Mike, emailed me this to post...you better fill us in with the story cause I know nothing about this buck other than it is huge and looks like you he's on the front of a giant boat. (jk)

The Mundy Buck.

The antlers from the Mundy buck are truly the most magnificent you will ever find on a mule deer. One glance from any mule deer lover and instantly you are amazed at the combination of width, height, and mass making this the epitome of trophy mule deer. Just how big is this buck? The buck holds claim to the world record for the Burkett System for displacement of water with the antlers weighing 13 1/2 lbs. It also is the widest mule deer entered in the Boone and Crockett books coming in at 49 2/8 inches, has a net typical frame of 237 inches and 51 3/8 inches of non-typical points. Add all of this up and it gives you a final score of 288 6/8 B&C and ranking #31 all time.

However, the story behind the Mundy buck is interesting in its own right. According to Bill Mundy, owner of the Mundy Ranch in New Mexico, this buck was harvested by Frank Maestas from Albuquerque in 1962. Frank was operating some heavy equipment for Bill on the ranch and doing a good job. To compensate Frank for his fine work, Bill gave Frank a free hunt on the Mundy Ranch. Not only did he give him a free hunt, but told Frank where a huge buck had been hanging out. Apparently Bill?s 14-year-old son, Jim, had been in sheep camp all summer on the ranch, had seen a huge buck many times and knew of his whereabouts. However, the deal was made that if Frank did harvest this huge buck, the ranch would keep the head but Frank would get credit for it in Boone and Crockett.

The day of the hunt, Frank was given a map of where this buck was and how to get there. Within 2 1/2 hours Frank had spotted the buck just 200 yards from where Jim told him he would be. From here the rest is history. Frank harvested the buck and is the official hunter in the Boone and Crockett book while the head stayed at the Mundy Ranch according to the original deal. However, this past spring, Ed Maestas, one of Frank?s nephews, met with the current owner of the Mundy Buck (Rainbow?s End Bed and Breakfast in Challis, Idaho) and explained that the wrong uncle has his name in the record book. Frank?s brother, David, should have his name in the record book instead. Frank did not shoot the buck, but was the one who took it to be scored. David was the one who sold the antlers to Mundy for $100. The photos here are courtesy of Ed, who wanted to share them with others who would appreciate the true story and contemporary photos of the "Maestas Buck".

Score: 288 6/8 B&C
Points: 12x10
Main Beams: R-30 4/8" L-31 6/8"
Outside Spread: 49 2/8"
Hunter: Dave Maestas

LAST EDITED ON Nov-13-08 AT 01:00PM (MST)[p]My favorite deer of all time, none better. Can you believe a gross typical frame of 246 with 30 and 31 inch main beams and a 19 inch G4? Doesn't get any better than that.

WYMOOSE....Iappreciate the help. Still I have not quite figured out how to upload a picture from my emails. But what I was initially trying to accomplish is getting advice and possibily a referrence of a good taxidermist near or in ST George UT. This is how I have acquired the Mundy Buck from Rainbows End BB. No
shoulder mount, only the head as you see here. So any of you who may know an honest and experienced taxidermist please let me know. I recently acquired the whole collection from Rainbowsendbb
and this buck needs to get on the wall. thanks. feel free to call me at 435-216-8126. mike foote.

I,ll just say it was a give....because it really was! Honestly Ihad no idea exactly what kinduv deal I ended up with until I was
informed by other collectors of what they would pay me for this collection. There was good reason why the previous owner basically gave the collection to me. I wont disclose further info. But it was cool and thoughtful of him.

I thought Doc Meyer bought that collection? Did you get the originals or replicas? I'm just curious as I have a few friends that held the Mundy buck from Docs collection, or so I thought.

Regardless, that has to be one of the top 3 greatest bucks ever harversted, if not the very best!

They are all the originals....after I received this collection I
met up w/ Jack Reneau in Montana and got duplcate certifications for each individual head and made arrangements to tranfer my name into the ownership for the record books. Yes Doc
meyers did have the Mundy Buck for a minute. Which reminds me...
how can I get a hold of Doc? I want to find out what happend that compelled Doc in giving the buck back to rainbowsend.

