Here is my 2008 Arizona buck. dubbed "Whitey" Unfortunately, I was not able to recover him in a timely manner. As you can see the critters beat me to him. However I am grateful and very lucky to have found him after a marginal hit and several days of searching. I was also fortunate to get a couple live photo's of him while scouting. Enjoy the pics.

Way to go Jer......that's a sweet looking buck. I knew you'd end up with a good one form there. Congratulations again.

Congrats! Strange way to make 4 points with both rear points coming off the main beam. Cool looking buck.

Congrats on a great buck!!!! I'm very impressed with your ethics of not giving up and recovering your animal. Way to go!!

Bet that made you sick searching for him knowing how big he is and that you may not find him.. Good job for staying with him. How far did he go??

Great unique buck! How far was he from where you originaly shot him?

NICE BUCK! great frame this guy has!...and glad you recovered the trophy.

Because on the non-typical horn configuration, I'd be interested in a rough scoring of this buck. Mainly would be interested in how he scores as a Muley and then how he would score as if it were a whitetail?

LAST EDITED ON Sep-06-08 AT 01:15PM (MST)[p]Very nice indeed! Your pictures are AWESOME! Just curious how do you score a mule deer buck with a frame like that?

great looking buck I really like that look makes him look wider and bigger kind of cool. I like see that people don't give up on finding there deer. congrats jdh. on_target

Great buck, tough break on the weak hit, but i'm glad you stuck with it!! Congrats on haveing ethic's..........like asked earlier, how far did he make it??
Mike

very interesting and unique muley. Good job in sticking with it and finding him. It looks like his velvet is still in good shape. I would be interested to know as well how you found him and how far he had travelled.

Jdh,
Congrats on yet another whopper buck! That buck has some serious character. Way to stick with it and keep looking for him. I, too, have been there and done that. The sleepless nights laying awake wondering why, how, and where are enough to drive ya insane. For me it was 3 1/2 weeks later before I was able to finally find the buck I wounded and put him down for good. It was quite the relief to finally find him.

That is a dandy. I am glad that you found him, that would have sucked if you would have lost a monster like that.

That thing has a big ole whitetail rack on him. Look at the bright side, at least you didn't have to gut him.

I agree, he'd score just like a big three pointer w/extras. Question, cause i've head it both ways. On a instance like this, do you get a credit for the mass of the g-2's? Halfway up?

Yes, ALL antlered animals will receive four circumference measurements. With G3 missing, it will be taken at the half-way point on G2.

Thanks BOHNTR for clearing that up for me!

Truely another stud buck that anyone would love to have! Man, really getting in some dandy's this year!!

Joey

Thanks guys for all the kind words. Yea there were some sleepless nights wondering what the heck happened. As far as a score I rough scored him at 192" whitetail style. I guess I knew that way he would get all four mass measurements. Don't know if that is the right way or not for an official measurement for mule deer. He is exactly 31" wide.

I shot the buck mid-morning, he was quartering away down hill 65yds. Right at the shot he jumped the string and turned right into my arrow. I initially thought I had missed because it didn't sound like a hit. I thought I had hit the rocky hillside behind him. I can only assume he took the arrow high in the left shoulder and then glanced up under his spine above the vitals. Again only an assumption. Upon finding a little blood & no arrow, we gave him an hour or more and slowly went on to tracking. He was only bleeding on his left side, therefore no exit hole. Anyways the tracking was very, very slow mostly following tracks and very little blood. We spent over 5 hours and covered around a 1.5 miles or so and the buck never laid down once. He also was very smart, fish hooking and checking his back trail the whole time. We ran out of blood and tracks. I honestly didn't have much hope after those 5 hours. The only hope was that he could still be packing the arrow. Anyways to make a long story short I ended up down the ridge about 1/2 mile from where we lost him just meandering around just giving myself a chance I guess. Oh ya I forgot to mention it poured the morning after the hit and washed all sign of any blood away. I don't even realize how lucky I am to find this deer. Sorry, back to the story I was just out on the end of a ridge and had actually turned back and was heading back to the truck. I sat down to take a break and was overlooking a pretty good canyon and the other side was somewhat open and I happened to see a hawk fly over the ridge. So I put up my bino's and about 400 yds across and down the canyon I instantly spotted a ray of sunshine illuminating a rib cage in the shadows. I couldn't believe it. For sure an act of the buck gods. Had I been there 1/2 earlier or later the sun would not have been able to illuminate it. Lesson learned, "Give yourself a chance". just plain lucky!

