i have a stupid ???? about these early season bucks . have seen several pics of mule deer in velvet with that summer to fall coat change going on but every mount i have ever seen in velvet the cape has looked great. do the taxidermists use that same early season cape ?

yes

if you put a fall coat on a velvet buck it would look funny.

I love early season coats. You get more detail out of an early mount than you do for a late season mount

Archery is a year round commitment!!

depending an what you calling early or late

early summer they have a longer red hair, i think i looks bad mounted, under it the have super short grey hair, most bucks this time of year are shedding the red, and it is loose, your taxidermist will ask you if you want any of the red left,

i was going to pluck mine, but it is not loosened yet, so it will have most of it.

my wifes will ba all grey, the red just fell out,

hope that helps

With all do respects, i like the fall-winter coat and big white patched necks much better myself. I've only taken a few early season muleys but the last one was mount worthy, the coat was so "scraggley", thought for a better word, i decided not to.

My buddy last year got a nice buck in velvet but he did not find the buck until the next day and the coat was pretty bad. He took the fall coat from a decent but not mount worthy buck that another friend shot. He just got it back and I think it looks great. Some summer coats are fine for mounts but some are just to scraggily in my opinion to look good mounted.

If anyone has a early season light grey cape with no red i would really like to buy one. I have checked with several local taxidermists and they just don't have what i am looking for.
