CO UNIT 61

Would also like to see a response. I have 6 PP and was thinking of burning them in 61 for deer this year so I could learn the area for Elk the next year.

unit 61 is okay. everyone says its more exciting than it really is. just like any normal hunt

You a Resident or Non-resident?? If NR, you don't have enough points yet.

havent hunted there in a while, i'm non res with 5 pp just biding my time like most of us, just hoping to see something good coming out of unit. have hunted 22, 2 yrs ago did ok all killed but nothing tremendous! considering muzz hunt there maybe to up the ant'e....

6 Pts has a long shot, but elk in that unit takes 14 Pts. I have 13 and would only have about 8% chance of drawing first hunt.

ya i see the elk odds, deer arent much better, saving points for deer, i'm along ways off for elk with 2 pts just hoping to see something from the unit but i believe im striking out. thanks

The largest deer we saw were on the ranches just outside of Nucla. Saw some whoppers, but they were all on private property that was leased to the outfitters we hunted elk with.

These are from 2005..

I'm not going to get specific about where we were hunting, but it was warm and dry..Lots of bucks in the aspens, but very hard to get the big ones up there..We shot these near the end of the hunt..Fun area, but can be frustrating if you aren't willing to work hard for them..Steep and thick country.Do a lot of hiking and hope for weather and you should be fine.

thanks ridgwalker, and no specific's nesc. i have my honey hole tucked away too but just needed somethin to get the blood boilin, and boy did those pics do it!!! thaks

ya some good one's there, my nephew drew 61 last year and if i can figure out how to post the pics, i will as for me hope someday i can get lucky.

Yes..public land for sure..We scouted for three days and hunted the first four days of the season up high, then dropped down a couple thousand feet and hiked a lot and got into them..Both those bucks were shot in the same canyon within hours of each other..Shot the tall one the fifth night, then hiked back in before first light the next morning to find me a buck and pack out the rest of my buddy's meat and I shot the wider buck. We saw a couple in the same class up in the aspens, but couldn't get a shot..Also saw a MONSTER up there..wide, tall, and HUGE backs..same deal though..it was too thick to get a shot.

PS It can be a fun hunt, but I think MOST(that don't like to hike more than a mile from the road)people would get frustrated with it. The hiking can be tough and it is very thick. It's no secret that 61 holds big bucks, but shooting one is another story. It's the same as any quality unit.. Takes HARD work and a little luck. Hope to get back there someday

Ridge, those are some great bucks. I was wondering if that was 3rd season? I have been saving my points for the unit but was trying to decide on 3rd or 4th. Last time I drew Colorado we did our time hiking but I came home empty handed. I don't want to mess up again.

It was 3rd season..I would think that 4th season could be unreal with a little weather..Last year was unusually warm and dry, but on a normal year they would have moved off the top and the rut would be going strong during the 4th..Takes a ton of points though
