I was able to get lucky and draw the second rifle hunt in New Mexico for unit 2b. I plan on goin down there scouting in a couple weeks. What are your experiences down there. Is it a meat hunt like some say or is it really a trophy hunt?

I drew a tag there two years ago. It's the only time I've laid foot in the unit. I saw mass quantities of deer. Like any place, trophies are trophies because they are rare. Any time you have that many deer, there are going to be some good ones surviving from year to year.

There are basically three chances at a trophy. A local that hangs year round, the best chance on your hunt. One that makes a mistake and steps over from the Jicarilla. An early migrater from Colorado, every unliklely unless there is unseasonably early snow.

If I were in your shoes, I'd scout as much as possible concentrating on walk in areas near the lake. That's where I saw the best bucks. I'd also scout the Jicarilla boundary.

Don't worry about all the gas wells. The deer pay no attention to them, but they do make it hard to find a quiet place to camp.

I still apply every year and will go back if I draw. You will have a good time. How much better can hunting be than knowing you are on ground where big ones fall every year?
