LAST EDITED ON Oct-20-08 AT 07:29AM (MST)[p]The Utah deer season started two days ago. Where are all the 2 point pics? I know thousands of them hit the dirt at first light Saturday morning. Let's see those pics!

COLO3D, your post is sad but very true. I can understand 2pts hitting the ground if it is first time hunters and youth but I am at a lose when it comes to anyone else year after year.

COLO3D,

Yesterday I worked at a Deer Check Station here in Utah to get hours for my dedicated hunter project and I would say that 80% of the deer we checked were 2 points and it wasn't the 1st time hunters that were tagging them.

There's room for all of God's creatures, right next to the mashed taters and gravy.

Shooting 2 pts was fun when I was 14. I don't get these guys that have hunted all their life and still shoot them.

I don't really fully understand the logic either, but for many of those guys opening weekend is the only time they get out to hunt. For them that IS their hunting experience and very valuable to them. I guess just like some of our first deer. For most of us on this site there is more to hunting that drives us into the woods multiple days every fall than just shooting a two point. For me I just love to be in the mountains and if I can see a sunrise from 10,000 ft, I have had a great day on the mountain. It is a bonus to get a great buck. I have two brothers who have this any buck will do mentality, they usually get out twice the entire year, but boy do they love when they get that two point. They are just like I was when I was 16 with my first buck. I wouldn't take that experience from them for anything.

I think that many of you are mis-understanding the point of this post. He just wants to see the average guy with his prize! I get excited over a two point just like I did when I was 14 and shot my first one.

Why do you guys care what other people shoot? No one is making you shoot a little buck. If anything I feel bad for you that hunting for you has lost its "sizzle", and you can not enjoy taking a buck, any buck.

2pointer

2 pointer

That was in essence the point of my post. I just happen to enjoy other aspects of hunting besides "needing" to take a deer.

Some folks actually shoot deer to eat them, not look at their horns.

Some folks can't see a difference between a 2 pt or a 3 pt or a spindly 4 pt. I can't either.

Some folks don't like busting their butts to hunt 10000 ft or someplace where the deer has to be packed out in little pieces on your back.

Killing a 2 pt with my rifle really doesn't do it for me anymore either. (archery/muzz is a different deal) But to each their own. And they certainly eat better than a big old stinky buck.

+ waht idhunter said. To each their own. I've killed alot of two pointers in my day. I've also killed a couple of does.

Held out for a four point this year, but the meat still counts for me. I don't pretend that hunting saves me cash over buying a beef, but I love the hunt, it is a great opportunity to take the kids (any legal animal down is pretty exciting when the kids are along), the meat is better than anything domestic, and self sufficiency is something to be practiced, not just thought about.

As stated in other threads, I've all the respect in the world for trophy hunters. They have skill and discipline that is admirable. I won't begrudge the guy that shoots the first legal animal either though.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-20-08 AT 11:15AM (MST)[p]I watched a guy put 4 shots at a buck I was watching that I could barely see horns on through my spotting scope from over a mile away. Why would you want to pack out that little thing over a mile and a half of nasty terrain. They are good eating, true, but there are 2pts that are less work in many areas. thankfully he missed all four times.

just remember you can't eat those antlers no matter how big they are or how small they are

If someone shoots a legal buck and is happy with it, it's nobody else's f'n business. This snobbish antler worshipping mindset B.S. is ruining hunting. Some people like to eat venison. A couple more years of our current economy and I'm sure you'll understand the importance of this benefit of hunting even more so.

I have no objection to trophy hunting, do it myself. When you look down your nose at others for having a different belief system than you, my friends, it's time for a serious self-evaluation.

Meat and the experience should be the main focal points of any hunt. Not long ago this was the only reason to hunt. Today's hunters are just trying to carry on a previously life sustaining tradition. This tradition no longer has as many consequences or benefits as to the success or failure of the outcome of the hunt.

As with all things, time has altered hunting and it has evolved into different things for different people. For some it's still about sustenance, tradition, experience and family. For some it has become a sport of egos and oneupmanship. I feel these people would be better served on the golfcourse.

My grandfather used to show me pictures of deer harvested back in the 30's-40's, huge deer tied to the old model T, some as large as 40" wide. What did they do with the racks, they tossed them. In a period of history when people struggled to live, they saw no value in an object that gave them no benefit. I think for many people antler obsession has taken the place of the golden calf.

Personally I will never enter an animal in the record books. I don't see how this can feed anyone's ego, it's not like they created the animal.

