Hello y'all,
I am interested in hunting Wyoming Mule deer area 128, located within region E, which i have been drawn for. Does anyone have any information they would like to share? Never been to this area. Looks like heavy forest based on the map. I have hunted several other areas in Wyoming and would be willing to share some secrets if anyone has any questions for me.

Thanks

Were you drawn for limited entry unit 128? Or, general season region E? Please clarify.

Unit 128 is a limited entry unit located within Region E.

You have to draw a tag for unit 128 which is one of most sought after tags for mule deer in Wyoming so unless you have drawn unit 128 you can not legally hunt in 128 for deer.

I have never noticed this area being included in the general region until I received my tags for general region E. According to my map and hunting dates, area 128 is available to hunt with a general tag for Oct 1st - Oct 22nd. My guess is that this area is best later in the year with the deer come down from the snowy mountains, which, you would need a limit quota tag to hunt the late season. Y'all check it out and get back with me. Want to make sure y'all are seeing the same thing I am.

Quote:Looks like your right. General license oct. 1 - 22. Does anyone know if this changed this year? I always thought there was only the late hunt.

Very interesting as I have been applying for the unit 128 tag for several years now for the late hunt....

Never heard of 128 having a general season before the limited entry late season.

I called the Wyoming Fish and Game and spoke to a agent at the Lander office which manages unit 128 and region E, they said there has been a general season in place so quite sometime now.

I never knew that only knew of the late season tag.

Good luck on your hunt this year.

Yeah, like I said, who know if it would be any good that early. We are planning on hunting area 97, but I may spend a day at 128. Do you know where would be a good spot for a day hunt? Is most of the area thick forest?

Thanks
Joe

Area 128 has been a general tag for sometime now however, the deer are usually in the back country needing deep snow or real cold weather to drive them down to lower elevations. I have hunted elk in this country and normaly you don't see many deer until later in the season.

That country is HUGE, and with seventy air miles from the end of the road to Cody, or east entrance into the park with no roads in between gives them big bucks plenty of country to hide in. Plus one more thought the wolves and grizz have pretty much hurt the hunting in that area.

Every few years the general hunt in 128 is better than the late hunt. Just depends on the weather. It's a good general unit and is way under rated when compared to the hunt a few weeks later.

Don't expect many big bucks, but I wouldn't expect many big bucks on the late hunt either.

We had the late tag in '07. Spent the last 9 days hunting hard and walking into "remote" areas. Not real impressed with the area, very overrated. We saw lots of elk, sheep and wolves chasing elk. Theres a few big bucks around but expect on seeing alot of 160" type deer, rutting with the does. Lots of atv's buzzing around the Res. road. It is a area you can expect to do alot of glassing. The area could produce bigger bucks but to many tags are given in the late hunt.....

The area has an early season general hunt which I'm sure is no different than any of the other high country units in Wyoming with a few big bucks sprinkled throughout the mountains. The late season hunt is the one that draws the attention. If I were to hunt high for deer I'd drive a little farther west.

I hunted the late season last year for 8 days with no success. I saw a bunch of runts and one deer I thought would go 170 but he had broken off his front forks on one side. I'm gonna go back this year and see if that buck survived another year. If he's alive and I can find him again I'll pop him. I was not impressed with the unit last year and I'm not sure why I put in for it again. I was told by a few that I would see lots of 170's. Either I had some bad luck or the scores were embellished a bit. Anyhow, I'll give this hunt the benefit of the doubt and try it one more time.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-09-09 AT 11:31AM (MST)[p]is there an early archery season for the general tag?

i just checked and there is a sept. archery season on the general tag.

You can archery hunt it the whole month of Sept, and there's some great areas for ambushing bucks around the fields and rivers. Probably a better hunt for a big whitetail.

It's a good area for a 140-160 buck. 170+ bucks are very rare-even on the late hunt. The late hunt pretty much wipes out the older bucks every year. There'll be a few big ones on private, but even the private has gone way down hill the last few years.

If you're after a true monster buck Wyoming is in pretty sad shape all around. Your best bet would still be to luck into one in G or H.

Yes, WY's general hunting and late rut hunts like 128 with too many tags have really cut the number of older ge bucks...Not many survive long enough to become superbucks. But there are still a few. And too many nagazines gice unrealistic expectatio expectations, casualy blowing off 180 bucks...and 160...nothing. Anyway, they take a few good ones most years on the late 128, still odds are you won't get one, but better odds than on ythe earlier hunt. Nost hunters are happy with a pretty 4x4, that's not unrealistic on either, and most l;ikely on the late one. I had the late one a few years ago, had fun (wind sucked), an took a buck that made me happy.
