"Medusa" Buck

Here is the 4 main beam buck now. I nicknamed "Medusa" after I took these pictures. He is a Northern CA. Blacktail. He appears to be fairly young, I'm guessing 3 years old. In the last couple weeks he started getting even more abnormal points. It's hard to see, but he has at least 3 points per side now and look like many more on the way. I have my camera with me all the time, so hopefully I'll be able to watch and keep taking pictures of him to post. Very rare for a Blacktail!

Thanks, Mike

Here is the first time a saw him acouple weeks ago.

Mike Great pics!! Cant wait to watch him grow! Looks to me he will end up about 18-20 wide. What do you think?

From that last picture he Looks like a high fence buck, LOL Hope you're able to keep tabs on him as he grows it will be cool to see how he turns out.

That is one cool buck. And either you are really sneaky or he is pretty gentle. Great close-up pictures. Thanks for sharing and keep them coming.

Yes, I think he is starting to understand I'm not a threat. He will let me get within 100 yards now. He is in a consistant pattern now. I can find him at least once a week. As long as a mountain lion doesn't get him we will be able to watch keep growing. I'll have to post some of my trail cam lion pictures of this same area.

This will be the coolest thread of the year if you can stay with him. Nothing like a weekly update on his growth.

Thanks

Is this a deer in an area you can hunt this year? dont get too attached to him, you might not be able to pull the trigger! lol if you struggle, just call me and i can help.

Thanks Guys, I'll keep them coming as long as he keeps letting me. This buck just showed up this year. He must have came into the area during last years rut and decided to stay. This is the first nontypical buck I have seen in this area, so I hope he stays. Soon after these bucks get into hard horn they change their pattern. Most of the bucks in this area live until 5 1/2-7 1/2 years before they get killed by a lion after the rut. That being said, I would like to see him get a couple more years older and really see what turns into. You know how that goes, he could vanish tomorrow.

Thanks, Mike

"Soon after these bucks get into hard horn they change their pattern."

That is the truth! I can't tell you how many times I've seen good blacktails in the velvet only to have them disappear when they get hard horned. Just when you think they must have died, poof! About Thanksgiving (after the season, of course) they magically reappear! It's enough to make you pull your hair out!:)

Eel

Eel you are so right! But its seeing them in velvet year after year that keeps us going after them. I have said this before ai think a mature blacktail is one of the most stealth and sneaky game animals around! They are like Ghosts in the fog!

Mike, If you dont mind me asking...is that buck on the west side of the B&C boundary? Not that it really matters. If you'd rather not say, no problem. Keep the pics coming. Thanks, Rick

Hey Guys, I just found him again. I was getting a little worried. He has not been with the buck he was with all spring. Now, he is with a big typical 4x4. I'll need to get a picture of him too.

Thanks, Mike

By the way this area is in northern "A Zone", pure Blacktail.

Madmax maybe if we ask with a "pretty please" we can go shed hunt those bones next winter. Mr. B keep them coming. I just love all the extras. It doesn't look like he is going to be very wide but what an awesome buck. Thanks for posting.

Do you think those browtines are going to fork off? Do you think the buck is in his prime? Shooter for sure!

Good work MrB. It almost looks like a double rack. I sure hope he continues to co-operate. This is fun!

Eel

Mike I sure do enjoy seeing the updates every week. Looks like he is sure putting some mass to the outside beams. Hopefully he stays around when he turns hard horned. I would say he is not even past his prime. Looks to be maybe 4yrs. Keep up the AWESOME pics.

nice job finding him---looks like a heavy fork on the outside and more interest comming on his "inside rack" thanks-can hardly wait to see him again!

Mike, It's been over a week again. Don't let us down. Post some horn porn..please.

"Medusa" with "Booner"

Hey Guys, I finally found him and his buddy again, but this morning they also had a doe with them. His browtine forked now! This typical may end up a book Blacktail!
It's cool how the biggest bucks sometimes will find each other to hang out with during the summer.

Thanks, Mike

RE: "Medusa" with "Booner"

Wow, that typical is also an amazing blacktail. Thanks for keeping us posted. This is the best thread ever!

RE: "Medusa" with "Booner"

Wow! He has for sure put some inches on this week mike! That typical looks awesome also. Hopefully he stays around when he turns hard horned.

RE: "Medusa" with "Booner"

Feed that nontypical some "juice". Thanks. How many points? I think I see 6x7??

