Have any of you guys been out to the Sawtooth range recently? I'm just wondering what the deer population is like now days. I used to hunt there years ago (10-12 years)and it was fairly scarce and I was told that there was an abundance of lions on the range. So now I was wondering if the population has come back or not. No, I'm not planning on going hunting out there so I'm not asking for honeys holes just wondering if the masses are back.

Thanks.

It depends on what season you are planning on hunting. If you are planning on archery or muzz you will find some mature bucks. But there are still a whole lot of hunters. The rifle hunt on the other hand is the same way as you remember. The minute the first shot goes off the more mature bucks head for the private land or the dark timber and you won't see them again until the hunt is over.

I hunted over by Grouse Creek last year. There wasn't as many hunters as I anticipated. We seen 50+ bucks. 2 small 3 points and the rest were 2 points or smaller.

To many lions and not enough people to hunt them , and with ID open season across the road they killed alot of mature bucks. one of my top 10 big bucks Ive seen was from that area back in the day

There are always tons of deer up there. Most of the time you will see 200+ deer per day and maybe one will be a buck. Lot's of small bucks. If that area had some time to grow some big bucks, it would produce some big boys. It gets way over hunted.
I have seen some decent bucks come out of Wildcat Canyon just outside of Yost, I'm telling you this because this spot used to be my favorite hunting spot but now it's overloaded with people and I almost got shot by three different hunters while cleaning a deer out. I'll probably never go there again.
2005 I saw two nice 23-24 inch 4 point come out, 2006 my freind shot a 23 inch 3 point (See pics), and 2007 I stood 50 yards from a wounded 7x7 buck. The guys that wounded it finished it right in front of me and I went and checked it out. The only time I have seen mature bucks, is when they are pushed out of the pines, that's your best bet.
