My friend is still holding onto a Colorado "Governors" tag. the season ends Dec. 31 and he still hasn't found a shooter buck (200"+)(His excuse is that he just had a baby born last week!) With only a few weeks left any leads would be awesome. Please PM me if needed.

Phil

check with Gordan Blay, one the best guide's in Colo. he guided the Gov tag holder last year......

My friend was super lucky and won the tag in the raffle/lottery. He's not in a position to spend the amount most want for guiding a governor's tag. It would be nice to be that lucky!

Thanks, Phil

Live here on the So. Ute Rez....seen tons of deer over 200". On and off the rez, Is your buddy offering finders fee?

Yep, 200" deer are everywhere! Are they behind every bush this year?

This area produces many big deer. This year alone the Rez produced 15 deer over 200" One being 243", One 237" and one going 225". Many other deer this year eclipsed the 185" mark which many, (Not I) classify a shooter deer.

I'm sure the guy who needs help is thankful for the help Rez. Don't let the negative posts over run the people who will/have offered help.

Not being negative at all, you just dont hear about guys seeing "tons" of 200" deer in a particular area. 200" deer are pretty rare creatures, just ask your bff Doyle

185" deer are nothing. Add 15" or trash which is only 7.5" per side and you have a 200" gross deer. Not that rare. Ive actually seen more 200" deer than I have bucks that were 30"+ wide.

Ive spent time on the Southern Ute back in the early and mid 90's, its amazing habitat and I have seen some great deer there but you dont see "tons" of 200" deer anywhere, ask Browtines bff Doyle

There is bigger bucks being killed down here than there ever was in the 90's. This year has been a banner year for the So. Ute.

They are both in the same general location Manny, the Southern Ute is near Ignacio, CO and the Jicarilla is near Dulce, NM. Both are in the 4 corners area

Map quest those cities and look at a map, it'll give you an idea

??????????????????????????????

Why would anyone need "help" to fill a Governor's tag? Sounds like a stress free hunt to me. Plenty of time, no crowds, and you get to shoot a nice buck. I would kill a buck that I liked, not one that "the book" told me was nice.

Still no buck. The hard part is the expectation with such a good tag in such a good state. He has looked over a lot of deer but haven't found a big shooter.

The hard part is trying to hold down a full time job and take care of a big family. You can't be everywhere at once and hunt all the time. Plus someone might know where a big one is. It never hurts to ask.

your right! but by todays standards a price tag usually come's with the help, heck it can't hurt to call Gorden Blay and just ask for some sugestions as to where to look, has he looked up in the gunison area?.......

He knows someone who is looking around gunnison. As of last week the 2 auction tags still haven't killed either and they are spending the $$.

Good luck, i woudlnt have procrastinated a tag
like that no matter the circumstances.
Let us know what happens.
Jeff

Just go out to unit 21 and drive the oil roads south of town your bound to find a buck over 180 down there this time of year.

Hey Browtine.... I thought I was your BFF... after all, I did your sweet looking picture.. lol Good to see you at the big house and family is getting big. This is all I have to say to you...

I would do yourself a favor and get a hold of Hunt-Rez and see what they have there because I did see a couple of those big deer cross over in NM well I was down there hunting.
With the snow they have gotten the deer are down there for sure now.

I still cannot believe he hasn't found one buck that would make him happy to have on his wall.

Hey Hunt_Rez,
Can a Non-Tribal member hunt the Ute?
Just checked the Southern Ute website and was trying to find information, etc.
Thanks

Well anyways, Good luck to the tag holder, i just can't believe you'd have such a hard time in Colorado finding a monster on the winter range.....

He'll be out the next 3 days, I have to work then heading out of town. unless he gets one today I won't see it till I get back. Over the weekend only small bucks and does, the big ones are holed up. At least the weather will be nice after one of the snowyest Decembers on record out here.

Here's a suggestion!Tell your buddy to go out and have fun hunting!Quit putting pressure on himself.Go out and have fun! After all, isn't that really what it's all about?Hunting is not nearly as fun when there is pressure getting in the way!NT.

Let see the big forky ;)

Gosh whats this guys problem? If I drew the OR Governers tag, I would know right where to go, and when. A true sportsman dreams about this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Gordan Blay sold his outfitting business to Eric Layman and I was wondering if anybody has hunted the same area with Eric. Does a person have to have a outfitter for that area? How hard is it to get a nonresident archery license? Much Appreciated.

This may not be totally correct...but close. The two raffle tag holders shot 180+ type bucks. One GOV tag shot a 190+ buck, and one ate his tag. Pretty dismal. Probably not worth the dough to buy one of those tags! It's too bad that the hunters didn't have more access.

They had all that time to hunt and killed lil bucks. Why even buy the tag if your only going to hunt a few days just get a state tag it would be way cheaper! I seen deer bigger then what they killed tried to let a few of them no never heard back from anyone. O well there loss they would be bigger for me this year.

ended up with a 180 buck. Had passed on a couple of upper 190's during the season. You can't shoot a 200+ buck if you shoot the first 195 you see. so sometimes it doesn't work out, but you got to hunt.
