Archery Mule Deer Hunt

"The worst year that we've ever had of Muley hunting,since we've been outfiiting" is what Sean told me after our hunt came to an end,not just on our hunt,but for the whole season combined.
Well,it's pretty much the same ole' story,just a different state.The weather was warmer than usual for this time of year out there,with minimal big buck activity.I saw the biggest buck of my entire trip off of the road,while driving up for this hunt.He was a beautiful 5x5 with matching kickers off of each G2,well over the 170" mark! I spent the next 5 days covering several square miles of rangeland trying to spot a respectable shooter buck,with no success until the last day.We were into plentiful deer every day,with the biggest buck's only in the mid 140" range and smaller.These are considered to be "seed" buck's out here,so we couldn't take one of them.The week brought a couple of fronts through with snow,but no more action because of it.We spent many hours on ridgetops,glassing the open country below for any chance of spotting a shooter to attempt to put a stalk on,with no payoffs.We spotted a couple of nice 150"+ buck's off a ridgetop about a mile away on the final morning,and went after them quickly.We watched them go up the ridge to bed,and moved in within 200 yds of the bedded herd,and spent the rest of the day on the side of the mountain wating them out.As dusk approached,the wind started swirling,and had us pinned down while all we could do was helplessly watch the potential targets feed off the ridgetop and away from us in the fading light.It was a very frustrating trip in this sense,but it was also very rewarding in the fact that it was kind of a "reunion" trip for Myself,Sean,and Mighty Joe White from Mossy Oak Productions,to be able to share this hunt and memory together again,and have fun doing it together,forging more of our friendship bond!
Here's a little collage of the trip summary;
