LAST EDITED ON Oct-04-08 AT 07:22PM (MST)[p]Hey all of you guy's out there I have a story that I would like to share with all of you and see maybe if I can get any help.
In October 1966 My dad Craig took a mule deer of the back side of Timp In utah, He was 20yrs. old at the time. His deer was a 11x7 and 39 3/4 wide and 36 inches tall, and scored out at 272. That year He missed winning the jeep from Ziniks sporting goods, by only 2 points, he would have won lots of pots of money and guns that year. after going to all the competitions He went to his work. He worked at Mountain States Steelin lindon Utah. He went inside to have all of his buddies come out and look at his deer, when they came back out the deer was gone body and all he was only inside 5 min. They closed the gates and looked in everyones trucks and cars and found nothing, and at the time Ziniks and sunset sports had pictures of his deer but no longer do. My wish is to be able to find out something about his deer or even find it. He thinks someone followed him to work and stole it from him while he was inside.
My dad knows eveything that took place that morning from killing the deer from about to win money and guns from the deer being stolen. To this day when he talks about it he tears up. So if any one out there knows anything or if you have seen a deer mounted that looks like that please don't hesitate writing back. You could make my dads dream come true. He still talks about this deer all the time. Thank you for taking time and reading his story. Thanks Jennifer

LAST EDITED ON Oct-04-08 AT 07:21PM (MST)[p]Jennifer. Your dad worked at "Mountain States Still." ???? Might be part of the problem.

After 42 years it's doubtful anyone can help your dad out. But you never know.

Welcome as well. Hang on tight. Keep your hands and feet in the car at all times.

Bobcat...
haha..I was getting ready to write exactly what you said in your first two lines..then I read yours...damn it..I was all excited and you stole my thunder! Darner's collection would definitely be where I would start..:) and.. as for 36 inches tall..how do people come up with those kind of measurements?
Does sound like a hell of a buck though..Not too many running around like that..Good luck with your search Jennifer! Too bad you don't have any pictures.

My dad would know that deer any where, and he was 36 inches tall
my dad would never forget him, that is the one thing that sticks in his brain the most is how tall he was. We don't have any pictures only Ziniks sporting goods and sunset sports at the time did. He didn't have him long enough to get any pictures sorry. How do I see Darner's collection?

THATS JUST A FEW OF THE BUCKS DARNER HARVESTED!!!

OR DID HE???

I'M NOT DOUBTING THE 36" TALL!!!

WAS THAT A BOX MEASUREMENT???

OR A WRAP MEASUREMENT FROM THE BASES UP TO THE TOP???

THIS IS MY NEW GUN,YOU MAY NOT LIKE IT,YOU'LL LIKE IT A HELL OF A LOT LESS WHEN IT HITS ITS DESTINATION!!!

Sorry that I do not know anything about the deer you are looking for. Sorry also that a couple of the guys here can't leave well enough alone.

Trying to get some help from some of these dorks is just asking too much ya know ?

Just a thought, but you may want to have your dad draw up as sketch of what the antlers look like since you don't have a picture. A few years back, a big buck was poached here in NM and they were able to find the poacher because of a hand drawn sketch of the rack.

Sounds like one heck of a buck. I can certainly understand and do hope you get the big boy back!!

The only difficult to believe part of your description is that a huge buck that big wasn't the clear winner, by a wide margin(NPI), in all those big buck contests.

Good luck in your search!! Joey

Don't let a few talk for the many. most on here are pretty good hunters and people, some have there big bragger heads up there a$$ and its always the same ones. maybe some day you will catch a break, both here and in your search.

Thanks steelheader it is good to know there are still a few good guys out there. Just because I am a woman they think I don't know what I am talking about. The thing is I do. I hunt all over the world. I was just trying to see if anyone in this forum had ever heard of this deer. Thanks Jen

LAST EDITED ON Oct-06-08 AT 08:25PM (MST)[p]Manny15,
when they used to give the jeep away at Zinkis Sports my dad said they had someone there measuring the deer. That was both box measurement and wrap measurement

Thanks Jen

I like the sketch idea and post it on here and a few local places maybe ? Chances are good it is or was with someone local in that area.

If a 39 1/2 wide 36 inch tall 272 deer was the 2nd place deer I would love to see the one that got the jeep!!!

Where is your dad from. I have alot of family around those parts and can ask around.

Tag - tell me that thing's back is less than 30 inches!

I wasn't there when this sketch was made, thus i have no idea if its too scale. What I AM sure of is that any deers body would look exactly that way sitting under a rack like that!

