WHATS THE BEST CALIBER FOR MULEDEER HUNTING ??? (THOUGHT THIS MIGHT LIVEN UP A SATURDAY MORN. & PISS OFF D13 er....YD).

LAST EDITED ON May-23-09 AT 03:22PM (MST)[p]I was thinking kinda more along the lines of Red Rider, just gotta hit them in the eye.

LAST EDITED ON May-23-09 AT 06:23PM (MST)[p] SPEAKING OF A .177 PELLET GUN.........I HAVE BEEN PUTTIN A BUTT WHUPIN ON THE LOCAL POPULATION OF CROWS AROUND MY HOUSE. YOU HIT ONE SOLID AND HE WILL FOLD PRONTO.....BUT THEY ARE SMART BIRDS FOR SURE......YD.

Man, If you can do it, a .22 mag hollow point whops the crap out them too. Just kidding!!!!

.338 Ultra Mag with a 210 grain scirocco.

I LIVE IN THE CITY......I GOTTA WATCH MY BACKSIDE.......WHACKED ANOTHER CROW TODAY......SHOT HIM FEEDING ON MULBERRIES AS I WAS HIDING BEHIND THE BBQ....THEY CAN REALLY SQUAWK WHEN YOU POP EM.............YD.

257 Roberts with 120 grain Nosler partitions. Light on recoil, flat trajectory, bad on the important end and comes in some interesting rifles.

257 Weatherby mag with 100 or 120 grain partitions.

Happy trails

375 Ultra mag, 300 grn bullet. Actually had a client show up with this as his desert muley gun!

.276 Pedersnen. If you're using anything else for mule deer, you're either uninformed or an idiot.:)

I think a very fast 26 cal. in a 140 gr. bullet would be pretty good as far as flat shooting and very hard hitting. 6.5 X 284 in an Encore did not prove to be it for me as the action will not handle extraction of the case over a medium loading. Maybe in a bolt gun ?

I just assumed the question was for competent individuals , within their range physically and marksmanship wise along with recoil tolerance .

I personally like the bowtech general with gt arrows tipped with 100 grain muzzys. Does great on elk and deer.

I'm with Ridge-Runner on this one. The 257 Weatherby is a flat shootin' sum-bee. If your recoil-shy you'll love this caliber. Just hold on hair out to 425 yards and squeeze the trigger.

20mm Howitzer, Eel does'nt know what hes talkin about :)

+1 264 Win Mag. I own two of them, 1 Pre64 Model 70, 1 Ruger M77. Both will drive nails and put down whatever I shoot them at!!!!

This question is usually asked by a guy starting out in the hunting world or looking to upgrade from an old hand me down type rifle that they're not comfortable with. There are LOTS of great mule deer cartridges on the market today that will do the job as long as the shooter does his. I believe 400 yds is a heck of a long shot and really don't need a gun that has the ability to kill at much further distance than that so i usually stay on the smaller side and because so, actually enjoy my practice time, and have become a better shot in the process.

My three fav's

25-06
270WSM
280 Ackley imp.

These three flat shooting cartridges, along with some great others mentioned, especially the 270 win, 264WM, and the 7MM rem mag, will completely pork up any muley buck that ever lived. :)

Also, for a advancing hunter that already has experience hunting and taking game yet is looking to get their own nice first rifle, i recommend a good quality straight 6x scope. It's powerful enough yet not so much that you can't take game at close range and you never need worry what power you are on or fidget with your scope while in the field. I can imagine how many hundreds if not thousands of bucks don't get shot every year because a guy was messing with his scope power ring instead of quickly getting a rest and squeezing one off.

Good post. I'd say the rifle with the least amount of recoil that still has enough energy to put a deer down. 25 06, 270, 243, 257 WB, and my personal favorite the 6.5x284. Anything that don't rattle your teeth. Another good one that will cover you for any north american big game would be a 300 wm and the 7mm.Ultra mags are over kill IMHO. I may take a thrashing for that, but oh well!

