LAST EDITED ON May-13-09 AT 12:31PM (MST)[p]So my buddy turned a guy in last year for killing to 3 deer on the general deer hunt, one was for him, another for a family member(party hunting) and the other wasn't even tagged. Now, this guy was confronted by the DWR and confessed to it all. So this years draw comes around and he is able to put in for the hunts and yep you guessed it draws a tag taking the opportunity away from someone else to get a tag! My buddy calls the DWR asking about the case and why he was able to draw a tag.. they say the courts are backed up so we are just waiting! What a joke, the guy has confessed yet they still allow him to get a tag! at least put the guy on probation or something so that he doesn't take a tag away from someone else who is actual a law abiding hunter.. thats the DWR at its finest if you ask me

I should also add, he was turned in last October, so it has been 7 months ago!

Thats really awesome!! Everyone wonders why our deer herds are so bad and this is why!! So basically what your saying is i can go kill 3 deer next year dont even bother tagging several of them, turn myself in and nothing will happen. This is why people party hunt and destroy our deer herds because no corrective action takes place!! This guy admitted to killing multiple deer not even tagging one and nothing happens lol wow! I dont care if they were big or small bucks he still stole from every single utah hunter and draw applicant! He should not be allowed to hunt at least this year for sure!

oh wow!!! just read the last part of your post. So this poacher was turned in 7 months ago, admitted to killing 3 deer, one of which was never tagged and nothing has happend in 7 months!! WHAT A FREAKING JOKE!!

Just so you know, it's our speedy judicial system at it's finest, not the DWR.

If you've ever been through the court system you'll understand what I mean.

deerbedead. I realize that maybe the courts are a little backed up, I have never been through the court system but a friend about 5 months ago was ticketed because he had a dog at large. he was told he would have to go to court, the whole thing was a done deal 3 weeks after he got the ticket.. thats pretty fast. I don't think it should take too long to sentance a person who has already confessed to poaching... Also even if the court is backed up, why can't the DWR put the guy on probation making it so he can't get a tag?(that is my beef with DWR on this situation) That just doesn't make sense to me, the guy poaches, admits to it, but still gets to hunt the next year! What is going to stop this guy from doing the same thing this year? He will think to himself, wow, I killed 3 deer last year and nothing has heppened to me, I might as well do it again...

LAST EDITED ON May-14-09 AT 09:51AM (MST)[p]Hunter- The UDWR has no authority to put someone on "probation". They are an enforcement agency. They are not the sentencing agent. Only the courts can pass judgement and sentencing. I think you can see the difference between a traffic ticket, a dog at large, or a poaching crime. The UDWR must build a case and then the offender can have a trial by his peers to see if the evidence against him stands. Even though the guy has confessed, the matter must still go through the court system. Until there is a judgement passed in court then the man innocent.

So your saying the DWR has no authority to reject a persons application on the grounds that the person is a poacher and that he has a pending case on which he confessed to poaching, instead they let him get a tag and keep hunting. They have authority to reject a persons application because one letter of a name or one number of an address is wrong(happened to me before), why can't they reject someone who has a pending poaching case? Messed up system if you ask me... Now maybe I am in the wrong for getting mad at the DWR but my heck this guy poached confessed and still gets the same hunting privilages as someone who goes by the law, that is just plain and simple messed up!

LAST EDITED ON May-14-09 AT 12:14PM (MST)[p]I agree with hunter03! If the man confessed to poaching he in no way shape or form should be able to hunt this year period!! I know for a fact that The dwr has the right to take someones deer tag in the field for a wildlife violation, so they obviously have the right to reject an applicant for poaching. The system is flawd, poaching will continue, party hunting will continue because no one seems to care! Unless its a 180-220 inch buck thats poached on the henrys, pauns,or books it gets put on the back burner. We as hunters are taking the hit for these types of crimes! All our scouting time, application fees, service hours, and tag fees are paying for this dumb ##### to hunt yet another year. While a dad of 3 doesnt draw a tag and his boys cant hunt deer this year. This guy will for sure commit this same crime again. This type of resolvment from the dwr does nothing but entice people to continue to hunt unethically. There is no excuse for him having a deer tag, he admitted guilt and should not be hunting period, no grey area on this one

this is a perfect example of what i have been talking about someone does something wrong and nothing happens no liscense until his court day is done anybody that is brought up on wildlife charges shoul have to wait to hunt until those chrages are taken care of nail. They need to nail his balls to the wall to!!!!!!!!!!!11

the wording needs changed from being convicted of a Wildlife crime to being charged with a wildlife crime to be able to apply for a tag.
This really sucks They should pull his tag until the case is settled.

It took 4 years for a guy I turned in with a confession and pictures off of my camera that they also kept 4 years. He mowed over a herd of 12 bucks and does in the bookcliffs. Killed 4 more bucks and 2 bulls while the government fought over who has jurisdiction in the exterior boundaries. The pictures were him leaning over the hood of his truck shooting. I was about 150 yards away in some cedars.