So i believe it to be an accuate sketch.

I've compared the sketched rack to the rack in the basement and it is accurate...points and mass all the way to the tippy tops of 36 inches!

LOOK AT THAT LIL PISSCUTTER BODY!!!

ALL I KNOW FOR SURE IS:::

IF ANY OF TODAYS JOKERS SEEN A BUCK OF THEM DIMENSIONS THEY'D SWEAR THEY SEEN A 50"ER!!!

***NOTE***!!!

I NEVER WAS BEING SMART ABOVE!!!

I DO BELIEVE A 36" TALL BUCK WOULD STICK IN ANYBODY'S MIND,I DON'T THINK I'VE EVER SEEN A BUCK THAT TALL???

NOT SAYING GOD NEVER CREATED ONE!!!

STILL WONDERING IF THAT WAS A WRAP MEASUREMENT OF THE HORNS???

OR A BOX MEASUREMENT UP OFF THE SCULL???

I have seen and handled the antlers of a deer that was killed in about 1966. We measured it at 42" wide but only 16" tall. It came off the back side of Nebo. It was 5x6 with short points but major mass-- but it never won the Ziniks prize.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-07-08 AT 08:41PM (MST)[p]Hi Jennifer. I for one truly hope you find your dad's deer horns. This will probably be my last post here on Monster Muleys, and I'm sure that will make some of these guys very happy. But what I'm wondering is who died and made some of you guys Gods gift to hunters? All the girl wants to do is find the horns for her father. Plain and simple. Maybe the dimensions were right, maybe they were wrong. Who cares. All I know is that she is trying to do something for her father to make him happy. I'm thinking maybe some of you weren't fortunate to be close to your fathers or even have one (that you knew of). This sounds like a father and daughter that are very close, as I am with my dad. If my dad had shot a deer no matter what the size, and someone had stolen it, heck ya, I would be for trying to find it for him. Some of you guys out there, and I won't mention any names need to come back down off your high horses and remember what it's all about. Family, friends and the outdoors. I wouldn't trade my 40+ years of hunting with family and friends for anything. Jennifer didn't ask for all of the negative comments and how some of you know what a buck should look like even though you never saw it, she just asked for help from other hunters like herself. Sorry, I know that's not what some of you want to hear, and like I said, Goodbye to Monster Muleys, it was a fun ride. (I'm not baseing this just on this post alone. I've read many many others, and all some of you want to do is just fight to see who thinks they are the best). I know, sianorra to me, and I'm sure there will be plenty of those negative comments toward me. But that's o.k. I'll still hunt with family and friends, and wether they shoot big ones or little ones, or none at all, at least we'll be there having fun and enjoying what God created. Signing off.... Mark.

Personally I would try to do the sketch. Nothing lost in trying to do it and putting it out into this system we have for getting information out.

Do, see what happens. Doesn't matter what anyone says about it.

Stranger things have happened in the past with bigger shots in the dark than this one.

Also, I would think it would be possible to get the contest's winner from that year as a comparision. I am talking about the data from the winner from that year of the years near 1966.

I have to agree with Markhunts.

Now on to a suggestion. If you are really serious about finding out. First go to the newspaper archives around that period of time. These heads were usually shown in the Tribune.

Then post the picture, along with the plea.

I have found that these type of people usually take credit for shooting the animal and have told many. Someone will recognize the head.

The other problem you have is that Duce and other sporting goods stores let them lay around for anyone to take when they were going out of business.

I know a person who won the vehicle with his head and if he wouldn't have received a telephone, call got down there immediately, his head would have gone the way your fathers did.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-08-08 AT 01:23AM (MST)[p]Tageater,
It has not taken 40 years to to finally look for this deer. We have been looking for this deer for many years or even pictures
I have looked in the news paper archives and I have talked to Randy Park his parents used to own Ziniks sporting goods and now they own Parks Sportman in Orem. He never new what happened to all the deer photos that they had over the years.Ziniks is the one that took all the photos of his deer. The deer that won the jeep that year was 43 inches wide and was found not to long ago in someones basement. The guy that has the 43 incher is trying to see if he has the newspaper archive still, it says my dad game in second place that year. We are hoping there is a photo on it of my dads deer. I don't know why you are being so rude to me when you don't even know me or anything about me. I can't believe there are people like you that just go in to forums and try to start fights. Why? And my dads not dying with out his deer it is me that is trying to find it. I wanted to surprise him even with a photo of it. My dad is my best friend I would hope that if my deer was stolen he would do the same for me. And yes I have killed a deer. Sorry that for some reason you don't believe what I have wrote down on this forum but I'm in high hopes that I will find A photo real soon of his deer and then maybe you will believe me, I really would not write a story about my dads deer if it was not the truth here on monster muleys. Sorry for bothering your forum Jennifer

Sorry to hear your leaving Mark. Ive thought about doing the same lately. There is some people on this site that are just here to have their egos stroked and cut others down and it really gets old. On the other hand there is some really good people here with some great info so I guess like anything else you have to take the good with the bad.

