LAST EDITED ON Jul-22-09 AT 01:09PM (MST)[p]Hey Guys, he rubbed off his velvet last night. He was in full velvet yesterday. When I found him this morning he was just finishing up with the last pieces on his way back to his bedding area. It's been a lot of fun chasing him around this spring and early summer. He'll for sure disappear in the next week or so. Hopefully after the rut he will come back and drop his antlers for me to find! Here's a look back at his progression. Hope you enjoy.

Thanks, Mike

Great job on this post! If you want to try the same thing on another buck, it would be awesome, too. Look forward to seeing more about the"Medusa buck!"

grab a archery tag for that unit and hope like all hell he still around for a week or two of the archery season.
Hope you seen him during the hunting season at least once with all the time you have put into seeing him this year.

Hey Guys, thanks for all the nice words!

As far as hunting him, tough call. I thought it would be easy to go after him, but as the weeks have gone by things have changed. I have had to work hard at befriending him and put him at ease with my presence (at least enough to let me take a few pictures). I have avoided eye contact and not crawling around to sneak up on him. Instead I have been talking to him every time I see him and walking normal to get him to this level of comfort. I'm sure he thinks "what a strange and clumsy creature", but he doesn't see me as the predator he should. I just feel it would taint this trophy animal to breach his trust at his point. He most defiantly would deserve a spot on my wall if harvested. Unfortunately every time I looked up at him I would feel a need to apologize for misleading him all those weeks. My plan at this point is to keep my fingers crossed he survives the rest of this year and comes back after the rut. If he does, I will cover every inch of this mountain looking for his sheds. When found he will then make it to my wall!

Don't get me wrong, I will kill a buck or two this year. It just won't be my "Buddy".

Who knows maybe we can do this same thing next year!

Thanks, Mike

That's awesome. If he survives he should be even better and heavier next year. I think he's fairly young. Good luck on finding the sheds.

Great pics mike! and thanks for all the follow ups! is the typ. 4x4 a buddy also? or is your dads name on that one....hehe

I know how you feel, Mike. When you spend so much time with a specific buck he becomes more valuable alive than dead. Most bucks we see in the feild are fairly "anonymous" to us... the prospect of hunting changes for me when I have a good chance of a continued relationship with the buck.

I hope that you find those sheds... they'll likely mean more to you than anyone else!

On your way up the mountain, don't forget to look back and enjoy the view.

I am glad you feel that way Mike.. This has been a really fun post to follow and I am sure you feel like you almost know him and I couldn't take him after spending that much time following him around. It would be great if he makes it to next year and see what his head gear looks like. I was hoping you would get a photo or two of him with hard horns and he sure is a looker.
Thanks for putting in the time and sharing the photos.

Isn't this awfully early to be shedding velvet? I have killed bucks in early September that still had velvet. Any others in that area already shed?

Great stories/pics. I wouldn't be able to shoot him either.

I have really enjoyed your thread Mike. I would also have a hard time killing a "buddy". Good luck this season.

this is my first post on this buck, but i've followed it all the way. thanks for sharing, it was very cool watching him grow!

just a thought, but if you think this buck might get hunted by someone else, i think you should try and take him yourself.

with all the work you have into him, noone deserves to look at him, for the rest of their lives, more than you.

if you really think he has a shot of making it if you dont hunt him , thats great! i cant wait to see pics of him next year!

but if there is a chance of someone else , just lucking into the special buck, i'd say you should go for it. if he's going to end up on someones wall---- it sould be yours!

again, thanks for taking the time to post all these pics of a very cool buck!