Steelheader, you are more than correct. however long ago that took place that kinduv activity is unexceptable. Even to this day he is still serving his penance. He knows he made a mistake and regrets it immensely. Regardlessof his mistake I believe we all have. I know that I have. The important fact is we learn from our mistakes forget and forgive. I know he works hard to compensate as well for his mistake.

I agree with Huntsonora, the Mundy buck is King. The picture does not honor this buck rightly. The Chips Lake is #1, but I'd shoot this buck over any if given the opportunity.

AZMIGHTYMULIES - I'm just wondering what you do with all these monster bucks you buy. Do you have them on display or a museum something? So is rainbowsend no longer a bed and breakfast?

I was told by Aly Mathews that they were selling most of that property including the museum. They were going to quit the bed and breakfast but I know they were in full swing operation last summer. and no about the sheep. only the mule deer. I am a avid mule deer hunter and videographer. photography is what I,ll commence once I spend 15k for equipment. I do display my collection and will be doing a number of other things w/ them as well as many other mule deer. This comming year I will start a
Guide service for AZ Strip, etc. I will keep everyone on here in tune to new product Im manufacturing and many other diffrent product that no one else offers.

Mike, did you get any shed muley antlers from Aly? I know he had some big ones - one of which I would love to get back from him.

I sold him a 124" single a few years ago, and if he's getting rid of everything, I would really like to get it back - somehow. Here's a picture:

Dleonard3, that is an awesome single! what happend to the other side. I know for a fact he does not have that antler. is that all though? I thought you said a set. But I,ll tell ya what, I have seen that antler before. I do believe it was at the antler fest this last year. some guy bought it for $500.00. The individual prior owner only had it for 8-9 months.

I got that shed from a lady in Texas, she got it from her dad in Colorado, and he supposedly picked it up at a yard sale. Nobody knows anything about the other side. It was the biggest single in my small collection, and I'm really kicking myself for selling it - I needed the money at the time.

Anyway, if there was a way to get it back, I would be thrilled.

I dont blame ya buddy...but hey I talk to alot of people in buying/selling mule deer racks. If I hear or see of this awesome
shed I will let ya know.Even if Im in a place where I have too buy it for ya I would be more than willing to do and work w/ ya on that. Im not at all interested in buying singles, especially of that caliber. That would drive me nuts just wondering about the other side, the what if question.LOL.

Some legendary animals you picked up there.

Just wondering how the shoulders got cut off the Mundy Buck?

A few years back I spent time at Don Schauffler's place in Ennis Mt.
He blew my mind.
Aside from getting to handle the Broder buck, I got to fondle the Bannister buck, a 322" non typical, that monster 300'er with the drop tine from Utah and so many other mind numbing monsters that I almost went blind.
He has some sheds with mass so mind boggling they defy description.

Many years prior I got to hold the Burris buck in my hands.

Kinda neat to have been able to hold both world records in my hot little hands.

Glad to see someone who respects the historical value of those monster bucks has the collection.

Look forward to seeing how you display them.

HH

That's amazing.... interesting how that all turned out. I'd never gotten the story behind it, thanks for sharing it.

WOW!!! that is a great buck and a once in a life time probably. Cannot say enough about a buck of that quility. Thanks for sharing and giving us all something to dream and hope for in the future.

A 237" frame is in and of itself absolutely awesome!
Congrats on the aqcuisition.
I live in AZ and if you are around AZMIGHTYMULEYS and have the collection on display I would love to see it!

Doesnt the guy from rainbows end have the same notariety as "CASS" around here? I remember some crazy stuff years ago on this site! SOme of it was hilarious!
Anybody else remember what I am talking about?
Jeff

Not trying to stir anything up here. But sure we all make mistakes but the arrogance Aly Bruner had shows that this was probably not a one time thing.

Just curious what does a 200 inch mule deer mount go for these days?
