A Twist on a Muledeer Proposal

Lately i have read a lot of different information and opinions on what people believe should be done with utah's deer herd. Most all of us will agree that something needs to be done. Some people blame the elk, some think its predators, its obvious that they are being over hunted and habitat dissappears everyday. All these things and more are really hurting our deer.

I am a trophy hunter and enjoy being in the field chasing big bucks much more then killing smaller ones. I agree with many people in the idea that if we issue less tags and are willing to hunt once every five to ten years then the amount of adult bucks would increase rapidly.

There are two big problems with that proposal.
1. We all know that the fish and game isn't willing to give up a dime. If they had to cut tags they would have to cut back on many other things as well. The fish and game needs money and there is no way around that.
2. Many people are happy shooting small bucks for the enjoyment being in the field, spending time with family and the meat. These people are not willing to give up their opportunity to hunt and kill deer every year.

I, along with many others took the dwr muledeer hunting survey online. Some of their big points were: Shorter seasons, road closure, primitive weapons and less tags. Although i would support many of those i believe that many poeple will find fault in them, complain and nothing will ever be changed. Radical plans will never get passed bacause of opposition.

My suggestion is an incentive program.

Utah gives more conservation tags than any other state. Although i am not against these tags i believe that the amount of conservation tags are getting out of hand when you look at the numbers compared to other states.

My idea is that we take a handful of conservation tags and put them into a pool. Make every general season deer hunter turn in their tag after the hunt. Every unsuccessful deer tag is a lottery ticket to draw a premium tag.

I believe that this will benefit in many ways. For one we will have accurate kill statistics instead of random surveys that may or may not be accurate. I also believe that many people would take advantage of the program and decide not to harvest a deer.

Most people are cheap by nature. We want to get what we pay for. In utah residents pay 35 bucks for a deer tag. No one likes the taste of tag soup and when it comes down to the last day of the rifle hunt and john doe has a two point standing broadside at 100 yards he wants to get what he paid for. It comes down to throwing that tag in the trash or shooting a smaller buck. Would you pass on shooting a young buck if you knew you had a chance to get a san juan elk tag or henry's deer tag?

Even if the program only saved a few hundred deer that would have normally been shot that is still a step in the right direction and with the deer herds the way they are right now i think we should take every extra buck we can get.

I know guys that have put in for a special tag their whole life and still haven't drawn, these guys would do anything for another shot at the tag. If you look at how many people apply for sportsmans tags and expo tags is obvious that people are willing to spend a little cash (and maybe pass a two point) to have an extra opportunity to draw the tag they have always dreamed of.

As far as i can see its win win win. The fish and game doesn't loose any money because they aren't cutting tags. The meat hunter still gets to shoot a buck every year if he chooses. We all get to keep hunting and a lucky few will recieve the tag they have always wanted. I understand that it wont make a drastic change in the herd but it is a start. Believe me if i could hunt every five years for a good buck i would love it but i just don't think that will ever fly in this state and this could be a happy medium.

Even though the drawing odds would be terrible it is still a chance and who knows, maybe the lucky winner would be you.

I would like to know what everyone thinks. Good and bad.
Thanks
Ryan

Interesting food for thought!

The problem i see with every unsuccessful hunter tossing in unused permits is that someone's or some group is going to have to take care of all of that, and it will "COST" a lot of money, not too mention the loss of a FREE top dollar tag the state could sell.

I wouldn't even dare guess how many thousands of tags "paperwork" there would be in something like that, although i DO like the idea as an incentive.

Way to go Ryan, putting on your thinking cap and tossing out good ideas!

LAST EDITED ON Aug-27-08 AT 05:32PM (MST)[p]I have thought about the difficulty in counting and tracking all the unused permits. I'm not sure how it works but i was thinking they could set up something similar to the way our draw system works. They have eveything in place to track applications and bonus points i would imagine they could track unused permits as well.

i like it alot! shouldnt take too much money to enter hunter ID #'s into a computer and do a random draw.the numbers are alredy there. the odds to draw these incentive permits shouldn't be too low. if they are too low we might not get the response we are hoping for. but there will be some response no matter what the odds are. great idea pass it on to the DWR and lets see what happens

There does not need to be an overhaul on the deer hunting in Utah... there's alot of nice bucks taken by the guys that want to work for it... and for those who draw the le tags that are now in the system... every hunter does not hunt for trophy bucks however if you ask them they will tell you yes I want to kill bigger bucks...but I dont think the average mule deer hunter in Utah is willing to sacrafice uears of hunting just so they can maybe get a bigger buck.. Yes maybe we need to look at micro managing so the pressure is evend out a but. JMHO

I think this would be a great idea. Whether on it's own or in combination with some of the other ideas. No opportunity is taken alway. If you see deer to shot you are happy with then do it, for a lot of hunters that will be a yearling and that is fine. Just reward those that chose to be selective.
What about not only giving the tags, but also adding bonus points for consecitive tags turned in. If you turn in a tag two or three years in a row you would gain a bonus point for the species of
your choice.
As far as the deer hunt needing a major overhaul , something needs to change. I hunt hard and am generally sucessful I do see nice deer every year. However it can and should be much better for all hunters in the state with some changes.
Sorry that was a little long winded for me, but I liked the idea!

Elk_Horn.

I'm not saying there are no good bucks left in utah. I myself have seen some great bucks this year. But we all know its not what it could be. Utah has some awesome habitat that used to put out multiple trophy bucks every year. Now they are getting fewer and farther between.

I am very lucky with my job and school that allows me to scout 3-5 days every week and being an avid shed hunter i spend every waking moment on the winter range glassing for next years shed crop. There is definately room for more adult bucks in this state.

Why be content with what we have when we can make it better.

My observation is that guides and trophey hunters are the main people who fit into the "most of us agree something needs to be done" category. This website is heavier on those types than the general public hunters; nevertheless, I see no downside to your proposal.

I have an additional, somewhat realated thought. Cow tags have kept me off the yearling bucks the past five years. It's a lot easier to lay off the small bucks if I have meat in the freezer or a later tag in my pocket. I know some guys who will buy several big game tags per year. Maybe a total cap of 2 big game tags per hunter per year could share the wealth a little more for the anterless tags.

I don't think that it is just guides and outfitters that think something needs to be done about utahs deer. If you look at the population numbers we are close to an all time low. Not only is the population in bad shape but if you look at the post hunt buck to doe ratio on some units it is scary. Just with that inforamtion alone its obvious that we would handle having a few more bucks roaming the hills.
