I usaully try to support most of the DWRs ideas but not this one. I can not see that a 5 day hunt will help the Stansburys out at all or at least very little. My problem with this idea is.... the unit is comprised of three mountain ranges (Oquirrhs, Stansburys and Onaquis)I think all three ranges together total about around 11-13% buck to doe. The Oquirrhs are about 75% private, with the highest buck to doe ratio of the 3 mountain ranges and I would guess that it has a higher than 20% buck to doe. With the other two ranges far below 10%. I wish that the Oquirrhs and Stansburys could be separated for management. The deer winter in completely different areas on these ranges and the Stansburys and Onaqui getting most of the pressure. Now for the 5 day hunt problem. It will start on the Wed. after the traditional Saturday, so most people are going to hunt somewhere else on Saturday and then have a second opening day on Wed. on the Oquirrh/ Stansbury unit. This will cause more crowding in the other 9 day hunt areas and basically have the same amout of pressure as usual on the 5 day hunt areas. For the people down South that thought their 5 day hunt produced great results, well we're talking apples and oranges for a comparison. First, in the Southern units the 5 day hunts started the same day as the 9 day areas, so there was only one opening day. Secondly, I believe that those Southern deer herds migrated out into the open desert areas a lot more during the second weekend and many of those bucks were spared by cutting out that second weekend. This will not be the case with these new 5 day hunts. I beg the DWR to separate the Oquirrhs from the other two Mountain ranges and they could be managed much better. Well, I guess only time will tell.

When you consider the amount of people that will tag out opening day and the amount of people that don't want to miss work wednesday, i don't think that the opening of these 5 day units will be as bad as it may sound.

I personally like the way they structured the five day hunts for the five sub units.

Plus i believe that creating these five sub units is a step towards micro managing the entire state. Probably wishful thinking but maybe if these five sub units are successful they will realize the bennefits of managing a smaller area. Only time will tell.
