San Juan Elk Ridge

It's confirmed. I have a San Juan Elk Ridge Any Weapon tag. I would like any information any of you are willing to give. My dad had the tag five years ago so we have some knowledge of the area. I also plan on spending a lot of time down there this summer. I want to see some of your pics of the success you have had down there. Thanks.

lone pine i sent you a message. That tag is a sweet tag and Im jealous of both you guys. Good Luck!

San Juan is some of the most diverse and fun country to hunt deer in, offering every different type of hunting one could experience. With that said, the deer have suffered with the proliferation of the elk. One of the top 3 elk units in the state for sure. That's what it is managed for right now. If you look in "the book", back in the early to mid 90s, alot of book bucks came out of that area. San juan competed against the paunsegaunt for top deer untit. Now both units are wishing they were the Henries. You're about 15 to 20 years too late from the "glory days", however the potential is and always will be there to run into an absolute hawg down there-just not as many. Strong genetics and good winter range definitely help, but elk and cats don't. You're in for a great adventure with the real possibility of scoring big! The area is massive, so plan on spending the summer finding them. The black's can help if you're thinking of hiring a guide. Two places you could start, but are popular, would be the pea vine, or kigilia. The dark canyon wilderness would be great if you're going to go "backcountry." Good luck!

Thanks Mathewsman, having never been there, a place to start will help. After 12 years of applying, I'm really looking forward to hunting in that scenic country. When I first started applying, the San Juan Elk Ridge was a classified as a "premium" unit for deer. Too bad it lost that status.

12 nr points burned! wow!
hope its worth it!

I'm sorry mathewsman and buckmaster but i totally disagree with you. While the SJ isn't want it one was--meaning you could drive the roads and kill a 180+ buck--its still one of the top units in the state. Plus now that they have moved the season back to the 3rd week in October--there is no reason a guy couldn't kill a 180+ buck given the time and a bit of hard work.

Its a great tag to have in your pocket, personally, knowing what i know, I would only trade it for a Henry's tag in Utah.

YA!!!

15-20 YEARS AGO!!!

BEEN A FEW BIG BOYS BACK AS OF RECENT!!!

UP UNTIL THE LAST COUPLE YEARS THERES BEEN ALOT OF PISSCUTTERS!!!

THERE IS ANOTHER ADVANTAGE OF S.J. BUCKS!!!

THEY'VE GOT PISSCUTTER SIZED BODIES FOR THE MOST PART!!!

NICE FOR DRAGGIN THOUGH!!!

SO BLANDING BOY???

CAN YOU SPLAIN THAT TO ME???

LOTS OF FEED!!!

EASIER WINTERS!!!

MORE THAN AVERAGE AGE!!!

WHERE THE HELL IS THE BODY SIZE WENT???

ONE MORE THING FOR YOU PERMIT HOLDERS!!!

WHEN YOU DO GET A BUCK,MAKE SURE SOMEBODY CAN CHECK YOU FOR TICKS!!!

THEM ARE THE TICK INFESTED SOB'S I'VE EVER SEEN!!!

So we do agree that it isn't what it once was. That's all
i'm suggesting which can be backed up if you look at the facts like b&c entries and harvest stats. Road hunting is weak no matter what unit you're on, so that arguement doesn't hold water. Then again we're talking about your "backyard," so you obviously know it better than me & probably better than anyone on this website and I can understand your sentiment. I don't think my observations are too far off....to each his own. I'm standing by my opinion that there are and always will be some absolute monsters on San Juan-just harder and more work like you said...and that's not a bad thing. The kill is the end of the adventure

ANY INFO/ANSWERS BLANDING_BOY???

bobcat I got a few ideas as to why.....

more coyotes

My guess is those are just the deer you shoot, as i have not noticed that in the ones we do:)

Seriously, I guess I haven't really paid that much attention to it. The 4.5+ year old deer we shoot seem to me to be close as any other in weight. If they are lighter it is likely due to being limited on grocerys which in our case has to do with having a good acorn crop or not in a given year which is greatly influenced by winter/spring moisture and not having a killer frost in May.

HEY Travis!!!

I'LL AGREE WITH YOU ON THAT!!!