I will still continue to hunt for magnificent animals, I will continue to harvest lesser animals when I feel the need or desire and I sure as hell won't be making any apologies or excuses to anyone for doing so.

How did you guys all let one person asking to see pics of 2 points turn this into a debate about morals? There's enough of that on plenty of other threads! If I had a pic of a 2 point I'd post it for yall to see and laugh or be proud of it. As said before "to each his own"

Later, Brandon

LAST EDITED ON Oct-20-08 AT 02:05PM (MST)[p]You know I re-read this thread and I don't see where myself or anyone is looking down at anybody that shoots a 2 pt.

All I said is I don't get it. Shooting 2 pts don't do it for me, its not a challenge. I didn't say it was bad, against the law, or unethical. So settle down, we all enjoy the outdoors our own way.

Maybe one could change their name to dead2ptbob and just settle down.

Shoot me a two pointer down on a friends hay field south of Wellington Utah Sat. Evening. I was sure happy with the buck I shoot. He will be tasty as ever.

I started this thread because all we ever hear is how there are no qualtiy bucks left in Utah and all people ever shoot are forkies. So if that's all you have post them up! But keep in mind if the DWR won't manage the herds, you can do your part by passing the younger bucks. If older age class bucks are your desire.

BTW, my hunting partners both shot forkies for their first bucks this year and could not have been more proud. I was there for one of them and it was absolutley awesome! He said that he will hold out for something bigger next year as he ended his hunt too early this year.

To each his own.

I finally closed the deal saturday night with a little 3 by 2.I have hunted my butt off this year right from the opening weekend of the bow hunt.Came across a few good bucks but nothing to special.I hunted high, low and in between but no luck until a couple of days ago.It was great year with many good memories with father,if I could do it all again I wouldn't change a thing.

Deadibob hit the nail on the head.

If you want to shoot a two point or spike, do it and make no excuses. What ever your happy with.

I like to see a big ole buck as much as the next guy but I get sick and tired of people telling others that they shouldn't shoot anything other than a mature buck.

It also pisses me off when you get young hunters that don't want to shoot a little buck because they think they will be made fun of.

Hunting is about family, fun and traditions. if shooting a two point does it for you, go for it.

I agree that hunters should not be looked down upon for shooting smaller legal bucks.

The ones I have a problem with are the ones that have four hunters in a truck, four dead two points in the back and then whine that the F&G is screwed up because all they can find are two points.

Here's your sign.

Anyway... here is my 2 pointer from two years ago.

Here is a nice meat buck from Idaho. He was hurt, so we notched a tag for him.

Well, I took my two brothers out today and after hiking into one of my favorite areas and back out without taking a shot we got on our four wheelers and started heading back to the trucks. I took off first and a short while later I hear a shot. I turned the wheeler around and found my brother with this sweet buck! He is 33 years old and this is his first deer. I must say he was quite excited.

I did tell him that at least he can tell people he really worked for the buck since this morning we covered about 1500 ft vert and around 5 miles. It was a great experience for all of us.

This was spotted a couple years back while on my wifes elk hunt. Bacuse of this guy there are a BUNCH of large forkys out in that area.

Totally! My friend is a guide in the area and told me that this guy lives down in the canyon (National Park) and he only come out durring the rut in January. Only time he is ever spotted previous years before that.

I saw at least 20 two points hanging in trees around our camp this past weekend. We had to finish one off for a guy that shot the hind leg off of one opening morning. How you can miss a 2 point with a rifle is beyond me. Most of them will stand at under 100 yards broadside. I know for a fact there are a lot of people eating two points in Vernal this weekend. To each their own. It's all about having fun and if killing a two point does it for you. More power to you.

How bout the story on the news the other night. Many people are shooting smaller deer this year for the meat. I got a NEWS FLASH for you. If you want cheap meat go to the grocery store. I could have bought a lot of rib eyes for this weeks gas and grocery bill on the hunt.

"Many people are shooting smaller deer this year for the meat"

Thats about the funniest thing I have heard. They must not own calculators.

Sorry, that does not count. Clearly that is a 6 point. Nice try though.

