LAST EDITED ON Feb-19-09 AT 08:13AM (MST)[p]Me and some buddies have 3 deer points in Colorado and we are looking to hunt this year. Obviously, we won't be able to draw a late season premium tag but we want to hunt now. We are hoping to draw in an area that holds some good deer with a chance at something very good if you work your tail off. We are comfortable with rifle, archery or muzzleloaoder.

Initially, we were leaning towards Unit 55 second rifle season but I am concerned about the winter kill last winter. I have also considered Unit 67 second rifle season and Unit 21 muzzleloader. I would greatly appreciate any help that you can provide and I am willing to swap information concerning Utah units, including the Paunsaugunt (which I have personally hunted twice).

Thanks in advance for the help and feel free to PM me.

I don't think you can draw any tag in 21 with 3 points, and you are several years away from a ml tag.

I heard the whole basin got hit hard with winter kill. You best bet is to call the local biologist and talk to him. Good luck.

My wife had a late season Unit 55 tag last year. After scouting the unit, we actually turned in the tag and did not hunt. Winter kill the previous year was 80-90%. Yes we did see a few deer, but nothing worth getting excited about. The die-off in the basin was extreme. I haven't heard about this winter yet (too early to tell, I'm sure), but it will be a long time before it rebounds from last year.

We're actually having a mild winter so the deer and elk should fare well. One thing to keep in mind with 55 is that it's an open elk unit, so you'll have a lot of company. 4th season deer tags are gone for 2009, which I think says a lot about the die-off from last winter.
