Scoreing

I think people need to learn how to score befor they post their pictures on the site. So people that are jugeing animals or are learning how to hunt get a ture impression what a real 200" or 190" deer is. They look stupid with a 170" buck thinking its a 200" deer because of some of the post on this site. Whats your thoughts???

I think most is just not knowing the "how to" of scoring vs intentionally misleading. But you definitely see the "30 inch" and "190" labels used more often than should be applied. Then you throw in the NET vs GROSS and B&C vs SCI etc etc...can make judging from pics and magazines a little iffy.

I mostly agree. It's one thing to take a guess on a score and post it up, and it's something else to mis-score or blatantly lie. You have to take all scores posted here with a hefty grain of salt.

At the same time, it's also difficult to judge score by a picture or two. Sometimes (though rarely) that 170"-looking buck really is closer to 200". And sometimes vice-versa.

Most issues, I think, come from misunderstanding how to score (measuring the mainbeam as another point is very common or taking outside spread instead of inside spread, etc.) or from people guessing and being off by a lot.

While I don't think we should focus just on score, I also think it's great that folks post their scores (even if estimates) on the animals they post as it helps the rest of us learn to better field-judge and score the animals we see.

My thoughts are, "Who cares!!!" Post your photos regardless if you know how to score or not!! ???? That's like saying people should learn how to spell before posting on the site....(scoreing, befor, jugeing, ture, its, post) LOL......WHO CARES!!! We know what you're saying, just as we can look at a photo, regardless what the poster says it scores, and think what we want.

I would never want people to stop posting photos here because other people might not think their animal scores what they say it does. First of all, it really doesn't matter what an animal scores. If someone is proud, post the photo for us all to enjoy. Second of all, if someone posts their photo and a score that other people don't think matches, then so what. The viewer can think what they want.

I will agree that I think some scores seem to not match a photo (on this site and in magazines), but I know for a fact that often times, photos are deceiving. Even when looking at an animal alive on the hoof, guessing a score can be tough. Looking at a photo is even harder.

In the end, EVERYONE should post their photos REGARDLESS if someone else on this site agrees with their scoring or not. That's what I think...

Hell?LOL Brain you get paid for each post??? I thought I just ask a question and look what happened to me. And yes it seems like score is everything or nobody would put a score to their animal. If nothing else its people that shoot big animals win your contests I don't see a little kid with a doe WIN size does matter. Its web sites like this that make people want to score their animals and do the best they can to be successful in the field or poach big animals??? Is there something wrong with that? All I think is know before you score or ask but not blow a score out of your behind. And NO I NEVER WAS AN ENGLISH MAJOR I just posted because who cares everyone knew what I had to say. Add a spell check for people like myself. Now are you going to kick me off your site??? So the question is why do you care so much??? I hit a sour spot and sorry, but I was not calling anyone out on their score just asking if anyone felt the same way I did. Why don't you point out people?s scores that are not true like my misspelled words? WHO CARES??? AND WHEN THE ANIMAL IS DEAD THERE IS NO RESON FOR A WRONG SCORE, FIELD SCOREING YES!!! Please check my grammar.

Look what happened to you???? What happened to you? You asked for thoughts, I gave you mine...???

Why would I kick you off my site? That's question is.....never mind. I have no reason to kick you off the site.

Anyway, you asked for peoples thoughts, and those were mine. I would hate for people to stop posting photos because they might not know how to score correctly. I like seeing the photos, even if the claimed score is off by 1000 inches. I don't care! If it's big, it's big. If it's huge, it's huge. If it's just ok, then it's just ok. Regardless what the claim to score is. I don't need a score to tell me what's big and what isn't.

Sorry if you feel like I attacked you, I really didn't mean to come off like that. I just gave you my opinion.

My thoughts are......
Before you go telling people how to score before they post their pictures, you should learn how to spell before you post your words.

I'm just saying.... ;-)

LAST EDITED ON Aug-25-09 AT 05:36PM (MST)[p]Sneekee I have to say I do understand what you are saying. I also must say that for me personally there are a few things that I couldnt let go. I think that it is a site like this that has HELPED me and others realize what a 170" buck looks like and what a 200" buck looks like. Not that it matters all that much. I would be more than excited for either! This site has taught me so much information in the way of hunting, reloading and general knowlegde. Also many people are here to help a fellow hunter with areas to hunt as well as lend a hand. You should hope brian doesnt kick you off this site. You might be able to learn a thing or two but I doubt it.

See I'm right we all need some education before we post with Spelling and Scoring and what ever else. Remember size does matter or scoring wouldn't be nor MonsterMuleys.com all in good fun. Face it hunting is not about meat anymore its about Size like it or not and money for some of you.

All I'm saying is I'm sick of hearing what it scores just post the picture unless you know what it really scores for sure. Leave it to us to guess or if you don't know leave it to it's a big buck. Yes I have got caught up in scoring and it's made hunting not as fun and more stressful. I get sick of the first question you hear when you kill a deer, what's the score? So either say I don't give an F or find out instead of guess.

I agree that many people have gotten really caught up in "score". I personally don't even post what bucks I have killed score, except maybe when someone asks. I feel that if someone can look at a couple pictures, then they don't need a score. They can just decide on their own whether it's big or not.

