LAST EDITED ON Feb-12-09 AT 06:45AM (MST)[p]I heard a rumor that the amount of people putting in for hunts have jumped up by a huge margin, as much as 40% this year, I don't know how anyone would know this already since all the applicants have not put in yet, but do you all think that they are up or down? I am talking Utah applicants.

With this economy?
I'd think it would be just the opposite especially where you have to front the tag fees.

I'm sure non resident applications are way up as they can apply for all limited entry species and all OIL species. Tag fees are not required up front. But a hunting license is. I can't believe the resident applications have changed to much.

Resident applications will increase because you know have 11, 12, and 13 year olds applying. In Utah, that number might be significant.

Lonetree has it nailed about the increase being due to nonresidents. I personally doubled my applications this year. Went from apply for just elk to elk and deer. Only cost $10 more. I am sure that are many nonres. that will do 3 to 4 times the number of applicants to include other species. So I am sure that the rumor is true.

Of course I know that my odds are going to take a big hit this year as well..........

venor, ergo sum (I hunt, therefore I am)

Add another one to the elk pool. I think I am a few yrs from drawing a deer tag but if I luck out I will be begging for some help. Books archery.

I think that since they changed the law to allow 12 year olds hunt big game are beginning to take affect in the drawing. I don't think they would add an additional %40. Plus, the fact you can get a preference point from your first choice and draw your second choice without losing your points there may be more incentive putting in for the draw. I know a few people that would put in for a preference point and wait to buy excess archery tags after the draw. Now they can get both a point and the tag in the draw and not have to worry about buying the tag later.
