunting/scouting, chute planes, etc and keeps his name clean in the future. I can tell you that he owned a chute plane long before the AZ strip incident. Did I ever see him fly it for a hunt? No, I just know he's had one for many years.

Form your own opinions from there and I'll leave it at that. Tremendous buck! Maybe someday I'll kill one. I suspect it's only the first of several monsters that he'll whack this year.

Thanks for the pic D13, What a stud of a buck - forget the score how wide is that thing?!?! Congrats to Mr. Ulmer.

Just an awesome buck, very nice! Randy Ulmer is a great hunter, a credit to all bowhunters.

20 yard shot straight uphill. 34 inches wide. He gives a lot of credit to Gary Gallegos for this buck.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-12-08 AT 08:52PM (MST)[p]What a beautiful buck, that is one hell of a accomplishment yet again. Congrats Randy, it sure would be nice just to see the pics without all the accompanying BS. Again, congrats on one fine mulie!

You guys are talking about all the big muleys Randy has killed yet aside from seeing his face on TV once in awhile, i knew little of his accomplishments. This is the first time that i could put his face, name, and monster buck hunter, all together.

Is there a pictorial viewing of his trophy room available anywhere or could someone post some other toads this guy has killed? My hat's off to anybody that can consistantly and legally take huge bucks of this caliber year after year.

Check out his website

I think its randyulmer.com

Or google it

Pretty impressive

Randy's a machine. He's a hard core bowhunter that creates his own "luck" by dedication, skill, and patience. Congrats to him on another awesome muley.

Another awesome buck...you guys ever seen a big buck with a death sentence? If you'd like to take a look at any buck Randy decides he'd like to hunt! It's amazing how he closes the deal, again and again. By the way, someone above asked if the wound you could see was entry or exit...word from the top is that the shot was 20 yards and "straight uphill", so if that is in fact an arrow wound I'd guess that's the entry.

Here's another photo:

That is another incredible Nevada buck taken by Randy. He is obvviously a great bow hunter based upon his past performance and consistency.

As a novice in bow hunting, I have appreciated his magazine articles and his tips taken from the internet. I think his insights have helped my shooting skills which will translate into better hunting success in the upcoming future.

wow what a nice buck. i might have missed the score,
does anyone know what he ended up scoring? what that buck taken in the rubie mountains?

I don't care if you have all the time and money in the world, six chute planes and a guide to fly every one of them (which I don't believe to be true of Randy anyway), if you consistently kill huge bucks like Randy Ulmer you have done something special, period!

What is ethical to one, is not to another. The only way to decide if a person is hunting in the "right" way without letting personal biases get in the way is to ask if that person is obeying all of the established game laws. Randy does as far as I know and as long as he does, he's doing it right and doing a damn good job of it. Better, I would say, than most any of the rest of us would do even when presented with exactly the same opportunity.....You can't tell me that Randy is the only mule deer fanatic with time and available funds, but he IS the only one accomplishing what he has in the way of killing monster bucks with an arrow.

Congrats on another stomper Randy! Keep up the good work.

Congrats, what a monster. I have read a few articles and seen him on TV, he seems very konwledgeable about what he is talking about. He seems to stick a monster every year, again congrats. I truely believe he knows what he's doing and put's the time and efort in, he's got too. But does everyone have the man crush!

I have been hearing everyone cry about chute planes on this site for years, scouting from planes is no different than riding your 4 wheelers and trucks all over gods country, atleast planes don't leave tracks. i don't own a plane but man what a rush it would be having grizzly's swat at ya and wolves run like hell from ya. everyone one of our huntin holes is made up of different terrain and when it's thick and flat i say run it with plane if ya got one..Randy's Ranked in the top 5 all times in my book what a freakin stud!

don't let the Az game and fish hear u say that about airplanes. They feel airial scouting is "repugnant" and don't care if they all "crash and burn"! Like other yahoos on here

His genuine smile in every picture says it all for me. He really loves what he does, and makes the most of it, and it shows.

Too many, not only in this "sport", are just so serious (or that's they're act anyway) that they forget to enjoy it.

definately a monster... The fur on the bone make it look like it has additional mass. Very nice either way...

If there is a person using a chute plan to scout, I venture to say it is not the most productive way to get the job done.

I think it can and is a productive way to get ones self killed.

Ulmer's comments and accident reflect about how productive it is.

Now, hiring thirty guides who all hang five trail cams, that could get you some production. I think that type of scouting is a lot more productive.

Regular, multi passanger planes would work better also.

I think problems would come from low flying aircraft that are seen to cause disruption in the animals.

That's a toad, congrates Randy

RE: ANOTHER CHUTE PLANE BUCK???!

Actually he didn't need a chute plane for this one. His former guide showed him the buck last year. the guide had clients in the same unit on the same hunt. Too bad some hunters think crap like this is MORALLY right.

at least give your guides some credit. don't brown nose your 2008 guide just to rub it in the face of your guide from the last 7 bucks that average a score of 206 inches. thats crossing the line.

And don't forget $ money. It takes alot of it to bring out that dedication, skill, and patience from the GUIDES that create his luck. don't be fooled that his hunts are self-guided.