Do not now the guys name but there is a dentist in Midvale that has some heads that came out of the store that was in Fashion Place Mall in Murray. My brother in-law won the big buck contest in the early 70s. He had to give them the head to receive a new 4x4 The dentist has those horns on the wall on some others. some-one on here should know his name. Karl

You need to look up H&H collections in Palm Springs, California. The road to lost giant mule deer usually leads right to their collection.

First off, good luck on your continuing quest Jennifer - I hope you are able to find some thing out about your dad's lost trophy. It sounds like you are a fine daughter and it is always refreshing to hear of strong family ties.

Second, I have been kicking around here for some time now, and rarely post. That's my choice - but I feel compelled to comment on the negative crap...grow up boys! I have left numerous other hunting websites that are nothing more than negative seething places that totally miss the point of what a gathering place should be! Negativity, exclusion, elitism, you name the behavior - I have seen it all and no good comes from any of it. I have a young son that I want to include in some hunting websites, but I am often reluctant to do so with creeps like some of y'all running around. I have read threads (on other sites) where folks get ripped for everything from ignorance to what gear they choose to use...I mean come on folks!

Monster Muleys is generally a decent site, lets all work together to keep it a place that we can be proud of and feel safe partaking in. If you just want to bash - go elsewhere or as my mother used to say: "If you can't say anything worth while - then don't say anything at all!"

Just tell tagboy to STFU. Hope you find the rack or atleast a pic.

Wow, some of you guys need to lighten up. Too much estrogen and it is not from any of the posts from the ladies.

Jen good luck in your search for your dad's deer I know my daughter would do the same thing just to see a smile on my face !!!!! and sorry that there are a few around here that have to mess with people all the time, if you do find the deer or a picture I would not give these little people the satisfaction of seeing a great animal, and know in your own heart that you have done a great thing for your father. Take care and good luck

Jennifer,

I too hope you find your father's buck. But the big question in my mind is how he will be able to identify it for sure after 40 years, and even if he could, how could he prove it is his.

Mark

LAST EDITED ON Oct-09-08 AT 03:37PM (MST)[p]FamilyMan,

Never truer words spoken than what you just posted. Even if for some PURE stroke of luck one "something like you described" Buck should show up in someone's collect, what grounds can you justify that it belongs to your family without any evidence and NO PICs.

I wish you could find the Buck, but this seems like to me your beating a dead horse, sorry I sound so negative but that is my gut feeling on this whole thread.

There are a lot of missing and/or stolen Bucks & Bulls over the years and hardly any of them have been found. WITHOUT PICTURES AND DOCUMENTATION, this is not going to help you in the quest for the buck.

If you do find the Buck, then you proved me wrong and the others here as well, good luck.

Brian

Jennifer-

You need to look up a book called "UTAH'S BIGGEST BUCKS"

The version I'm talking about is hard-bound and looks like wood grain on the front and back covers. I figure it was compiled in the mid to late seventies. We grew up with that book on the shelf and it had pictures of nearly every winner, second, and third place Zinik's and Wolfe's annual contests.

I'm not sure if Rusty Hall included all of those old pics in the newest edition but you could also try contacting him. He produced Trophy Hunter magazine and would know as well as anyone where to look.

Timp is one magic mountain and any deer off that hog was well deserved and it's a tragedy that he lost it in such a petty way. I can't imagine what I would do. It's bad enough to miss a monster or even wound one. But to harvest a buck of that calibre and have it swiped...what a shame.

Good luck.

Wow, Amazon has 6 copies of the original Robert Warren book and 5 copies of Rusty Hall's version. Might be a good investment to get that picture for your dad.

Ask Darner how you prove a buck is not legit.

It can be done.

First step is finding a picture to varify the buck from her father.

Then it can be done.

