I applied for region H for my second choice, What do you think of the hunting opportunity for big bucks is in that zone?
Thanks, Doug.

For the regular tag, you probabbly don't have a chance of drawing. Maybe for the special tag, but unlikely as a 2nd choice. There is a chance for big bucks, but there are a lot of people crammed into the non-wilderness areas.

Tough hunt on foot IMO.
Now on Horseback you can get back in a ways and your odds go up. Your best bet is to hunt close to the wilderness area you will run into less hunters if it 8-10 miles back in.
I would find a couple of other guys to hunt with back in that far it some of the steepest and nasty country as you can find But it sure is pretty.

Buddy and I hunted it for 15 hunting days one season. We did not get anything. Preseason saw some good bucks but during the season they were tough to find. The Gros Vaunt has wolves now and there are supposed to be a few in the Greys now.

It is steep and rough but not quite like the Wasatch in Utah or the Rubies in Nevada.

We saw a wolf up there last year.

Thanks guys, I hunted region G last year with two points. Didn't kill a buck, but had a great time. Saw three busters, but just coudn't ketch um. My buddys and I figured we would put in for G again, H second, not really expecting to get drawn. But with the hard times, who knows? Last year was my first time with a tag in wyoming, I wasn't disapointed, saw 17 bucks in 5 days, with 3 dandys. Two of the guys in my group killed a couple of four points. I asked about H because we've never hunted there before. I'll be back on here asking more info in July, if we're lucky enough to get drawn. Thanks, Doug.

I drew region H last year as my second choice although I did pay for the money tag. I Scouted the Snake River Range mostly in the preseason. I packed in on horseback between 6 and 8 miles, I went on three different scouting trips but the best buck me and my partner could come up with was a measly 24 inch 4 point. The deer numbers werent what I thought they should be, don't know if the winter was extra bad on those deer or if they just werent in there to start with. After hunting it for the opening 3 days we decided to make our way to the Hoback.....I packed in there 3 different times and had about the same luck! I think maybe one of the keys to hunting H is to have a nonresident buddy so you can hunt the Wilderness areas in the Gros Ventre......there is soooooo much country there! Hopefully that helps, Personally I would rather hunt G because I know it better and there isn't anywhere I can't go, even if it meant not hunting wyoming one year!

Thanks for the info. Sounds like the hunting will be tough. I figured it would be like that, espeacialy beings I've never hunted there before. But what the heck, if we get drawn, we'll have a grand old time. There is nothing better than being in the mountains in the fall.
Thanks, Doug.

The "hunting opportunities" for big bucks in Region H is excellent. Not one behind every tree or as good as it has been but still excellent and as pretty as it gets IMO.

More than likely, if you hunt it hard for three seasons you will probably end up with one great deer. Probably on the last hour of the third year or the first hour of year one. You just never know about big bucks. One thing for sure is that there are more of them around than what you will see, but most of them see you.

Here's a pic of a Region H buck from a few years ago

I swear i know right exactly where that is but... probably not. Heck of a buck you got there Xtech!! That's a shooter anywhere!

Now we're talking! Great pic, now all we have to do is draw a tag. Thanks guys, see you this fall, if I'm lucky, Doug.

I saw less deer in region H than ever before. Only three half-decent bucks in one week. My wife and I saw a light one and after she went back to Utah I saw two more grey ones. Not sure if wolves are the problem or the bad winter.
