I hunted the Books last year for deer. Can say it was a realy fun time and yes I did see over 400 bucks during my scouting and hunting time. Only two that I would consider trophys, one of them on a guys quad, the other I tried to kill but farmed it. And the buck I killed at the end of my hunt is 28 inches wide, with a 4x4 frame decent mass but crawdaddy in the front. Overall a great time in Gods creation, but its only fair trophy potential in my opinion. Ive got a ton of pictures but Im a dummy at this computer thing, if somebody holds my hand I could probably post. One thing I noticed was a lot of hunters around but they did thin out after a few days. Later dates on the rifle tag and fewer permits would make it a better trophy hunt. Lots of other game spotted as well, 250 elk with 30 bulls up to 350 max with most 280 to 310 or so. Bears and antelope and even some chuckers and grouse. I spent 10 points to draw and would do it again! Good luck, BH1

You would be shocked to see all the 18 to 20 inch 3 and 4 pts killed the first 3 days. Plan on seeing a lot of them.

In all the time I have spent in San Juan I have only seen two real trophy bucks. A 26-28" buck is a really good deer for the San Juan anymore.

Lets hope next time they close down a unit they have a mangement hunt for the bucks with bad genes first. One of things you hear all the time about Books is you see alot of bucks but they are crab forked and 24" wide, Just think what the books would be like if they took some great genetics and put them in place before the five year shut down.

The Books are a great place to hunt i would say the stick and string has the best chance to pull a big monster buck my buddys dad shot a 200in last year with his bow and and another guy i was with was on 2 Bucks over 180 i think that there have been to many tags down there. after the season in the rut i only found 1 buck over 180 i have him on film he is around 35-40 in wide a true monster till u see his left side and it only has 3pts but a true monster deer. i am not sure if he came from 21 though lots of deer great time but i agree pulling 190 class deer is hard if you know the area and wheere they are at its great the rifle hunt is really dependendt on the weather they can be spread out from the devide to wolf den and big park an all theway over to buck canyon and kings well. so if you put in keep it mind if lots of people shoot bucks i would laugh at though down there the first nice buck they see hits the ground but there are some true giants down there if you know where to find them.