Just an idea on how you can get proof. Sounds like a fairly unique buck. So, getting the picture might open the door to matching it to a deer mount found in the future.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-13-08 AT 11:08AM (MST)[p]Jennifer, I am so sorry to hear about your Dad's deer. I hope you are successful at finding it. Here's a story that happened to a friend of mine, which was similar to your Dad's story in a broad sort of way.

My friend's Dad killed a dandy buck back in the 50's. It was almost 50 inches wide as I recall. His Dad just put it down his basement, as he was an old government trapper, and never considered mounting it. So all he had were the antlers.

Some years passed and so did my friends Dad. At that time, his mother gave the antlers to her son, my friend, who in time showed them to a guy who said he wanted to mount the buck and put it in place of business and after several years, would give back the mounted deer to my friend. It sounded like a great deal to my friend, and so he did it. But several years later, about the time it was to be returned to him on the previous agreement, someone broke into the guys business and stole the head and antlers. At least that is what he was told and believed-----------------UNTIL

Many years went by and one day my friend stopped in a sporting good store in southern Utah and there on the wall was his Dad's antlers on the mounted head he had seen a number of times, as he was friends with the guy he let do the mount.

My friend inquired about the head and finally ended up talking to the store?s owner. He found out that the owner of sporting good store, had purchased the head from guess who? ------Yep, the guy who had mounted the antlers and promised to return to my buddy.

At the time that happened, I was good friends of both individuals and purchased many items from the guy who did the mount. After I found out what happened, I never spent another dime in his business, and my respect for the guy totally evaporated, as did our friendship. You can imagine how my buddy felt!

Antlers like your Dad's just don't disappear. Keep looking and you might find them, just like my friend found his Dad's.

Best wishes you to Jennifer. BB

Thanks Bess, if you were not so anoyying,
I might have missed this post.

For the folks that have been around here for a while, & those still remaining whom have not already quit MM because you got you cyber feelings hurt durring the making of this thread,
by now you realize how common of a scenario this story really is.

An idea I've been working on as a business venture, is being able to make antler reproductions from any & all the information available, in order to make a replica of thier family airloom that which has been lost.

I know we could come pretty close in most instances.

Jen, if you are still around, you had some good advice above about trying to contact Dana Hollinger or Bob Howard ( H&H collection). but i doubt you will get far without a pic.

Will do.....it would help if I had at least a drawing or something distinguishable to look for, as he has literally hundreds of HUGE bucks mounted....many of them would fit that bill.

BOHNTR )))---------->

Do the H&H collection have a web site or is it a private collection. Is there any way to view it.

its pick will be in utah,s biggest bucks. bessy fore sure. the first addition. the guy that wrote this book took his time and was very detticated to getting every big buck clear back. with stories of how and where the bucks came from. my copy was stolen yrs ago or i would find it. but there are alot of 39ers in this book. its the very first trophy hunter concept. just was a thick hard back with over 300 pages of meggabucks. hope you find your dads buck. dont let some of the 2 points around here bug ya. ken

Hey Jen, thanks for posting this and sorryabout the neg. stuff. Not all of us are that way. I will keep my eyes open for that buck. With your description, if it is around, someone will see it.

Jen, best of luck finding your fathers rack or even a picture for his and your scrap book. This site can be a great place to visit, get information, share information or just read about what most everyone on here loves to do (hunt).

I enjoy coming to the site and posting when I have something to say positive and have the time. However, I have always picked and choose the forums I respond to. There is those on here that are just waiting to try to ruffle someones feather's for their own enjoyment and/or thier ego!!!

Like I said, I have always picked my forums that I respond and post to. This one has really stuck a nerve with several members and myself. This is the first post I have responded to in a debating manner that may be taken as an argumentative responce. I will probably get slammed by a few of the same people that has responed to you, O'well!!!

Best of luck to you and look at the majority of the posts that are positive and helpful. I have personally met several of the members that post on here, due to this site and have had great conversations, hunts and created new friendships.

Like has been said before there are only a few negitive posts. There is always a few that cloud what the rest are trying to do positively. I agree with Markhunts, steelheader, wildbob and the majority of the rest of the people on this site.

Maybe someday a few of the negitive responders will grow up and get a life and remember what this site is honestly here for. I don't know, maybe they are just a few anti hunter's invading this site and trying to destroy it and cause negitive feelings and/or conversations between hunters. To bad it only takes a few to cause such problems.

Please note the ones that are positive and wiling to help and feel free to PM any of them for help and/or information. Best of luck, hunt hard and remember that you are always welcome in my camp!!
