I have hunted mule deer for years and have done differant methods of hunting them. How do you hunt them? Stalking, walking creek bottem, pattering them and waiting for them to come to you.

spot and stalk! i try to get to a vantage point early. i start with the clearings and work my binos/spotter into the trees as it gets later in the morning.usually if im in good spot i can evaluate several bucks. pick the best one watch where he beds.after that put together a plan to stalk in on him.

But you do have to know area and know where they could be and should be.

Spot and stalk is certainly my favorite. However, if you know the place and the local deer very well, a "very careful" one-man drive can be effective.......get close and push him out into the open. Tracking can work...IF you are careful. SPOT AND STALK is the most fun (my view).

Within the shadows, go quietly.

I have had good luck patterning mule deer but the only thing they don;t always use the same trail or may come in different but has done me well. This one buck I was after would come to an area every 3 day or so but he would come in 3 different places. Well after many nights not being in the wrong spot he finally come to the spot I was set up at and I got the kill. I also had good luck stalking also.

A little bit of everything for me, but works best is still hunting (walk a little real slow, look a lot with smaller binos). An I area I usually hunt does not have high vantage points to really spot and stalk all that well.

I have had the most success with what I call Sneak and Peek in the timber. Still hunting, watching small openings, but moving often. I use the binos for very up close and personal glassin'. Is that a tree or is that a leg?
I also love spot and stalk high country hunting, but in this country, the time is very limited. We can get snowed out rather early in the season.

For me it depends on the area, the number of hunters in the area and the number of good bucks. I use the old spot and stalk the most but I also love to get out there and beat the bush.
Good Luck and Great Memories

I too, like BCBOY use a term and method i call sneak and peek. It's especially effective high up on steep ridges looking down into north facing draws. Instead of walking the ridge itself, loop down the backside and then come up and peek over into a vantage, timber, rocks, draw, or whathaveyou. You can work a whole ridge this way, always looking ahead to where you want to loop up and peek over into the next spot.

This method has been very effective for me on big bedded bucks in the middle of the day. Every time you pop over, you just might get a peek at, bedded behind a small clutter of brush facing downhill and totally unaware, the monster muley buck of a lifetime!
