LAST EDITED ON Apr-20-09 AT 11:36AM (MST)[p]In your own opinions what is the best caliber and bullet weight for Mule Deer. I love my 7mm and have never had any reason to change.

50 BMG

Or 300 RUM

My favorite Deer rifle is 257 Wby with 115 gr Barnes

It's either 270WSM or 300RUM. I think there are a couple of people on MM who have strong opinions about them.

Hope this helps,

257 Weatherby Mag. 100 Grain Ballistic Tip on top of 68 grains of IMR 4831, Chrony at 3650 fps. Fast, Flat, one shot kills every time for me. My fav!!

My two favorites for long range muley action would be the .257 wby mag and the 7MM RUM.

For deer, over the past 30+ years, I went from a .30 carbine to a 30-06, to a 25-06, to a 7mm RM. My latest toy is a 300 WSM; but for deer, I plan to stay with the 7mm RM.

I shoot a .280 with 150 grain nosler partitions and love it. But with any of the cartridges mentioned above, I don't think the deer would know the difference.

Have always shot my Ruger .270 and never have had a problem with deer or elk. i think a .300 is better if your shooting long distances and i usually shoot 130 grain Winchesters at deer and 150 at elk just my $.02

LAST EDITED ON Apr-20-09 AT 05:29PM (MST)[p]Caliber or cartridge?

Anything in either a 6.5 or 7mm offers bullets with superior bc's, that offer great long range performance.

You answered your own question. There IS NO REASON to change.

That said, there certainly is no "best" either.

I personally use a 270 with a 140 grain hornady light magnum.

If I were going to use my 7mm mag, I would use a 150 grain.

But that is just my belly button.

There is no "best" cartridge for mule deer IMO.

There's lots of great rounds available. That said, I think i'm shooting two of the better ones for what i do and where i hunt, a 270WSM and a 280 Ackley Imp. Both dandies!

I really like my wifes 243. I have killed a couple of wall hangers with it the last few years.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-21-09 AT 07:47AM (MST)[p]7mm rm shooting Hornady 139's for me. How about a .17 weatherby mag...??

LAST EDITED ON Apr-21-09 AT 09:52AM (MST)[p]I have killed mule deer with, 222 Rem, 25/35, 243 Win, 280 Rem, 30/30 Win, 7mm Rem Mag, 308 Win, and 340 Wby. They were all actually dead so yeah, use a weapon!

No crap you need to use a weapon! I just wanted to hear some opinions that is all. It drives me nuts some people have to be smart a$$es when a simple question is asked!

LAST EDITED ON Apr-21-09 AT 03:14PM (MST)[p].280 or .270, or .30/06, and .25/06. All will simply do the job and any variation of these will to.

What ever tickles your lil pickle is what you should use.

Mr Old Fashion here picks up ole reliable (30-06) year in and year out. ;)

Well another question you need to ask yourself is what country you do most of your hunting in. That might make a difference. Also do you want a lightweight gun or does that matter. I think every caliber mentioned here will do the job. Is money a factor? It just depends on what makes most sense to you. Will it be a deer gun or a deer/elk gun or a deer/antelope gun? There are so many variables to consider. Some guys like to buy different guns to suit each species and terrain, some guys want a good all around hunting rifle. Do you live in a very wet climate? IMO the 7mm rem mag will do it all and perform the best but .270 wsm is right there so is a .300 wsm or rem mag. To me a .300 rum is a little overkill but some guys want that extra punch. To each his own. Sit down figure all that stuff out and buy the gun that suits you. Or buy every caliber you can get your hands on and have LOTS of fun. Everybody should own as many guns as possible!!!! IMO

In my experience, its usually not the gun in front of the person, but the person behind the gun that makes the difference.

.280 and .270 Weatherby Magnum are my two favorites that have gotten the job done. Qwn the .280 in Remington Mountain Rifle and .270 Weatherby in Weatherby Ultralite. Both rock.

I have had great success with my Browning 7MM. I shoot 140 grain Nosler Partition. I have never lost an animal.

I think I can speak for a few. Shoot one gun and shoot it at everything.

Weatherby Mark V 30-378 Topped with a Swaro 6-18 Scope (113g Retumbo and 165 Noslar Accubond 3.805 COAL) Chrono 3605fps. Long Range missile comin attcha!

A cooter is another name for a womans cha chi. I love how everyone can get so wrapped up in a gun issue. I have two guns that I have killed everything I have ever shot with. 30.06 with factory remington 150 grain cor loks and the one I really prefer is my old 243 with 100 grain factory remington cor loks. Most all of the guns listed with do the job if the shot is placed well. It really is up to you. Hunt with what feels and shoots good for you. Jack O Conner says the 270 is the all time greatest deer rifle made.

35 posts and still no right answer. The best caliber for deer, and probably the best caliber ever developed, is the .264 Winchester Mag.

264 win mag is an incredible round but it's not as easy to find ammo for. One thing I can tell you a good friend of mine worked for P.O. Ackley for a while and the 264 was his favorite. One that he didn't see the need to improve.

As stated, what you shoot the most accurately and with the most confidence. I pretty much just use the 06 for deer, elk, or antelope. Same gun, same round. That being said, I've a .243 and a couple of .270s I wouldn't be afraid to use either.

30-30 has most likely killed the most mulies, followed by the 30-06, no reason to change what has worked for a century or better. Of course you could always pack some custom magnum launching bullets that cost $3-4 a piece that was written about in some magazine and is the newest and coolest, or you could just kill deer. But if everyone thought this way who would buy the cough suppresor or my new favorite the treestand urinal(sportsmans guide). You must realize that the only true big game hunter MUST use a gun that costs more than an ATV, because we all know if you own the newest and best gun it will more than make up for your lack of skill as a hunter, your grandpa, with his 30-30 or 30-40 or any of the war surplus .30 calibers was no where near the hunter we are with our custom guns, unless dozens of pictures of dead monster mulies proves different.

I feel it's a broad head at 38 yards in the sage brush! Doesn't get any better! Unless of coarse its smoke flying out of a muzzle loader at 52 yards at a 200+ incher in the sage brush. I guess if you have to hunt with a rifle, my pick would be a 257 weatherby.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-27-09 AT 06:24PM (MST)[p]CRC sorry you cannot handle an answer that is as valid as your question. P.S. you did not ask a "simple" question.

.257 Roberts is the best caliber for mule deer with 120 grain nosler partitions. My dad's cronies can't be wrong.