I'VE SEEN IT HAPPEN MANY TIMES & PLACES!!!

BRING THE ELK IN & THE DEER HERD FALLS OFF DRASTICALLY!!!

ARE YOU SAYING THE ELK ARE TAKING THE DEER HERDS FEED AND HENCE SMALLER BODIED DEER???

AND TODD!!!

I AIN'T BUYIN IT!!!

WE HAVE DEER UP HERE THAT WOULD MAKE DOUBLE THE BODY SIZE COMPARED TO THEM PISSCUTTER SIZED DEER YOU GUYS HAVE!!!

PROBLEM IS WE DON'T HAVE THE HEADGEAR!!!

SEEN SOME NICE BUCKS TAKEN ON ELK RIDGE MANY YEARS AGO,MOST OF THEM WERE PISSCUTTERS ON THE BODY SIZE THOUGH!!!

LIKE I SAID,MAKES FOR EASY DRAGGIN!!!

WAIT A MINUTE,THEY DON'T DRAG DEER ON ELK RIDGE,THEY SHOOT THEM OUT THE TRUCK WINDOW JUST LIKE THEY DO IN THE BOOK CLIFFS!!!

NEVER SEEN TWO PLACES GET ROAD HUNTED FOR DEER ANYMORE THAN THEM TWO!!!

I'D STILL LIKE TO KNOW WHATS UP WITH THE BODY SIZE???

Elk causing low deer numbers? Come on that is a bunch of crap, just ask our fellows in the mule deer forum.
What is causing it is no habitat...which I do not buy.

Do you guys think there has been a significant change in the habitat on the San Juan?

WELL I USUALLY GET DOWN THERE A COUPLE TIMES EVERY FALL!!!

ALWAYS SEEMS TO BE MORE VEGETATION THERE THAN HERE!!!

I THINK PISS POOR MANAGEMENT/ROADKILLS/COYOTES & POACHING HAS THE BIGGEST EFFECT ON ANY DEER HERD ANYMORE!!!

THERES LOTS OF FACTORS,PEOPLE LIKE TO ARGUE WITH ME ALL THE TIME ABOUT ROADKILLS!!!

THEY SAY::: THERES ALWAYS BEEN ROADKILL!!!

I AGREE!!!

BUT NOT IN TODAYS NUMBERS!!!

WHERE DID THESE PISSCUTTER BODIES COME FROM???

188buck.jpg

A friend of mine (Mountain Monarch) killed this buck last year. We only hunted for three days but it was three of the funnest days in the woods I have ever had. One bit of advise dont let all the screaming elk get you side tracked. I got in bow range of 10-15 bulls over 360 to video and spent alot of time sidetracked on elk. It was really easy to get distracted. Although thats how I stumbled into a honey hole holding two 190 class bucks. We tried getting a kill on video of a typ 190-195 buck and blew that one next day killed the one above in the same spot. high 170's frame w/ trash, a young buck. We were crunched on time and I would have loved to hunt longer, but it was memorable. Get off the roads, watch out for bears, and take a video camera. Oh ya kill a STUD while your at it.

The habitat is fine, but I think over-grazing doesn't help. Where I hunt down there (Blues not San Juan), 2 out of every 3 years, cattle graze the crap out of the place. Last year was a joke! I called the biologist & complained. She was nice enough to follow up and check on my suspitions and she agreed that this particular area had been way over-grazed, but what can she do when the ranchers are pumping big bucks into the forest service's bank account for their grazing permits. Unfortuneately nothing will likely change even though it hurts the wildlife. I'm no biologist, but those freaking cows are like lawn mowers. The whole damn mountain was a great big cow flop! 2 Years ago when they "rested" the mountain from the cows, the hunting was awesome! 2 out of 4 in my hunting party killed nice bucks, and we were in deer the whole trip. Even our scouting trips, we were seeing at least 6, 160 or better bucks. Those 2 bucks weighed 240 pounds each dressed out at the locker so I don't know what you're talking about bobcat on body size. Between the cows and elk eating all the best available forage, that leaves the deer with the scraps.