Awesome buck J! God that thing is nice. I chased around a 23-24" 4x4 this morning for a few hours down in 21. Even that was a shooter, but your buck is in another category...congrats, glad you found him.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-07-08 AT 00:28AM (MST)[p]Is it just me or is was that buck destined for you? It has your smile and everything (kinda freaky that it really is smiling in that last pic)!

CONGRATS on perseverance and having enough ethics to finish the job you started and to tell the truth about what happened. Alot of people would sugar coat it.

GREAT TROPHY!!!

~Erick

I bet your heart skipped a beat when you spotted that ribcage throught the binos. Good job again of sticking with it and recovering him. He will look good up on the wall.

Saskman

Awesome buck Jeremy. I didn't ready your post, and I thought many I've got to learn to clean a buck like that! :) Congrats!

jdh, great buck, but I'm glad you were able to recover him or atleast what was left.I know that sick feeling and don't wish it to any other bowhunter, just glad you did finally find him. He has all the head gear you'd ever want in a trophy, next bow season you can relax a bit and hunt for them back starps...thanks for sharing it....hope you can find a nice early cape to get him mounted....if not give me buzz , my taxidermists have some real nice capes....NM

4000- I never read where he said he was proud to make a marginal shot and lose all the meat??? He said "I am grateful and very lucky to have found him after a marginal hit and several days of searching." How about not putting words into peoples mouth and then you won't be the odd man out.

RockyMtnOyster

Guess I am the odd man out on this one.
I would not be proud of a shoot and release situation. You made a marginal hit on a deer, taking a shot that was arguably out of range. The animal was lost, and totally wasted.

4000FPS- is that the speed at which words fly out of your mouth unchecked? JDH was probably sick about how the shot turned out as would all sportsmen. Why not a congrats on sticking with the animal for multiple DAYS and leave the hunter bashing for the experts at PETA.

That is one beautiful buck in the velvet you harvested with your bow. What was the daytime temperature highs while you were hunting and how many hours did it take to find the buck from when the arrow was released until the buck was found??

LAST EDITED ON Sep-07-08 AT 08:01PM (MST)[p]Congrats and way to stick with it and find him Jeremy!!

Can't say for B&C but for SCI Mule Deer get 4 mass measurments period. Even if you shoot a spike you divide the length of the spike in half, mark the spot and take a mass measurement. You then times the measurment by 4, this results in your mass measurement.

Example you shoot a spike that is 10 inches long you measurer a mass measurment at the 5 inch mark that is 1 inch around. That antlers mass measurement would be 4 inches not 1 inch.

That's a monster no matter what - very cool lookin'. Congrats on finding him - I bet it was easy packin' him out.

Keep the Sun at Your Back and the Wind in Your Face

Awesome buck.

He gets scored like a big 3 pt, with a missing G3. The inlines between the G4 and main beam (front fork) would be scored as extra points. Like has been stated, there are always 4 mass measurements per side. The H3 mass measurement would be made at the halfway mark on the G2.

That is one buck where score should mean a thing. He's a monster any way you look at it!

JDH,
Congratulations on not only shooting a sweet buck, and finding him after a bad shot. I know the sinking feeling when it starts to rain/snow after the shot.

P.S. Thanks for the Unit 10 info. Everything you told me is spot on. There are some really awesome hunters on this website and you are one of them. I am leaving for Unit 10 on Thursday for the duration of the elk hunt. There are some giant bulls in one area you told me about. Thanks again.

Awesome job of finding him, looks like the velvet can be saved. Good job on taking a pig.

Beautiful looking buck !!!, Sorry you couldnt recover him til it was too late, happens to the best of them. Nice job

LAST EDITED ON Sep-13-08 AT 10:24PM (MST)[p]Jer, I am holding out on posting my pics for now. I will eventually though. I can't believe that he scored what he did. My pics are not the greatest so I hate showing them. They do the deer no justice. Have you gone over to see him???

Yep, seen him that night at travis's while he was caping him out. Needless to say he is a freakin toad. Congrates again. Just go get his antlers and take some better pics.
