i have an idaho ml mule deer tag for nov. 10-30. im going to put allot of time in the area, but if you had to pick say 3 days to hunt the rut, what would you choose? pre rut or later in the full rut. what dates do you think are peak rut?

I think it depends on a few factors: Weather, elevation, historical patterns, pressure etc. I personally say the later the better. In AZ the muleys don't rut until Christmas some years. In the Book Cliffs, I've seen them rutting in mid October. You have to be in there to really know but the 10th-30th should be money!

I have the same dates in the ruby in Nevada and I have done some reseach and I will be hunting the 19th till the day before Thanksgiving the 26th. That is the week after the full moon. Hopefully that will help trigger the rut.

The 20th-30th is a great time.
Good luck and keep us posted if you smack a monster.

"Hunt hard or go home!"

I also have a hunt in Southern Idaho. I have researched and even the biologist states the pet of the rut is usaully between the 12th and the 15th. I plan to go up on the 14th and stay through the end on the hunt - the 25th.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-03-08 AT 07:38PM (MST)[p]well i guess i should hunt the entire season, i wish. im going to hunt the 14-15-16th, then the 22-30th. i would like a buck to hang on the wall (doesnt everyone though}

Living in MT, I have hunted rutting mulies for quite a few years with a general tag.

I will say this. If I had to pick, I'd go a little before the peak of the rut, not after. Mulies rut earlier than whitetails, and often there is a misconception that "the later the better" for rutting bucks. I would disagree. I seem to see more big bucks slightly before (the 10th-ish) than closer to the tail end of the hunt. They are ramped up then and out seeking does coming into heat. They may not have their nose stuck to a females backside, but they are moving around. Many times, it seems if you wait until the week of Thanksgiving, the first rut is mostly over and the real big bucks are back to hiding. Once the big 'uns head for their pocket, the little bucks go crazy over what is left, creating the illusion that "the rut is on HARD".

just my two cents.

+1 on the_deer_hunter

slightly pre-rut is when bucks are most active and susceptible to calling, rattling etc in the river bottoms.