I'M GONNA CALL YOU ON THEM 2 BUCKS WEIGHING 240 POUNDS DRESSED OUT EACH!!!

I'D DON'T CALL PEOPLE OFTEN BUT 240 POUNDS DRESSED OUT???

AND BOTH THE EXACT SAME WEIGHT???

BE F'N LIEVE ME!!!

I'VE SEEN ENOUGH OF THE SAN JUAN BUCKS TO KNOW THAT ON AVERAGE THEY AIN'T REALLY THAT BIG ON AVERAGE!!!

THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS!!!

((( AND "F'N" STANDS FOR 'FRICKEN' BEFORE SOMEBODY GETS IN A HURRY TO TURN ME IN!!!)))

Bobcat,
I don't claim to be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I think I can read a digital scale, and yes you're right they didn't both weigh 240. One weighed 240 on the button, and the other weighed 236. The only thing they were missing was their guts. The butcher is the one that commented on how big bodied they were. I have a hard time guessing a weight, but I thought they looked mature bodied. Incidently the horns weren't lacking either. One was 28 and the 240 was 26-figure that! So yes, full of ticks they are, but lacking in body mass, sorry I'm callin you. Exceptions everywhere my friend. One last thing, keep your comments comin cause I really get a kick out of reading them-classic!

Thanks for the even bigger kick in b@lls! Everything is going to subsidized at the rate our economy is going! Thanks for sharing

LAST EDITED ON May-07-09 AT 09:49AM (MST)[p]bobcat- you're my new hero. To single handedly go to san juan and catch then weigh every deer on the mountain. WOW!!!

What i'm curious about is how you did it? Did you lay and wait on the popular trails and when the unsuspecting deer came by the ol cat pounced on it?

Or are you the worlds best roper? I can picture it now, galloping in the sunset with a lasso in one hand and the worlds biggest ego in the other. With a flick of the hand you've caught and tied an entire herd. . . . they never even had a chance!

Where do you find the time?

NeverStopHuntinForExcusesToMakePisscuuttersWeighMoreThanTheyReallyDo!!!

I NEVER CLAIMED THEY WERE ALL PISSCUTTERS!!!

ON AVERAGE & I HAVE SEEN MANY HARVESTED ON S.J. AND YES PERSONALLY THEY ARE SMALLER BODIED THAN THE DEER HERE WHERE I LIVE!!!

HUNTED COLORADO A FEW TIMES & ON AVERAGE THEM DEER ARE BIGGER BODIED THAN WHAT YOU'LL FIND ON S.J.!!!

I'VE SEEN SOME NICE HEAD GEAR ON S.J.!!!

MOST OF IT MANY YEARS AGO!!!

ALTHOUGH IT HAS BEEN COMMING BACK SOME!!!

NEVER CLAIMED TO HAVE WEIGHED THEM ALL!!!

BUT I WOULD BE WILLING TO COMPARE TIME/YEARS SPENT ON THAT MOUNTAIN RANGE COMPARED TO WHAT YOU'VE SPENT THERE???

IF YOU CAN'T SEE WHAT I'M SEEING YOU'D BETTER WAKE UP OR MOVE CAMP ONCE IN A WHILE!!!

I HAVE READ THE LATITUDE & LONGITUDE THEORY A FEW TIMES WHICH MIGHT BE PARTLY TRUE!!!

BUT FOR YOU PRO'S THAT KNOW EVERYFRICKENTHING I'D LIKE TO HAVE YOU SPLAIN SOMETHING TO ME,SEVERAL AREAS IN UTAH THAT USED TO HOLD HUGE BODIED MULE DEER,NOW THEM SAME AREAS ARE HOLDING NOTHING BUT PISSCUTTER SIZED BODIED DEER IN THE SAME AREAS,GO AHEAD,SPLAIN IT,I'M LISTENING!!!

I OFTEN WONDER HOW OLD SOME OF YOU ARE???

YOU'RE EITHER TO YOUNG TO KNOW OR TO ARROGANT TO LEARN!!!

USED TO BE BIG & NOW DINK SIZED KINDA SHOOTS PART OF THE LONGITUDE/LATITUDE THEORY DOWN NOW DON'T IT???

