Good taxidermy vs bad taxidermy...

Who can tell me technical traits found in good taxidermy compared to bad taxidermy??? I would like to hear from non-taxidermists as well as taxidermists. Just wondering how well informed the public hunting world is. Also, what part does the hunter play in good taxidermy (besides killing animals)???

things in a good one.
honesty.
professional additude
knowledgeable
reference pics,
and real references
prices within the range of the other taximen in the area.

bad

the opposite of good

the hunter plays a HUGE part in the outcome of the mount.
1. SAVE THAT CAPE!!!!
the best taximan in the world cannot keep you cape from slipping if the hunter screwed it up:
bad cape job (hack job)
dragging the hair off it
dragging it against the hair
heat...not cooling it.
cutting to short, if there is not enough cape you can't mount
HOLES....don't cut holes in it, they have to be sewed up
time, waiting to long to get it to the taximan
DUST. DO NOT TIE IT TO YOUR ROOF DUST AND DIRT IS NOT GOOD!

2. talk to him before the hunt, see what he wants you to do, he can teach you.

3. talk price BEFORE THE HUNT, this includes the DEPOSIT!!!! what you need to leave when you dump off that head at 2 AM.

ask for pics of other mounts, and references.
and ask for a time frame, do not expect to see it in a month. but over 2 years is TO LONG, about a year is expected.

If you do all this you will end up with no surprises and a good mount.

hope this helps.

Another question to add for input-do the taxis consider it a copout if the hunter brings them-FRESH as possible-the animal to let him cape it to save those "rookie" mistakes?
I know its not always possible to do so, like you high country hunters with the billygoat genetics, but curious what a taxi has to say.

i have never heard a taxidermist complain about that,

they would rather cape it themselves than sew up holes.

"prices within the range of the other taximen in the area"

I do not agree with this statement. If your looking for good taxi work, sometimes you need to pay more than "the going rate". As a general rule, you get what you pay for.

I'm not suggesting the highest guy is the best. You have to do some homework. But, an affordable price has nothing to do with a good taxidermist.

Things to look for in a mount:

Shrinking - has the hide shrunk away from the antler burs, are the lips painted to look like he has a smile (they have shrunk away from their orignal placement), are the eyelids laying nicely against the eye?

Drumming - same as shrinking, but you'll notice it in the ears and the armpit area.

Painting - does it look painted? I don't mean it shouldn't have paint on it. It should color applied by painting, but blended so as to not look painted.

Eye set is normally the first thing you can pick up on if it is out of whack.

The ears - are the edges nice and crisp or curled over

Nose - is the nosepad slick or textured?

Nostril/Septum details - Is it closed shut or can you see the details?

Clean - Is the mount clean or does it look greasy?

Hair patterns - Are they in the proper locations?

Stitching - Can you see the stitching?

You need to have some knowledge of deer anatomy to pick up on some of these items, but most of them stand out if not correct. Don't assume what your used to seeing on the wall is correct. Try to be more observant of live deer and photos. Just because a taxi has been in business for x number of years does not mean they know what their doing. It may just mean he or she has been mounting them incorrectly for x number of years.

hobbes,
i agree.

all i meant by price comparisons, was if they are much lower they are usually new, be wary of discounts, and going to the highest guy in town is just not necessary.

3 or 4 phone calls will give you the average price. go from there.

Get a contract in writing stating time/price... Taxidermits have a tendency to talk out thier azz when it comes to time refrences. Make them put their money where their mouth is. If they won't do it, look for one that will.

Are you looking for the best price, or the best mount?

A good taxidermist . hum. If the price gets you there. Then look at the mounts. Are they alive or are they dead. Does he or she stand behide there work for life. do they give good care instructions. Do they have a good postive atitude. You can do great work but if your an a-- they probley wont be back. we must listen to hunting storey with excitment. the main thing is stand true to your word . the other guy early nailed the rest. Bad taxidermist. deer look like dogs elk like cows mounts on the wall wiht big bald skin spots or just a couple mounts and only photos. no waranty. no referances. charge you for anything extra other than the flat rate . talk you into what they would do . now good hunter care . takes care of skin as if he was going to eat it also . cool, clean, dry, or best frozen . one who calls taxidermist soon. a.s.a.p . one who takes good care has the best mount in the long run. bad hunter care . shot it , pulled it a mile threw in back of the truck all day to show off then decides to skin it. let it sit out next to the camp for remander of hunt. week or to old now lets get- her done. well we know what happen next. s--t. good taxidermist need good hunters. good luck to all this season .
