just got back from kansas on a solo hunt.
after drawing a tag and not knowing anything
about that state, i asked for sny help on
where to start. once again, someone from this
forum came through. JCFORD sent me a pm with
a place to start. thanks again.

if you want to test your stalking skill, this
is a place to do that. with mostly very flat
prarie, finding anything to hide behind is a
challenge (be ready to crawl, alot)

had a 5 hour stalk through this.

the barenness that is kansas

and a little different terrain near a river. and
wow look at that forrest.

a "high" place to spot from

and a successful 2 hour stalk, to 56 yards.
and now a 2 hour wait for him to get up. when
he finally did, he chased a smaller buck off,
and he came to 45 yrds and was quartered away.
i don't even remember aiming. the arrow hit its
mark, and i knew he was mine. he ran toward me
an stoppedagain at 30 yrds. one more shot and
he dropped 15 yards from my feet.

at 26 1/2" wide,he's not the best deer i saw,
or even stalked, but overall i'm very pleased
with him. i have to say, he not bad for a first
time solo trip to a plains state. the people
i meet were great and i'll definately be back.

thanks again to jcford for steering my in a right
direction.

Sweet buck with a bow!! Nice job. Looks like its not too stalk-friendly terrain.

Congratulations! I hunted Units 1 and 2 for whitetails. I just could not justify the extra $100 for the muley tag. I wish I had now, I had some really nice opportunities on muleys.

Nice buck and definately a challenge to stalk!
By your pic, it looks like you placed your shot right behind his left eye. Is that true??

LAST EDITED ON Dec-03-08 AT 07:04AM (MST)[p]Whats the deal with the brain matter coming out by the ear?

the first shot was quartered away and hit just in frontof his hind quarter to the off shoulder. the second shot he was 30 yrds facing stright away with his head turned back looking at me. i later found out that there was no follow up shot needed, but with the strong angle of the first shot, i took the only shot i had which was the base of his neck. he jumped the string just enough toto hit him in the skull. that brough thim to the ground in about 2 seconds. not a great follow up, but it certainly finished the job!

Nice buck! That country looks as tough as the eastern Montana country we hunt with rifles. I can only imagine trying to stalk around in country like that with a stick and a string. Congratulations, Smokepoler63