MIGHT BE MORE TRUTH TO THAT THEORY IF MOTHER NATURE HANDLED THINGS RATHER THAN THE DWR???

HAHAHA i can't believe you of all people said " FOR ALL YOU PRO'S THAT KNOW EVERYFRICKENTHING"

bobcat bess- the legend in his own mind, king of the know it all's got on here claiming to know that all deer on san juan are smaller then deer elsewhere then has the audacity to call out another guy who has killed some good bucks down there.

The irony of all this might just be a little too much for you to understand????

What really made me laugh are your original comments on this thread. Although i agree with you that san juan used to put out great bucks then went down hill and is slowly coming back, Why would you repeatedly ask Todd Black for an answer as to why you think the deer are smaller?

If you want to know about a good CWMU, Todd's your guy. If you want to know about the quality of animals that have been killed off san juan, Todd's your guy. If you want to know how many giant prarie dogs are tearing up the fields at blanding high school, Todds your guy. But he never claimed to be an expert on the body size of deer so why would you keep asking him????

I would love to sit here and point out more of you ludicrous statements but i need to go sight in my pellet gun for the upcoming san juan hunt.

By the way, how much did that world class buck you shot last year weigh?

P.S. I have spent A LOT more time on san juan then you think.

I'll give ya one thing, your overzealous rambling make me laugh!!!

As much as i'd like to publicly embarass you on the web i hate it when people hi jack threads and i'm sure that Lone_Pine would like to get some more info on the unit.

So why don't you PM or email me, i'd love to be enlightened by your infinite wisdom oh mighty one!!

Bobcat,
Just a couple of questions that maybe you could "splain" to me. Where did you get your perception of the "pisscutter" body size. Was it from deer you've killed, people you know killed, observing from the truck, what? To me, body mass is about 2 things; habitat and age. I think the habitat down there is comparable to any where in the state. I don't understand how antler growth, and body mass aren't proportionate to each other meaning a 2-4 year old will almost always be smaller (with rare excetion-see there's the disclaimer) than a 5 year old or older. Kind of like why am I bigger than my 5 year old son-cause I'm older, fatter, out-a-shaper, and balder. In the past 10 years or so, I've killed 4 deer down there and they all seemed proportionately sized for their age. I wonder if you're asking the question cause you really want to know based on your observations, or are you trying to stir the pot in spectacular bobcat fassion?

Lone Pine,
Have a great hunt-I know you will. If nothing else, the country is awesome! I drive 7 hours from my house to the top of the mountain where I hunt, even last year when diesel was 5 bucks a gallon. Why? Because the country is that awesome! Good luck and I'm looking forward to you posting us some pictures of your 230 inch, 300 pound monster so bobcat can eat a good helping of crow. I'm callin out all you monticello and blanding MMers to help out Lone Pine get his monster so we all can stick it to bobcat....ok b-cat I'm just funnin with ya.

WELL mathewsman!!!

THATS THE PROBLEM WITH GETTIN OLD!!!

I GOT A FEW OF THE SAME CONDITIONS YOU HAVE,LOL!!!

EVIDENTALLY YOU NEVER WERE AROUND IN THE LATE 60'S UP UNTIL 72???

IN SOME OF THE MULE DEER MAGAZINES THEY POST THE "OLD DAYS" PICTURES!!!

TAKE A CLOSE LOOK AT SOME OF THEM BUCKS & TELL ME YOU'VE SEEN BODY SIZE LIKE THAT ANYWHERE IN THE LAST 25 YEARS!!!

LIKE I SAID ABOVE,THEM PISSCUTTER SIZED BUCKS ARE NICE FOR DRAGGIN!!!

I SPEND TIME ON S.J. JUST LIKE YYOU & EVERYBODY ELSE DOES!!!

I'VE SEEN MANY BUCKS TAKEN ON S.J.!!!

MANY FAMILY MEMBERS TAKE BUCKS ON S.J.!!!

YES I GLASS QUITE A BIT ON S.J.!!!

FOUND A FEW BUCKS KILLED BY LIONS ON S.J.!!!

HAVE NOTICED THE LOWER COUNTRY DEER SEEM TO BE BIGGER IN BODY SIZE ON S.J.!!!

