Going into Wyo high country solo. Which phone, company, deal should I deal with to assure safety and 10 mins of carcass party? I have seen 40$/week min for the rental but they want 100$ minute package, plus shipping.
I will use this only for emergency puposes and /or success phone call. Some have free incoming. Is this something that I can take advantage of?
Experience, weight, package, use, what do you guys know that I do not?
Thanx Hookiller

I have used a company named Mobal in the past - they have a per day rental fee and a price per minute charge (you only pay for the minutes you use). They had free shipping (FedEx) both ways which was nice. The phone worked well (you had to get out in the open), but it was not light - especially with a back-up battery. However, the weight was worth the piece of mind for all involved.

Anything but Globalstar. All I hear is that they suck and Iridium is the only way to go. I guess Golbalstar's satellites have been falling out of the sky.....

Good luck.

I have used one the last two years in eastern Nevada. I am not sold at all on them for the price you pay. You practically have to be on top of a ridge for them to get a good signal and not get dropped repeatedly. If you are looking for a way to let your loved ones know your ok or communicated with the proper authorities if things go bad then a SPOT is the way to go. You can own one for the price of 1 SAT phone rental. JMO.

I have rented them and have friends that own them for business reasons.
Although I have never used one just to shoot the breeze with someone, the 2 times I used it as an emergency tool it was flawless.

A pilot friend that has one, must be in contact 24-7 and he says he has never lost a call on his, or been anywhere in the world it would not work.

I now have the "Find Me SPOT" unit and it has yet to lose it's signal anywhere I have been and where I live, our sunlight is 2 days old.

i'm taking the Mobal.com iridium sat phone with me in 15 minutes for 8 days in NV.

$15 per day with the $6 loss/damage coverage. $9 per day rental

$1.99 per minute of airtime

recieve text msg free.

We used a phone from explorer satellite last year. They offer a discount for Huntin' Fool members. I think we rented for a month and it was $50. Supposed to be $1 per minute but we used 2 minutes just to check in at home and they let it slide at no charge. If I needed one again I'd go with them.
