BOHNTR

Colorado was a bit tougher this year. The herd I have been hunting seems to have suffered from the winter kill. In fact I believe it was FAR worse than what has been reported.

After backpacking several hours into a remote drainage that usually holds A LOT of nice bucks, I found 3 that I was willing to arrow (over 170"). One of them Fred went after and moved out of the basin.......the other two were literally living on cliffs that were impossible to get onto with a bow and arrow.

In the same drainage where up to 40 bucks is not uncommon, there were maybe 5-7. Every doe was alone and I never saw a fawn. VERY scary!

I did see quite a few nice elk......including a 340" net bull at less than 50 yards. No tag though......besides, I wouldn't pack one of those critters out on my back that far for anything. I'm getting too darn old for that! :)

I could have arrowed a 160" class buck, but I was looking for something a bit better than that.........especially since I already arrowed a good one the week before in Arizona. Sure hope they rebound in a few years, as it's great mule deer range.

On a positive note, I saw some beautiful country with unbelievable wildflowers, lots of elk and mountain goats, plenty of marmots, and tranquility that one can only experience in the back country. I had a great time!

Just curious and I understand if you dont want to tell, but do you mind saying which unit you hunted?

Bummer on the CO deer Roy, but sounds like you still had an experience and AZ memories can't be too bad. ;-)

Any pics of the high country would be cool. Hopefully you didn't kick your camera down the mountain again this year. ahahahh

Thanks for the update Roy. I was wondering the same thing about how your CO hunt turned out. Sounds like a really pretty place to be. Bummer about fewer deer.

WOW Roy too bad on the deer status. You've kill big bucks in there for a few years running now. It took mother nature with a sledge hammer to slow you down. Good to get a real field report on how bad the winter really was. Kill or not, bet you had one heck of a hunt in there anyway.