Yeah, unless its in your back pasture, your generally not going to save much money on deer hunting. However, hunting for the meat doesn't always mean "trying to save money." Some people just prefer the taste and quality of game over domestic. My wife couldn't tolerate beef for years. It made her seriously ill. She's since gotten over that--don't have a clue what it was about. At that time wild game was our red meat. We still don't eat much beef, though an occasional fatty steak on the grill is a good deal. There are some areas where people can get to and kill animals with minimal investment of time or money. I suppose I could've held off on elk and shot a cow in a friend's hay field in December or January, with the tag I had, but love to hunt the mountains in the fall. The cost of the hunt is the cost of recreation. Some spend it on toys, rafting, atving, snowmobiling, etc... I spend my play money on hunting and trapping. The meat is a real perk and I make it a point to fill the tag regardless of antlers before season's end. In the case of elk, unless there is a bull standing there withit, I won't hesitate to shoot a cow, or as in the case this year--even a large calf.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-11-08 AT 11:29AM (MST)[p]I know he has brow tines and a crab on the left but he is still a giant forkie to me. Colorado 08 muzzleloader.Taxidermist has him done allready, just waiting for him to dry and do the finishing touches. After climbing the side of a mountain for 5 hours to get above him, it took 1 shot at 120 yds. with my .50 cal. Optima Pro.

No Fork horn here. I graduated to a 3 point this year. I moving up the ladder... how do you post a pic on this thing?

No shame here! Last day/hour buck- and some gooooood meat!! Sweet and delicious... (NV-2007)

Next year will be my year!!

If you want real trophy deer, the absolute worst bucks to shoot are the 160ish 4 points that are a year or two away.... Anyway, whatever floats your boat and is legal is cool by me. Point restrictions usually lead to bucks left to rot and multiple kills per tag. Reduced qutas lead to lower hunter recrutment and the eventual demise of the sport. Like it or not, you need hunter opportunity. I'll still ocasionally take a 2 point on the ast day, and am happy to do so...Fact is, a 2 point on the last day beats a 160 4 point early in my book anyday. At least you do not get cheated out of hunting days!

have to see if I can find athe pic of my deer I shot last year, last day first thing with horn I saw, a 2" tall spike, DELICIOUS

I hope that wasn't in Utah. A ?buck deer? is a deer with antlers that are longer than five inches (R657-5-2(2)(e)).

Don't care for all the negative comments after this post got started, but I thought I would share a picture of a southern Colorado 2-Pointer ~ A great deer in anyone book!

Here is a two point my brother took this year in Utah. He is twenty four inches wide with three inch eye guards. Its in their genes to stay a two point.

One time i was helping a friend of the family in getting a big Ruby Mts. buck. We had already passed on over 50 different bucks when i put my spotting scope on, by far, the biggest forky i'd ever seen. He was trying to keep other bucks away from a hot doe. Some of those other 4x4 bucks were in the 26" inch catagory and considered nice ones for the area.

That forky dwarfed those other bucks both in body and mass x height x width x boxy frame. Yes, he was just a forkey but we tried our buts off to get into position to no avail, it got too dark on us before we could get in range.

I guess what i'm trying to say here is that a good forkey is a good buck. I trophy hunt yet would take a couple shown on this page, like Strikers. in a heartbeat. Yes it usually takes a 4x4 to score well but how many bucks do you take that made book? I love a big framed mature buck regardless of how many points or how well it scores. Big Forkey, heck of a good conversational piece.

Hey! A forum I can relate to! Growing up in a deer hunting family, I had a run of 10 straight years of punching a tag on a two-point!Once, I even thought I was shooting at a 3x2 partially hidden in the trees, and when I got to him, he was a 2x0-hadn't even grown the other side! Talk about ground shrinkage! Twice there were several bucks in a group, and with the excitement of youth and concentrating on the kill and not the antlers, I harvested the wrong buck! For my family and I, these are among our favorite memories to recount! And I love seeing the little guys strutting around during the rut behyaving like the big boys. This year, I recently watched two forkies side-by-side savaging some poor little junipers with their antlers- I would've loved to get that pic! Also, I am attaching a photo of the 2x0 harvested in 1995 "Pete's Half-a-buck". Also, he's not a trophy- this fall whether it be from fighting, injury during growth, or a deformity, I have seen a heavy-racked 4x0, a willow-horned 4x0, a 2x0, and a heavy-racked 3x0 (I got good video of him).

LAST EDITED ON Dec-06-08 AT 01:36PM (MST)[p]Here is a Blacktail I took with my bow in California this past season. I flew out there to visit with family and friends. I only had a couple days to seal the deal on a buck before flying back home. One hour into the hunt, a good stalk and I was tagged out.

Here's a link to one that was posted on here a few years ago....one of the biggest 2-points I've ever seen.