But, I have no problem with other people posting scores, and I sure wouldn't want folks to stop posting photos. Not only because this is my livelyhood, but also because I like seeing them.

I will admit though, I like guessing the scores and then finding out if I'm any good or not. Just a challenge and something to waste time doing.

Remember score was almost never talked about by the average hunter a decade or two ago-it was always spread. With modern times and hunting not being about meat MUCH anymore we are all learning alot. All the pics and quessing sure make it more fun which is what it is suppossed to be! This site has alot of new timers and old timers and everyone who has a good idea of scoreing must agree that it sure helps to categorize overall size which is sometimes difficult to tell by a pic. Its all a learning process and everyone has to start somewhere! Guessing is sure fun though!

I just want everyone to know I think MM is a Great site and a very educational site too, I never said it wasn?t. I think guess the score is great; bring it on that helps us all help judge deer. All I was saying is when its dead than go to B&C get a score sheet and at least try to get some what close if you're going to put a score or ask someone to help, god knows we all love to hold a big rack.

Not trying to gain any points here, if so i'd be sure to lose em as fast as i got them, but i'm i agreement with Founder.

I also was interested to hear his take on the non-issue of spelling. I've been put down on this site a time or to because of the apparent appearance, due to my spelling and grammar, of a lack of or due to, a poor education. To that, or them, i tip my hat that i may not have been as well schooled in my a-b-c's as they have but then again, i'm not the azzhoe about it either. :)

LAST EDITED ON Aug-25-09 AT 07:57PM (MST)[p]I think that for the average hunter, meat is more important than score. I would say that alot of the hunters on this site are definately not average and score is important to them. For me, I love killing big bucks... but more often than not, I kill a lesser buck for the freezer.I have learned so much about score and tons of other helpful info from this site. I think that its great when somebody posts their scores, even when they're wrong, somebody on this site will correct them.

Here's an idea for Founder or anyone who wants to take the time to do it. Why not create some videos showing how to properly score a deer, elk, antelope, etc. That way we can all learn where and how to take each measurement. It would be good to highlight the major mistakes people make too. I know that watching a B&C scorer actually go through the process of measuring a deer answered a lot of questions I had. Maybe this type of thing already exists, but I've never seen it anywhere.

If a guys going to lie about the score there is no way to change it, but it might be nice to have something like that as a reference.

I could care less if someone posts a picture and gives the wrong score! That is their issue not mine.

What does correcting them and calling them out on this site accomplish? Does it make our own WEEWEE grow a little?

Get over the 197 post.

Ok ok, my apology to 2sneekee for stealing his thunder.

I just thought it ironic that he was critisizing people for their shortfalls of scoring abilities......

My bad, i retract my statement, especially as i will have grammar issues myself at times, along with misjudging a few scores. :)

LAST EDITED ON Aug-26-09 AT 04:24PM (MST)[p]I think it would be a good idea to place some score sheets on the site so people that are learning can learn, there is not a better place than MM to get the info. I shot a 90" antelope and was stoked than found out it was 80", I had to learn for myself and was telling people it was 90" tell I was corrected by some who could score and didn't want me to look like a DA that's when I learned how. I didn't care about score, but a guy wanted to score the animal in the field when I shot it, he even had a score sheet and still messed up by adding the spread. Here is a site for those who want to learn.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-15-09 AT 11:03PM (MST)[p]It's funny that I came across this post, because I was just thinking after looking at some photos in the forum that people need to learn how to score better.

SCORE DOES MATTER!!!!!!!!!!!

Scoring is the language of hunting, photography etc.

If someone tells me about a 196" buck with six inches of trash, I can picture this buck in my head. This way I know whether I want to spend a week looking for it to photograph or kill, or not. There is a big difference between a 196" buck and a 176" buck. If I were to pay good money for a hunt or photo safari and the person told me there were 200" class bucks and 380" class bulls, but there were really only 170s bucks and 330 bulls. I'm going to be one pissed mother...

P.S. Check out Eastman's "Mule Deer Stalker I" It's an excellent resource for learning how to field judge muleys.

Thanks coopersdesign i'm glad you understand, i just think know before you score

Sneakee,
I sure hope you didn't post a pic of that speedgoat with the score :)
I look at it like this. If you don't agree with the score someone posted....don't read it...just look at the pics and enjoy the fact that we still see some good animals getting harvested. I especially like the ones with kids or ladies. Keep posting and add scores if you want to :)

I didn't post it with a wrong score, if I even posted it. I found out within a few days of the kill of what it really scored after I found out for myself. I had someone that thought he could score, that should have learned how to before he volunteered to score my animal and others. All it takes is a little research, I knew he was wrong after a little research. I personally like to look at big animals for myself and if it's big I look, if it small I don't, that me. But when you see a big score and a little animal it's disappointing so what I'm trying to say if you care about score than get it right. If you don't care about score just post it without one. Everyone should post big or small, but if you don't want to look or have a good animal get dogged on because the hunter is uneducated on score and puts an outrages score on a nice animal and makes a respected 170? be a 200? deer, it's not fair to the animal to get dogged on, dog on the guy who misjudged the animal, that all I'm saying?
