270 WIN Question

What are your thoughts in regards to using a 130 grain bullet on muledeer with a 270 WIN rifle? Also, what type of distance should be max for shooting the 270 WIN with a 130 grain bullet at a muledeer? I know that many say it all depends on shot placement, which I fully understand. However, I just want to know other hunters thoughts regarding the grain and distance.

Thank you,

Utaz

I love a 270 win, I have one in a Rem 700 and its my favorite rifle.

I'd think you would be fine with a 130 gr bullet 400-500 yds being the max distance.

I mainly use my 270 to hunt whitetails (gasp!) & I use 130's. The longest shot I can recall shooting one tho has been around 300 yds and it really ruined his day!

I have shot mule deer in 5 different states with a 130 gr 270 bullet. Never had to shoot more than once, and have never lost one. One of the top combinations for mule deer.(In my book anway)

I have a 270 that i use on elk and deer. Farthest I have ever shot with it was 550 at an elk he never even moved once. great gun max is around six i would say if you feel comfortable shooting that far.

Utaz I use a 270 for a lot of my hunting. I would say a 130gr would be fine for mule deer out to 400 or 500. I would be more concerned with the bullet. I would go with a 130gr nosler accubond or Ballistic tip. Good luck!

I have been shooting that combination for years. I personally feel it's great for mule deer.. I have killed several over the years out to 400+ yards and I have never been dispointed, never lost a deer and with the exception of one the rest were one shot kills.

Go for it. Stay within your limits for range. If you plan on shooting 300yds find a range an practice. I like the 270 it is a fairly flat shooter out to about 300 yds.

One of my favorite calibers.

I agree that bullet selection is more important than just about anything. I really like the Nosler Acubonds (or even partitions) in the 130 or 140 grain, I have also had pretty good luck with the 130gr Barnes tripples.

I think it's the best nonmagnum round there is-next to the 270WSM :)

i currently shoot a 270 win but i shoot a 140 grain hornady btsp. and i have knock down power out to 650-700, not saying i would take that shot but the gun is capable of doing it. im zeroed at 300 yards and am 4 inches high at 100. and roughly 4.5 low at 600. i killed my deer last year at 350 and dropped him in his tracks. the bullet never went through either. best deer caliber in my opinion

No less authority than Jack O'Connor said: Let there be a .270, loaded with a 130 grain bullet.

I've now switched to a .30 caliber but shot many deer and elk with a 130 grain bullet. I can't say I needed to switch, but I have 4 .270s....needed to get a different gun.

Within the shadows, go quietly.

Perfect combination for mule deer. I don't shoot over 400 yards with mine - maybe I'm just not confident enough. The ballistics would indicate adequate performance out further but the drop and drift start to get pretty bad (the 130gr bullet doesn't have great a great BC).

Hope you have a great hunt this year - where are you hunting?

DidIDraw,

I'll be hunting Utah the Northeastern unit on the Oct 16th and then Kaibab Northern AZ the first week of November.

270 is a great flat shooting caliber. Most rifles shoot the 130's best and alot of people would not consider shooting anything, but 130's out of the 270.

Great gun and caliber, I own four of them. Practice, confidence and shot placement for any caliber is the awnser.

I don't care what kind of bullet you're shooting through that .270 Win, YOU ARE NOT "ZEROED AT 300yds and 4.5" LOW AT 600"!!!! NOT EVEN CLOSE!! When you say stuff like that, your credibility goes out the window!

I do like a 270 Winchester though! Great Cartridge! In the hands of a marksman, all the gun, a hunter taking game up to and approaching Elk, would ever need.

My wife shoots a 270. I loaded up some 110 tsx tip Barns bullets for her at a muzzle velocity at 3350 fps. Sighted in at 200 yards she about 1. inch high at 100 and 5.3 low at 300 yards. At 600 yards its going 2019 and has 995.ft/lbs. Last year she took her buck at 300 yards with one shot.

hhunter23 ,

where do you come up with these numbers?...LMAO !

your about 40" off of your "estimated" drop at 600 yards...Nice try thanks for playing....

I have owned a shot a .270 for over 40 years. Have reloaded for it over 35. O'Conner made the .270 with the 130 grain, but he never had access to the 140 grain. A much better bullet than the 130 will shoot flater than tha 130 at over 300 yds. Shot my 140's 31/4 high at a hundred just remember 1,3 5 this means approximately 1 foot low at 400yds. 3 foot low at 500 and 5 foot low at 600. If you 130 shooters start shooting 140's you will never go back. By the way my favorite caliber is the .280 rem. just a BETTER .270.

I have used the 130 for 14 years now, Elk, muleys, whitetails. I like the winchester power point out of it the best! Great bullets and every animal went down in his tracks! Check out Remington.com's ballistics charts and compare bullet grains/performance. The 130 hits harder, flies flatter and faster than any other bullet other than the 150 at 100 yds. Great choice and it will not let you down!

That is all I use for Mule and whitetail deer. At least in my gun, I found that the .270 with 130 grain is the best combo. I wouldn't be afraid to shoot out to 400yards.

140's do very well in my gun too! I just like the 130 because thats what I've always shot in my 270, getting ready for my 15th season with my 270. I like Accubonds the best.

As with all shots, bullet placement kills game. I haveshot several deer and antelope with a 243 winchester.Your 270 will be great.

I should have re-read that prior to posting -
I have only killed 2 deer at 400+ yards, the rest were not.

I shoot a Weatherby Mk. V, in 270 Weatherby mag. with factory 140gr Nosler Ballistic tips. I group 3 rounds inside 1/2 in. at a hundred yds. It is the finest shooting rifle I own! I have had it for only two seasons now and the longest shot was 114yds at a Mule deer. I aimed just below the cheek (so as not to destroy any meat) and he dropped where he stood. I would not hesitate to shoot Deer or Elk out to 600yds with this gun. I have a Leupold scope with bullet drop compensating marks that further provides confidence.

I like 130's for deer. I've seem more deer drop in there tracks with a .270 and 130's than anything else, hey how do you think I came up with my name?
