Hey everyone im just curious of when i can have my buck scored. I shot a buck in utah this year on the opening day of the archery hunt on august 16th and im certain he will make the pope and young minumum. I have had the horns in the freezer since august 20th and i believe there is a 60 day drying period before i can have them officially scored? I was just curious if anyone knew if i have to take the horns out of the freezer before having them scored or if i can pull them out of the freezer the day i take it to get measured? Also i cant seem to find the part of the tag that i punched out when i shot it, i have the other half of the tag that says what unit i was hunting and all my other information just wondering if i need the other half to have it scored? Thanks

They must be out of the freezer and dry at normal room temperature for 60 consecutive days before they are eligible to measure.

For P&Y, you won't need a copy of the deer tag.

You can have it scored right after you post pictures on Monster Muleys.

Is it a big deer that your trying to maximize score or are you worried about it just missing the PY minumums?

My son's pronghorn head was in the freezer for about a year, and I called our local B&C measurer to arrange for him to score it. He told me the head had to "DRY" 60 days, and that doesn't count the time it spent in the freezer. Evidently there are a few people out there that are playing scoring tricks with freezers and B&C has found a way to fix the problem.

You may not need the tag to have it scored, but I would be very paranoid about packing an untagged head around. Also, the scorer might be obligated to keep records of all big game parts in his posession in case the fish & game come visiting.

How do they know how long it has been at room temperature? Is there a way to tell or just scouts honor type thing? If its scouts honor might as well not even have that rule because very few people in this world are honest anymore.

Thanks for all your replys guys i guess i will take the buck out of the freezer now. And westernsky its about a 180 buck so im certain i dont have to worry about it shrinking to much to not make the minumum i was just told by my taxidermist to put it in the freezer after he injected the horns just to make sure the velvet stayed on. Hey bohnter i know you are a official scorer right? If so just curious if i could have my buck scored on october 16th if it wasnt in the freezer since i shot it on august 16th but i dont have the tag that is punched out that says it was taken on august 16th? Also like a couple other guys said how can they tell if my buck has been out of the freezer for 60 days or 6 days? Thanks for any replys

Also westernsky i have tried to post pics of my buck on monstermuleys but i cant seem to figure out how to do it. I have pictures on bowsite.com under 175 ish paunsaugunt buck and also on muleymadness.com under paunsaugunt archery buck if you want to look at it there. Or if anyone is willing to post pics of it i will email them to someone and they can post them on monstermuleys.

Dandy for sure!!!

I'll try and answer your questions as best I can. Yes, I'm an OM for both P&Y and B&C. If the buck is still in the velvet (I'm assuming so by the photos and being in the freezer), the 60 days would start once it was preserved (injected) and began drying at room temperature....not in a freezer. Theoretically, if the velvet was stripped on August 16th and left in room temperature it could be measured 60 days from that time.

There are a few things to look for on velvet deer that have been in a freezer the whole time, but those I will keep to myself. :)

Lastly, the affidavit you sign states the animal was taken legally, by means of fair chase, and has properly dried for 60 days. Can people lie? Sure they can, but I like to think most ethical and serious hunters steer more towards doing the right thing than cheating. JMO

Thanks for all your help bohntr you seem to know your stuff. You are right about hoping everyone would be honest, i pulled my deer horns out of the freezer two days ago to begin the official drying period so i guess i can have them measured on about December 10th or so right? I was curious about if i needed the tag to have them scored to make sure whoever i had score them wouldnt think i was a liar about when i shot the buck. So im glad to hear i dont need the tag and that you sign a affidavit saying everything is true. Also thats a great buck you took down on the strip this year, congrats. Thanks for posting up that picture of my buck legacy and good luck this weekend.