YOU EVER COMPARED TRACK SIZE TO OTHER PLACES YOU HUNT???

I SEE IN THE FALL FAWN TRACKS THAT ARE A FEW MONTHS OLD THAT ARE SO FRICKEN TINY IN SIZE ITS A FRICKEN JOKE,BUT COYOTES DON'T MIND IT!!!

NOT SAYIN THEY'RE ALL SMALL BUT ONCE AGAIN I'M SAYING ON AVERAGE THEM DEER ARE BY FAR SMALLER THAN OTHER PLACES I HUNT!!!

FEED???

HABITAT???

EASIER WINTERS???

THEM DEER HAVE GOT IT WAY BETTER THAN WHERE I'M COMPARRING TO!!!

NO I HAVEN'T CHECKED EVERY DEER NSH!!!

YA WHEN YOU GUYS GET THEM DRESSED 300 POUNDERS PLEASE GIVE ME A CALL,I WANNA COMPARE MY SCALES TO YOUR SCALES!!!

SO TELL ME???

JUST HOW MANY FRICKEN BUCKS DO YOU THINK LIVE PAST AGE 5 IN THIS DAY & AGE???

BUCKS WILL LIVE EASILY 8-10 YEARS IF YOU LET EM!!!

VERY FEW BUCKS TAKEN IN UTAH A YEAR THAT WILL TOP 8+ YEARS IN AGE!!!

NO, I'M NO BIOLOGIST & FURTHER FRICKEN MORE I DON'T THINK YOU NEED TO BE ONE TO SEE THE LIGHT!!!

GOOD LUCK TO THE TAG HOLDERS!!!

HOPE YOU ALL TAKE GIANTS,THEY ARE ON THE COMEBACK A LITTLE!!!

Bobcat,

Your point is well taken and very valid. In the glorious deer huntin' days of the 60's, I was nothing more than a glint in my dad's eye. Everytime we go deer hunting year after year, all I hear is how awesome it was back in the day and to your point when looking at the old photos, those deer were huge bodied for sure, but look at the proportionately huge head gear they were wearing. I think a 10 year old san juan (or any unit) buck would be the same today as they were back in the day and as you said, there's just not many around anymore-anywhere! Hopefully lone pine can show us one in a few months.

mathewsman!!!

VERY TRUE!!!

BUT THINK ABOUT IT???

DO YOU THINK THE PEOPLE OR THE DWR WILL EVER LET THEM TO LIVE TO AGE 10 AGAIN???

I DIDN'T CHIME IN ON THIS THREAD TO STIRR IT!!!

I STATED THE TRUTH THAT I'VE SEEN WITH MY OWN EYES THAT HAS HAPPENED OVER THE YEARS IN MY LIFE & SOME PEOPLE CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!

BEST OF LUCK TO LONEPINE & OTHERS WITH TAGS!!!

HOPING WE SEE SOME PICS THIS FALL!!!

Hey MountainMonarch, glad to see you connected. You did a lot better than the pictures I sent. Cool.

Bobcat, it blows my mind to see deer standing in feed up to their bellies, lots of acorns and ribs sticking out in September down there. I don't know what is going on there. I thought they all had chronic wasting when I first went down there. Here's a fawn on the 15th of September. Have seen too many in this condition that late.

Here's one of bobcat's monters...not many ribs to BBQ.

Took a few pics last year on BirdBuster's elk hunt.

One BirdBuster took (hope you don't mind Brett). I didn't get pics of the big bucks because I was to busy wetting myself.

Sweet pictures hazmat. The fawn pic in sept. got me thinking. Do you think that could have been a 3rd estrus cycle (january) fawn? Or are the deer on san juan just magically smaller than everywhere else? (pun intended)

I don't know about 3rd estrus but there are definitely too many late fawns down there. But they have lots of winter range and the winters aren't nearly as harsh as other parts of the state. Cool country for sure.

Since I drew this permit this year, I'm interested in seeing some more Elk Ridge permit bucks. I have seen some nice bucks from there. Are there any more pics of bucks that past permit holders have taken in this unit? Thanks in advance.
