Holy smoly, I drew the combo deer w/ no points. I was intending to build points for future years when I actually knew something about Montana. So...any help would be appreciated (no need to tell me I'm stupid for applying with little knowledge, I already know that.)

I like to hunt brushy thick stuff if that is where the big bucks are.

I want to hunt an area with potential for 180-200" buck (I don't mean I have to see one, I know that's a pipe dream) as I'd rather eat the tag than shoot a 170" class buck.

I live 80 miles from region 3 but it seems the biggest MT bucks come from 1.

I'll apply for a special permit somewhere in May, but I better count on hunting a general unit.

and of course if you want to trade info for hunting Southern Idaho I could help you.

Thanks to all who are willing to help.

Christian, I to burst your bubble but MT is probably not the best state to hunt for 180-200 inch muleys unless you can draw a l/e unit or want to open your wallet.[can you say private land] I have hunted MT since 1979, when ever I have been lucky to draw.P.M.
me and I will share what I know.

I grew up in Montana and have two muleys that that are decent. One is around the 180 and the other is over 200. But I mostly hunt whitetail more often. They were even taken on public land. But I wouldnt hunt Montana for muleys either.

If you want to eat tag soup over a 170 buck then warm up the crock pot. I've hunted here for 3 years and I'm still lookin for a 170 inch buck. I was happy with my 150 class from last year. Montana has that general season through the rut and it just makes it tough for lots of public land bucks to get much past thier 3rd year. I know where some guarenteed 4-points are but thats about it.
