Did you spot these from the road? I don't ask to insult you, or imply that you are a road-hunter, or anything like that. But I have heard that the prefered way to hunt this particular Colorado unit is to road hunt and I was wondering what your experience was. Very nice bucks.

Mark,
I would not consider myself a road hunter or a hard core backpacker. We have packed deer and elk out on our backs up to 5 miles, but we have also had some much easier hunts where we were able to get a truck or wheeler right to the kill sight. With that said I'm not sure you could walk 1/2 a mile in unit 21 with out crossing a road. I hunted this unit the year before Colorado went to a draw and the number of new roads from gas wells was unbelievable. It reminds me alot of the Bookcliffs on the Utah side of the border. We spent alot of time glassing but almost always you could see a road to get you closer. Both deer we spotted then got closer and after a short stock closed the deal.It was not a hard hunt but a fun one with 10-30 bucks a day to look over with almost no other hunters ever seen.

Hey Camper. Thanks for the reply - I appreciate the insights. Reason I was asking is that my father, how is now in his mid-70s, has made about 10 or so trips out to Colorado to hunt with me over the years, but mostly we have focused on elk. Given his age, he can't hike the hills much anymore, and he has never taken a mule deer, so this unit sounds like fun. He probably wont have time to get enough points to draw, but I have a few stored up and maybe he could come along if I draw.

Thanks again.

Congrats on a couple of great deer! I'm glad unit 21 is still producing. Here's a picture of the deer I took in Unit 21, 3rd rifle 2006. I totally agree with your assessment of the area.

Great bucks. I have 7 Colorado points and put in for 21--3rd season every year. I still have some waiting to do.

FamilyMan,

Thanks! I appreciate it. Your dad would love tagging along with you on this hunt. I wish my 73 yr old dad could have joined me. There are plenty of roads in the unit and you'll see tons of deer. I had to stay in the area for 2 days after I shot my deer, while my camper was being repaired. While waiting, I drove around taking pictures of deer and meeting other hunters (luckily, I didn't see any bigger deer while taking pictures :) Give me a shout if you draw the tag and I'll tell you what I know about the unit.

Mark

I appreciate the offer. Unfortuanately I'm sure it will be a few more years before I can draw unless I move back to Colorado. Which of the rifle sesaons do you recommend for this unit.

Mark

I have a friend there right now.Weather was pretty warm but raining now so hopefully that will help with hunt. I would like to talk to you about the unit but do not know how to send info.
