LAST EDITED ON Apr-13-09 AT 03:15PM (MST)[p]Those of you familiar with Nevada hunting units, know that unit 015 and 014 are side by side in N. Washoe county near Gerlach. Unit 015 connects to CA where lions are completely protected and over populated. This is a link to the Wildlife services web page and the latest monthly newsletter.
Check out the differences last season between the two hunting units (page 5). Unit 015 was a great late season hunt but has deteriorated terribly. Compare the stats between the two units. One with predator control and one with none.
22 lions have been removed from 014, that's a lot! Plus coyotes.

I personally found a dead fawn and dead 3 point velvet buck (both lion kills) on one scouting trip to unit 015 several summers ago.
I am a firm believer that "predator card" trumps the "habitat card". We can't have good deer populations without good habitat, but we can have good habitat and low deer numbers if there are too many predators.
A deer is to a lion what bitterbrush is to a deer,, tasty food. :) If deer can over graze their habitat, so can lions.

I am glad to see that NDOW is doing something to control predators. It seems to me that they would do it in 0-15 also. But at least they're doing something.Good ol California is just sitting back and letting the predators kill all the deer, bighorn sheep and antelope. We even spend somewhere in the neighborhood of $20 million a year purchasing habitat etc.to make sure the lions thrive. What a joke!

A friend of mine found a lion kill in 015 a few years back. A real shame, he's not a wide buck but an 8x7 with double eye guards. I'm sure he was an old wanderer.

NV does have their chit together if you ask me though. Used to live there but I'm in Cali now. If I were to give NDOW and CA DFG an overall grade I would say NV is an A- and CA is a D+.
Hopefully the lions here continue to threaten the Sierra bighorns because that seems to be the only form of kitty management.

ALL the counties In NV and Ore. that border up to Calif should have a open Moutain lion season that would be a start.

They already do, Year round season, 2tags over the counter per hunter for the last few years.
How many lions have you killed in there??

Maybe when a few more of them tree huggin mountain joggers get eaten in Kali they'll start using that round thang atop their shoulders!