RE: "Medusa" with "Booner"

I saw a buck like him 5 years ago up around Fort Jone...well 20 min drive of it....Crossing the road with two other dandy bucks (at early light) then again a month later in a orchard! I was on my way to scout Elk!

+1 - This is great watching this buck grow in to his antlers. I hope he is somewhere that he can really grow and pass along his genetics. Very cool looking buck and I would really like to see him when he's hard horned. Keep the photos coming Mike.

Jim

Fantastic buck. Thanks for sharing.

Wow - he is shaping up quite nicely! Like he has a small frame growing inside of a larger frame. Cool buck!

Wow Mike!! He is really starting to put some mass on. I was thinking by the first week of august he will be hard horned. Cant wait to see him then.

Did you get pictures of the big 4x4? How many points does the non-typical have? Keep it up.

MrB, what an incredible buck and thread. Its amazing to witness the progression of such a unique buck. Thanks for all your time!

Mike,
Really enjoying this thread! Thanks for taking the time to do it and I sure hope you can stay on him, I am looking forward to the final pics of him on your wall!

I kept seeing the tile to this thread but for some reason never peaked in. So glad I did now, and will be following from now on. Thank you for your time in posting these up!

Thanks Guys, he is was by himself again when I found him.
I did see the big 4x4 he was traveling with the last couple weeks, but did not get any pictures of him thinking "Medusa" would pop-out. I'll get a picutre of him next time I find him.

Thanks again, Mike

this is the sweetest thread on here. i love it man.
the pictures are awesome. nice buck.

Awesome thread. But i think his name should be Meduso. Medusa is a chicks name ;)

Keep them coming! Love this post!

Great pics. mike, those both are dandys, if your letting the freak of nature walk,...is your dads name on the big 4x4? can't wait to see the hard horn pics. of both, keep'em coming!
mike

Found him, but this time him and his typical buddy were very nervous about something and were in a big hurry to get back to the bedding area. Sorry I could not get him to give me a front picture. I'm thinking they both will score!

Thanks, Mike

Mike Great pics! The typical is looking really good! Both bucks are putting on some mass now! Hopefully they stick around when the velvets gone!

Great photos ! The typical is going to be a monster ! Good job on finding and staying with these guys. Both are super bucks !

Moose

I just came in from a half hour session of archery practice. I believe I'll go back out for another half hour.:)

Eel

C'mon MrB, its been three days and no update. Can't you just coyote out with him and send us daily shots from your phone.
Can't wait to see either of them in August.

Hey Guys, got some good shots of him this morning. Even though it hasn't been a week yet I had to post them. He continues to put length on his points. From a distance he almost looks like a typical forked horn.

Thanks, Mike

That is a really cool buck. I'd shoot him over the typical any day. He's got some real unique character. Thasks so much for staying with him.

Cahunter805, actually he wasn't. He was with the old forked horn he was with in the very first picture of this post. It's odd how different bucks hang out with him each week.

I am keeping an eye open for the big typical, but didn't see him today.

Thanks, Mike

Sounds good mike! How is that old forky shaping up? Any pics of him? He looks to have some good mass in the old pics!!

Andy

Where's Medusa it has been a week now. I am really excited to see him all grown up. Thanks for all the time and energy to keep us informed. Great Pictures

Hey Guys, I found them all together this week!
All the points seem to finished growing now. They should be removing the velvet in the next couple weeks.

Thanks, Mike

Mike Those are some of the most amazing blacktail pics Ive ever seen! That big old forky looks to maybe just barely be a 3 huh? Thanks for all the photos n I sure hope you can find them again when they turn hard horned!

Glad you caught up with them again Mike. Great photos and I hope we get to see more in the future. Thanks for taking the time to keep after them, this has turned in to a great post.

Jim

Nice thread
I would shoot the NT first I just like his look better but I wouldn't pass up the Typical if he stepped out first.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

Just plain awesome! I've got to say that I'm a little disappointed in the 4 point. I was thinking that he had a chance to be a real smoker. I know, its an A zone buck and he is a smoker. I guess I'd take the nontypical, but then, I might let him go another year and see how he developes. Thanks Mike and give us another update next week.

This is one of the coolest posts I've seen. Keep postin pics if he keeps letting you take em.

Thanks for the photos.

Is that ethical?

I think I would shoot the fork and leave the other two for next year. I like to get rid of those big forkys. Things have been a little skimpy around our ranch this year, as the cats have the deer jungled up. Had a cat kill a doe right at the cabin

Any new pics in the last 3 weeks? He should definately be hard horned by this date. Please post.
