Just wondering if anyone has some information on this unit? Maybe some places to scout. I drew the 3rd rifle deer hunt. My brother and I were going to go scouting in 2 weeks. Also does anyone know how the winter kill was in this area.

Thank you

Its a tough hunt, I hunted it last year it could be good if you get some snow. There is alot of private that can cause some problems. We did not kill a deer in our group.

I've also hunted those units several times in the last few years and agree with the first post. Private can be an issue, and if you don't get the weather, the deer have ALOT of country to hide in. There is potential for a monster buck, but they are hard to come by. My hunting party has been deerless also the last two years. We're not going this year!

Pray for early snow!

Good luck

I was with the Coyote Chaser last year and like he said it was a tuff hunt. The weather conditions were terrible though, it was hot & dry. I think this unit could be great weather permitting. If you plan on hiking (which I recommend) you need to buy an elk tag. I talked myself out of buying the tag and missed an opportunity to harvest a nice 320" bull....

unit 43 is the best high country unit in the state but 3rd season is a little late for chasing those big bucks. I perfer archery or muzzleloader for that country along with 471. most of those bucks will migrate down. Take a look in hayes creek, coal basin, porqupine creek, elk mountain and brush creek near old snowmass. Just to name a few spots.

I have hunted those units three times, if you dont get snow then you will have a tough hunt, the deer will be scatter from 5000 to 10000 ft with most of the lower ground private or access being blocked by private land. We have killed a couple 180 bucks from there but most of us have eaten our tag. Make sure on planning to stay till the end of the hunt most of the people clear out by tuesday night and the deer start staying out in the open to feed a little more when things calm down. The last two days of the season have always been the best for us.

I have the 4th season tag. If anyone has any info they are willing to share, please PM.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Try to find areas where you've got transition in the vegetation - between oak brush, aspens and timber. Concentrate on those seams. There are some good spots like that in those units on public land. As long as the snow isn't too deep for the deer to browse, you'll be able to find animals.
