Does Anybody here use these? What types of situations have you used them in and what resulted, Did it spook them or did it work? i have observed deer using the language and i have to say these critters really use this stuff. I am looking into trying the grunts and bleets as i know that the deer will be very vocal right now being that they are rutting and in heat. Im curious as to who is using them and them and what reaction they are getting.

I've called whitetails in both bucks and does. I've rattled bucks in that were grunting all the way in and have had whitetails come into a tree stand grunting along the way...but I've never heard a mule deer buck make any noise.

I was just talking to a friend back east specifically about this and am curious as to others experience. Not sure mule deer are very vocal, but could you get their interest during the rut with some grunts???

This is an interesting topic.

I've only heard one muley buck grunt, and he did it very aggressively and frequently. He was a big bodied dominant buck that I heard grunting before I saw him, as he came down to run off the smaller bucks I was watching. I actually watched him mount 1 doe.

This was in the middle of the rut on a cold late season bow hunt.

I actually got a shot off at this bruiser, but choked it after I tore a rotator cuff drawing down on him at an odd angle. It pretty much ruined the rest of my hunt as I couldn't draw my bow for months afterwards.

I have a brother-in-law that claims he heard a medium sized buck mumbling to himself. He had just been pushed away by a bigger buck and seemed a little irritated.

I've tried bleeting and grunting to Mule deer, but the best I've been able to do was get them to stop for a second. They don't seem to come to me using these techniques.

Rattling works pretty good though.

I've seen a muley buck chasing a doe around and he was grunting the whole time.
I've also called mule deer in with predator calls.
Also, Eastmans makes a call for calling in mule deer and it works. Mostly on does and small bucks but it will work on big bucks too occasionally. They also have a video describing how to use it and it shows Gordon Eastman along with friends calling in mule deer. Its called "How to Talk to the Deer." and it was put out by "Eastmans Outdoor World" which may be different than present day Eastmans as it was put together by Gordon Eastman as mentioned above.
Also, I've read on this site about people grunting in muley bucks during the rut to take pictures.
Yes, it can be done! fatrooster.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-01-08 AT 06:55PM (MST)[p]Hanging in a tree while elk-hunting over a water hole this past October I observed several mule deer, both bucks and does, frequently grunting at each other (every five seconds or so). It was like they were having conversations.

It was the first time I've been so close to so many that weren't aware of my presense and therefore not overly spooked, other than their normal cautiousness around water.

I have used the call mentioned earlier by Eastmans with some success. It is great for stopping deer. I have called in lots of does and smaller bucks. There is a simular elk call made the same way that makes great cow calls. That one works too.

I have used the call Eastmans make and called in several does and one smaller buck on the last day of a muzzy hunt years ago near Myton. Never called in anything big so I gave up on it several years ago. I want to try using decoys, but I am afraid of our trespassing neibors shooting me while they are bow hunting with their rifles.

I was also on Diamond a couple weeks ago and watched several bucks grunt and wheeze.

I had 2 170" muleys fighting in my back yard the other night. It started with a high piched bawl then antlers started crashing. I walked out to see(it was dark) and when I turned the corner of the house about 10 deer busted out of there. The bucks kept fighting, grunting the whole time but what was cool was all the smaller bucks and does were scattering bleating to each other as they went. When the bucks separated they started after the does and I was nearly run over, after the fight they went quiet. I have doe's in my yard every day and the only time I've heard them talk is if they get separated. That night was the only time I've heard bucks talking. Mule deer are just different, they seem to be more visual during the rut, they aren't nearly as aggressive as WT's, and they roam... alot. I guess you could try talking to them but I've seen them respond more to varmint calls than grunting.

That's an interesting point. My buddy and I had a pretty nice buck run right up to us when we wereusing a predator call.

The crazy thing is that the buck new we were there, as he saw us working our way to where we set up. He just stayed motionless as if he thought we couldn't see him. We checked him out, and then went on about our business and setup for some 'yote action.

He ran right up to us shortly after we started calling.
