Wyoming Mule deer choice for 2010???

I'll be hunting Wyoming next year for Mule deer for the first time. I'm looking to move to WY in the next few years, but in the meantime have to hunt as a Non Resident. I'm leaning towards the Carbon county area for moving to, but for the purposes of this hunt then entire state is open for me. I got in on the ground floor with the preference points, and will be hunting with a WY resident buddy next year.

My questions is simply, with max points where would you suggest I apply for a tag???

Thanks!
Keith

LAST EDITED ON Jul-05-09 AT 08:36AM (MST)[p]frogman it sounds like you have made your mind up on hunting next year. With max points pick an area that has a good chance of drawing. I would say upper odds as you have max points. Your odds are as good as any. Second pick a region as your second choice. Look at the draw odds and go from there. Good luck.

Thanks for your input...I'll keep that in mind between now and next year.

Thanks for your input as well Rackmaster.....however I don't always do "what everyone else" does. I have read about unit 102 and looked up the odds of the WY G&F site. Don't know that I would draw it as it's running around 6% draw currently.

The terrain on the topo maps doesn't look too bad in that area either, and access looks decent.

Time will tell.

Thanks again,
Keith

Once you become a resident those points won't do anything for you (unless they initiate a resident draw system with points). You will have one year from when you move to the state before you qualify for WY residency, so make sure you use them up before then. Good luck.

Oh, I plan on using them before I move. There's just something about a mature Mule deer buck that trips my trigger. What I'd really like to take is one with those beautiful dark mahogany colored antlers....have wanted one for years, however being a single parent there was always someplace else to spend the money than making trips out west to hunt Mule deer and Elk. I have a big 3x3 as my best to date so am looking forward to hitting the mountains this fall with my son for his first Elk hunt. No buck tag, but have a cow tag for Colorado, and he'll buy an OTC bull tag.

No matter what happens it will be great just to introduce my son the the beauty and wonder of hunting the Rocky mountains!
