I just watched Eastmans hunting program, all about D. Long and Nate hunting public high country in Colo. Looked to be a well earned 180 class buck David took with his bow after being back in there 5 days. Talk about a honey hole, sweet looking country and a few dandy bucks to boot. The footege taken was just awesome. I guess you can tell, i enjoyed the show.

This was one of the Best hunting shows i've seen on TV in quite a while! Congrats to David and Eastmans for an outstanding piece of work!

I watched the show last night as well and feel exactly the same. All Eastmans shows are good but this one seemed to impress more than most.

GO HEELS!

That was a cool show.
My son says to me "Dad, let's do a muley hunt like that".
It looked very similar to our hugh country Blacktail hunts.

Good show, he stuck that buck perfectley.

Agreed!! Definately the only one to watch. Have tried watching some of the other big name shows but when you catch a glimpse of the high fence or hearing the feeder turning on is a disappointment!(whitetail hunts) Just wish Eastman's would drop a few more hints on their location than just the state. I know im wihsing!

Yeah, Outdoor Channel. Get his book DIY PUBLIC LAND MULIES THE BOTTOM LINE

Tons of info and great deer. The man is LEGIT!

I watched it too, great show !!! David Long is a muley nut for sure. They said that all he hunts is mule deer ? I couldnt do that.

watched it, great show as it always is, but something about high country bucks really gets me going. I second the recomondation on david longs book and also another good read is mike eastmans hunting high county mule deer.

I watched it too, just to see David's hunt...the guy is a legend.
I enjoy the Eastmans' show and theme, but trying to listen to Mike or Guy stutter through the narration is just painful sometimes. They need to just hand the hosting reins over to some of the other guys with a little more charisma.

He even had another hunter blow a stalk. I know it is t.v. but it was handled with class. Bet that's the kind of guy he is. mtmuley

It was a great show, a 5 day hunt with only what he had in his back pack(wow). Its all about being patient and the love of the sport..He's DVD and mags. are also awsome!

Yea, that would be great if he'd tell us which unit then we all could go there, ruin the draw odds, ruin the hunt quality, drive the price of the landowner vouchers sky high and give us something else to complain about on here. I can't believe David didn't tell us the unit! He must not be that great of a guy?
LOL

I never implied he was a bad guy for not teling us the unit... Just asked a simple question maybe I should have posted. Does anyone know what units contaIN that simlar type of terrain. My guess would be 54 or 53 but thats just a guess.....

Foothills, I was just ribbin' ya a little.
Most of Colorado's high country produces bucks like that if you just scout for the country.

the eastmans put out some great stuff
i saved the d long episode. man it got me stoked.just the kind of show to watch before you head out to hunt.

I think people liked it becuase the editing and music was different.

Looks like they made some changes to the creation of the show.

Agreed The Eastmans can be a bit rough to listen to at times.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-23-09 AT 01:56PM (MST)[p]I agree with you guys GREAT HC hunt! The Eastmans shows are accurate depictions/hunts that we everyday hunter can relate to. Yes, they do have there sponsors and it is a business they run via subscriptions, but they truly want to help the everyday hunter. I had a chance a few times to meet Guy, David and some of there people during the show season and there are sincere about helping hunters who love to hunt the west. I am a eastern hunter that needs all the guidance I can get in learning the tricks of the trade in the High Country. It is a show that I can relate to! I watch and DVR almost every hunting show that my cable provider has available. There are not to many that do what they do, actually very few! I will continue to support what they stand for as long as they stay the course. I kind of like Guy and Mike's narrations of the shows...why they are not polished BS specialist they are just western hunters and they just tell it like it is there way.

got a chance to watch last night, Man I have'nt done a hunt like that in years...

I'd like to again before I get too old!

The unit he is hunting is not a premier unit. I promise you, he worked hard for that buck.

Your absolutely right the unit is not a premier unit.
But it is some very remote country and hard to hunt but easy to get away from people.

The fact that David has hunted it a few times now with a bow shows he has found his way around it. Experiencing any unit several time will only give you a better chance at success the next time you hunt it.

And yes most of Colorado's high country can grow and hold large bucks like that.

With big deer honeyholes, units, mountain ranges, ect., being priceless now days, it makes me wonder how even a few on this site knows the unit David Long was in?

I am guessing the people who say they know the unit, have probably scouted or hunted that same basin before? Just curious.

This was definately one of the best hunts that has been on the program for a while. What a shot.

The fact that David kills BIG bucks evey year on public land has a lot more to due with his commitment, skill and determination than it does the units he hunts. Rest assured, he hunts units with trophy potential but that is a small factor in the overall equation.

That is right on the money.

Here is a fact for everyone 2007 was David Longs first High Country bow hunt. He chose to hunt Colorado he spent 9 days hiked 64 miles and climbed 26,000 feet in total elevation.
He also killed a 200 5/8 Velvet Pope and Young buck with an outside spread of 28 inches 6 inch bases and a typical frame of 190 4/8.

2008 he killed the 180 class buck.

About his 2007 Colorado Archery Mule deer hunt.

I decided to take on what is arguably the toughest bowhunting challenge in North America.

I can tell you for a fact that it is tough unforgiving country where the Deep green basins surrounded by high jagged rim rock are just as vacant as they are sometimes plentifull with deer in the early season in the High Country. Deer seen one day and forever gone the next and a average hunt elevation of around 10,500-12000 feet.

As you stated about honey holes and units being priceless I agree and out of respect.

I will just say it is not a great unit but they are just great hunters.

Just saw where on Eastmans.com you can order this edition on a dvd. I'm sure at some point in the future it'll be packaged in another dvd, but I wanted mine sooner rather than later. Hopefully it will be here in a few days it was a great show.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-04-09 AT 11:10AM (MST)[p]I am headed to the high country to chase muleys next fall with a muzzleloader. It is hard enough getting within range with a muzzy, the guys that do it consistently with a bow are unbelievable.

And you can bet I won't be telling the unit/location of my area.

Got to love that high country! And the bucks from there actually taste good, no sage!

venor, ergo sum (I hunt, therefore I am)

I'm also heading to the high country this fall to match my wits with them muleys. I'm heading with a bow in hand. I plan on scouting every other week so I should be able to find some deer. Summer cant get here soon enough!

I ran into david this archery season the day before the opener. Turns out me and Mr.Long have similar tastes in hunting areas.

So did you kill anything?

David is a great hunter and knows his stuff. I missed the shows, but will catch them in the future if I can. The irony of the whole deal to me is that David lives in some of the very best hunting in Wyoming, yet he chooses to go to Colorado to chase big bucks with a bow. Draw your own conclusions about the relative quality of deer hunting in the two states. I do not recall seeing David in any pictures with big bucks taken in Wyoming the past couple of years.

Rumor has it he is moving to Denver. Also, David did shoot a nice non typical buck in Wyoming in 2007.

Saw parts of it back in Jan, but just watched it all on-line on their web site. It is definitely oneo of the best bowhunting shows I've seen. I just recently finished up his book also, I barely put the book down once I started.

Come on Summer!!!!!!!!! I can't stand much more of this snow. I need to be above treeline.
