Received the picture last night from r270 and a brief story about the Buck. For some reason, I seem to have seen this same picture somewhere else but can't remember where.

Thanks for posting this picture, this buck was killed by my grandpa back in the early 50s in the Aspen-Basalt area and as far a I know the rack is still hanging in the tree where he left them. when I asked him why he didnt keep the horns he told me why pack out somthing you cant eat!! Over the years I tried to get him to take me back to where they were but we never found the time. This is one of my favorite pictures, a true classic also a PIG of a buck. Any guesses on what he would score?

It would score alot.........he can't be the guy that killed it though, he isn't camo'd, doesn't have a scope on his rifle and isn't packing binos.....wtf?

r270,

Charlie, was this picture ever in one of the major hunting magazines? Like in the back of OLD HUNTING PICTURES??
I have seen this picture before somewhere.

he is a solid 140 b&c. i would not pack that little fellar's head gear out either. the second pack trip should obviously be neck meat and jiblits:)

As far as I know no one in my family has sent the photo to anybody we only have 2 copys my uncle has one and I have one I was asked several years ago to send it in and the computer that we had could not handle the whole process so it never happened dont remember which magizine ??

That picture made my day. Very cool! I'd say he is 30-32"s wide and high 190's gross. Thanks for sharing.

I have read many stories over the years where old timers were reported to make that same comment. Each time I have to wonder why they didn't just shoot a doe if that is how they felt about it.

Oh - I know for sure he is a lot bigger than a 140 class buck!. I don't think I would say 190 though 175-180 range is my guess. Dang nice buck!

Maybe you should take closer look at this buck. He would definately gross in the upper 190's, and may break 200".

Family-dude,

I think most of the ol'timers were conservationists by nature so shooting a doe would only cut into their future food supply & secondly they wanted all the meat they could get with their tag a big body buck gave them the most smackin for the $5- tag fee.

In speaking with gramps & other old timers they got a kick out of folks (like most MM'ers) that got a hard/on over horns. Specially the type who couldn't wait to pull out there tape measurer on an animal to get B&C numbers, they had appreciated a large set of antlers, but what gave them wood was 250 lbs of food for the winter. Not setting around stroking a set of antlers.

You dont need a scope or binos if you know where your going and what your doing they do help but i would like to see you shoot open sights its hard but it can be done.

Hey 225,

Think you might have bitten off more than you can chew, if you are refuring to D13er post above. It was a joke about the old pre-camo days and as far as open sights, he has taken deer in WY just a couple of years ago with an old open sighted 1895 rifle.

he breaks 200 easy. Everyone knows real hunters dont use lever-guns, they cant hit the broadside of a barn from 50 yards.Love the old-time pictures.
