LAST EDITED ON Aug-17-09 AT 12:09PM (MST)[p]well opening morning i decided to go on the mountain and seen a few buck but they were mostly on private, the ones we did see that were not on private were not big enough to shoot. That night i decided to hunt in my uncles fields and seen plenty of deer i took a shot at a nice 4pt, i guessed him at 40 yards and he ended up being about 60 yards. DONT FORGET YOUR RANGEFINDER!!!! here is the video.

Tough break on the miss man... That was a beautiful buck! Hope you get another crack at him...

As far as the rangefinder, I gotta agree that in your case right there, it would have been beneficial... However, I do not own one, and would not use one regularly. My cousin decided to "invest" in one this year. He had a great buck in front of him on Saturday, broadside and completely unaware of him. He decided to range him rather than go with his gut on a 35 yard shot. He raised the rangefinder and the buck caught the movement... He was 33 yards, and when my cousin drew, he walked into some bruch, and disappeared...

In your video, you could have definitely ranged the big boy, but having an inherent sense of distance after practicing all summer will benefit a hunter much more...

Again, good luck gettin on that deer again...!!!!

Unfortunately this season has taught me the same lesson. No rangefinder on our first hunt this year and found 2 very mature bucks. put our stalk on them and closed the distance quickly. Popped over the edge of a draw and they were closer than we thought and they busted. Had a 28" wide 4x4 standing perfectly broadside to me just asking to be arrowed. The terrain threw me off and I guessed his range at 70. after watching him trot off after a 5 minute stare down I walked the range and he was 45 yards. Will never make that mistake again. he wouldnt have spooked as he allowed me to nock an arrow and pull my quiver off all while watching me. That morning has angered me for the last few weeks and I am sure will continue to piss me off for years to come.

I just posted this on the archery forum. Have you seen the rangefinders that you attach to your sight? I just read about them in Field and Stream. They look like a really cool concept. Not sure how great they are, does anydody have any experience with these? The are made by a company called Bad River Outdoors. THeir website is appropriately called badriveroutdoors.com. Check them out, they look pretty cool.
