OK guys i did want to do a DIY public land Muley and elk hunt but it seems it is hard to draw both in most states. So i am ok with just a mulie hunt.. What state is it easy to draw in as well as has alot of deer. I dont care for the biggest i just want a good respectable 130inch mule deer. I want to go somewhere that i can see 10-15 deer a day. 1-2 bucks a day. ANd i want it to be somewhere that i have a GOOD chance of being drawn. I need info. State and unit. I know nothing about hunting out west.
THanks for any help

Look at Colorado, they have deer and elk hunts that run togther and alot of them are over the counter for elk, and you can draw deer with 0 points.

Use this link to find a hunt that works out for you.

I just dont know where to find public land info out at. I have been looking at different state f&G websites for 3 days now. Idaho is the only one that you can search by animal and it tells you what the success rate is and how much public land is in each unit.

Is any NTL forest public land that you can hunt??

THe more i look into this hunting out west the more i want to figure it out.

We dont have much public land in texas so i dont know how it all works.

Wyoming and Idaho have some areas where you would have a lot of fun hunting deer. In Colorado, you could get your hands on both a deer and elk tag in a number of areas.

You can hunt National Forest and BLM. A lot of units in ID, WY and CO have plenty of huntable ground. Of course, it does get hunted hard in most areas that have enough tags that you could get one with no points.
Go here: http://huntodds.monstermuleys.com/
Click on Colorado and search deer 0 points. There will be a number of hunts you can draw. Most of the units you can get an elk tag for also.

in idaho you could buy deer and elk tags over the counter for most units but unless you are bowhunting or want to hunt the backcountry units you will most likely have seperate seasons

Could you give me any unit suggestions?? Im not asking for exact spots or anything. I am a texas boy who has never done this kind of hunting in my life. I just want a good 130 inch buck. Also is there anyghing in montana worth looking

Oh and by the way guys i will be BOWHUNTING only

Well that changes things, you can put in for a Utah statewide archery deer tag and buy a elk tag over the counter and hunt both at the sametime.

If there is Natinal Forrest or BLM land you can hunt it in any state if you have a tag for that area.

There are Many colorado units you can draw with 0 points and get a elk tag over the counter, Im not going to give you any units, just do what Founder said in his post and you will find a hunt that you can do with 0 points, do a little of your own reserch, its not hard but you have to try. The link me and Founder gave you will tell you everything you need to know about any unit in the state you are looking into. And you can usually download a map of all the units on the different states web sites.

Get to work and good luck.

JT, If you want to consider colorado, do as Brian and the other suggested and check to draw odds, write down all the units in which you could draw for.Next get a copy of the harvest statistics for colorado, they post them one a year in colorado outdoor magazine or I think you can get them from col. div of wildlife website. Now out of the units you qualify for find the units with the highest success ratio and look at the kill ratios(bucks or does). Then when you have figured out a couple good units get the maps out. find out where they are and call the division of wild life in those areas. The colo. dow has a map on their website showing migration routes and so on. Find out from the wildlife office in those areas if the units are a migration unit or if they hold deer all year round, ask what areas in the unit get hunted hard and where the hot spots are.Once you get all this narrowed down you need to make some scouting trips. This is just what we have done and it works for us, We learn alot of new areas , it is not always the best and it is some trial and error. You also might get lucky on here and find some of the nice helpful people who have done some of this already and are willing to share their secrets. Good luck

Idaho has become way over hunted in the otc tag units. The best thing to do is put in for a draw unit for both deer and elk. If you want some information on Idaho just PM me and I can share what tags to put in for and what areas to hunt if you don't get drawn. I know the rifle areas, still working on the archery areas. Thanks

You can find specific data on deer and elk for colorado on their website. Go to statistics and you can look up for each unit and each species: number of tags, number of hunters, success broken down by does/bucks, for each season.

you will get a lot further asking for info on websites if you show that you are willing to do some work yourself, don't give up so easily. 3 days of looking doesn't constitute much commitment. Instead of asking for what unit, you should be asking how to find the info you seek on your own.

For some starters, they call the units around Meeker the "deer factory". Do some research on units in that area, come up with some specific units and ask some specific questions and you will probably get some useful info.

After all, do you REALLY want someone to post what unit is good when thousands of others are reading it and might show up there next fall along with you?

go buy the new issue of eastmans hunting journal, it's the mule deer issue and has a multi page special section on montana elk and mule deer. . .

My vote is for Colorado. You can draw a hunt with the caliber of buck you are interested in on a second choice and buy an over the counter elk tag for 500$. So for less than a grand you can hunt for both deer and elk and you can do it every year and still build some points for one of the top units.