Joey,
How does the recoil on the 270WSM compare to the 270?
Looking to upgrade, maybe Rem 700 XCR or XHR.
Can't decide whether to stick to 270 or bigger poss for elk.

LAST EDITED ON May-29-09 AT 08:15PM (MST)[p]Ed, I don't mind admitting that i don't care for a lot of recoil. My 270WSM is a Winchester with synthetic stock and i know for a fact that my friends old 270 Win rem 700 kicks me much harder than mine does. This ain't saying much cause the same caliber will feel differently shooting out of different guns. I'll say this, i was very pleasantly surprised to find out how much my 270WSM backs up on me.

Edit, a guy can't have too many guns and not sure what you're looking at but thinking out loud here...if i already had a 270 Win and was thinking something bigger for Elk, id skip right past the 30 caliber stuff and go right to a .338 Win Mag. There you have a super fine Elk, or anything else, gun that isn't going to break your shoulder to shoot AND a .270 Win for deer, lopes and the smaller stuff. Now, you got lots of money? Get them all! :)

Best Caliber?

Whatever one you have that you can shoot copmfortably and hit waht your shooting at. I personally hate rifles that kick the crap out of you regardless of caliber and I figure no matter how good the ballistics if you can't hit what your aiming at because the rifle makes you flinch than you have the wrong caliber. I hunt with my old .270 and I have a .300 RUM that I tamed down the recoil but it sure is loud when it goes boom.

The question was what is the "best caliber," not the best cartridge. So why is everybody naming cartridges?

Bob D said; "The question was what is the "best caliber," not the best cartridge. So why is everybody naming cartridges?"

I believe most of us knew what Yukon Dall the crystal ball meant. If you said .30 caliber, that would include anything from a 30 carbine to a 300-378 Weatherby mag. A 30 carbine is a nice little people rifle at close quarters but in no way suitable for Muley hunting.

To some folks, caliber = cartridge. No it's not exactly correct but unless a person is completely anal retentive, it's not a big deal. :)

HEY JOEY........THATS WHAT I LIKE ABOUT YOU.......YOU NEVER LOSE YOUR TOUCH........YOU HAVE THE TOUCH OF A BLACKSMITH......LMAO.........YD.

What? You think i was a bit heavy handed there? I've been corrected myself a time or two. To me anyway, it's no big deal...

Besides, Bob asked his question like 2 hours ago...

I'm one of those guys that says, "don't ask if you don't want to know. :)

What are you shooting that 6.5 in, Cabinfever ? I tried it in an Encore and I am not impressed with it at all. I do agree it seems like it would be one heck of a round if I put it in a good bolt gun or a better single shot.

I personally like my .338WM for all big game, But I bought a .270 a few years back and I am going to give it a try this year on antelope and my mule deer tag......IMO it is a great gun for deer along with other big game species.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-03-09 AT 06:40PM (MST)[p]Really it doesn't matter what caliber you use, it's all about shot placement!

OK, so it seems you're actually looking for the best cartridge, not the best caliber, so in that case I will say the 30-06.

it all depends on where your hunting. some places are thick and rough in that case a 3030 or a lever gun that is quick to draw, other places are big open country and you need some range for this i use my 300wby. if your looking for a all around good gun you cant go wrong with a good old fasion 7MM (270wsm is the same thing) good luck and keep huntin. weatherbys rule

Might as well go with the better 7WSM;-)

I thought for sure this would be the "30-06 show" when I read the title...

My personal favorites are the .300 win mag or the 7mm. Gotta be in a remington 700 of course.

.270 WSM hand loaded with 130 grain Barnes triple shock bullets, and 62.5 grains of IMR 4350. 3170 fps, killer caliber.

I've taken deer with a .270, a 30-30, and with a 7 X 57, with a 7MM mag, with a .338 win mag, with a .503 cal ML and with a contender in .30 cal THE BEST ONE..... which ever one is in my hand when the buck steps out....
