I was up on cedar mountain above brian head deer hunting this week. Sunday evening I put up my trail camera on a small water hole. As I am coming out from the water hole I see another hunter walking in on the same trail. I stop and talk to him for several minutes. I first asked him if he was hunting the same water because I was going to move somewhere else if he was. He said he was not and was just hiking by the water on his way up the hill further to access some meadows. He also said he was hunting spike elk and not deer. Because of how and where my camera was mounted I knew he would see it. So I told him it was there and also told him I had seen some elk sign in the area. I then offered to share with him any photos of elk I might get on my camera. I also told him of an area where I knew a large number of elk were hanging out. After several minutes of conversation we went our seperate ways.

The next morning I go back in to check my camera and it is gone. I didn't actually see this guy take it but I checked the trail and the only sets of tracks on the trail were mine and his. I could not find any other tracks. This spot where the camera was is an out of the way place that doesn't get many people. Partially because you have to come in from private property. I am shocked that another hunter would do this. I have never had a problem with fellow hunters in the past.

I am sure he or someone he knows visits this site so I am asking for any help I can get to retrieve my camera. I have my name and phone # written in large black marker on the back. It is a scoutguard sg550 camo in color. What I know about this guy is that he was driving a white toyota pickup with a matching white camper shell. He has a spike elk tag. He told me he lives in cedar city but had to be to work monday morning 08-24-09. He said he worked in st george as a welder. He is a white guy early to mid twenties about 5'10", 160 lbs with brown hair and he had his ears pierced. He was carrying a PSE bow and was wearing Scentlock pants and jacket.

Cedar City isn't that big of a town so I am sure someone knows who this guy is. If anyone will be willing to help me recover my camera I will offer a reward.

What a fricken joke this is getting to be. This must be the 5th or 6th post I've seen of someone reporting a stolen camera. Hope you catch whoever took it.

Even if you find this guy, what can you do? I doubt he's going to fess up. You have a good hunch but no proof. Good Luck.

Man, there have been a lot of postings about this crap. Sad to see! Dude with piercings? My money is on him as the perp.

If you used the right methods, I'm sure that you could coerce a confession out of him. LOL

coues, You're right about coercing a confession. It's been my experience that your tit usually ends up in the ringer and brings more trouble with Johnny Law Dog than it's worth. What methods work for you?

Two thoughts:

A - I for one highly doubt this dude took the camera you left on public land. If he did, he is one dumb fool after telling you all about himself. My guess is, if he took it, he doesn't have it. Maybe he just thinks the thought of trail cams is just as sad as you think his taking it is.

B - you left your camera visible in public. You really think every idiot out there that passes it is going to leave it be?

Personally - I have no issue with trail cams, and I hope you get it back. I do however take a lot of issue with some of the damage fellow hunters are doing in placing cameras and placing "bait" out to catch critters on the cameras. Sad if you ask me. I guarantee there are a lot that share my opinion, but won't say it.

dont get mad get even hit the area up when you find his truck put it on blocks sale the tires&rims buy a new camara take your wife out to eat with the extra cash

Next time, hang a pair of binoculars on the same tree and then make sure and tell everyone who walks by. See how long it takes before they go missing...

I pretty much share it.

There ARE alot of trail cam pics now with Mule deer licking there lips. I think alot of the eastern tricks are taking hold out west. It's a whole different style of hunting that alot of muley hunters aren't really down with. So some cameras over bait my just get tossed out into the deep sage.

5'10" 160, that's about the right a$$ whoopin size! you know if ts not yours don't touch it! I know you guys all want to say if you left it, you abandoned it! bs just like let me catch some guy messing with my trailer while im out hunting! there will only be one side to tell the judge! my side! I hate thieves!

Thanks to all those offering support and help with this!

I never said anything about bait. Never have used bait. If you want to discuss the ethics of baiting over a trail camera please start your own thread.

It's sad that guys can't leave something alone that isn't theirs.

I've had two cameras stolen from my ranch near Richfield. I put them out to find who was trespassing, and the guy stole the camera and solar charger. I can't imagine why people can't just leave them alone.

I now have a metal box that I lag bolt to the tree, then chain and padlock to the tree. Sucks to have to do that, but I can't afford to lose cameras.

Good luck finding the guy that stole it.

You should of told him you had a "few" trail cams out so he would never know if he walked by one or not.

Well, that guy you talked to may or may not have stole your trailcam. You really have no way of knowing, but since the guy gave you so much personal info he would have to be pretty stupid to turn around and swipe your cam. I know, I know, you Sherlock Holmesd the whole area looking for boot tracks and all, but you could still be wrong. Accusing the dude like you have done on this public forum is pretty lame

I agree with the guy that told you to hang your binoculars in a tree and see if someone takes them. Next time secure the cam better and you will probably find it right where you left it when you come back.

As I mentioned on another post, go check e-bay. Also, you might also wade around in your water hole, he could of just chucked in it there. Just a thought.

For the people that said, "go hang your binoculars in a tree and see if they get stolen", I think you are way too harsh. Theft is theft no matter where the item is located. It is no different than if your elk horns gets stolen at the taxidermist or your deer gets stolen off the meat pole (how many of those posts are on this site?). I bet if your car got stolen at Walmart, you would be witchin' about it. I mean afterall you left it there, why shouldn't someone steal it? It is no different. No one deserves to get stolen from no matter where the item is located and it is not Viking's fault.

Viking did the right thing by letting this guy know he had a cam in the area since he knew the guy would walk past it. That was Viking's way of saying, "I can identify you, don't steal my cam." In my personal opinion, ear ring guy either has balls of steel or someone else stole the cam. I disagree, it is not lame for Viking to follow up on the only lead he has by posting info about this guy since he didn't name the guy personally. Even if someone PM's Viking with ear ring guy's identity and it turns out that ear ring guy didn't do it, Viking can follow up with ear ring guy to see if he may have saw someone in the area that may have stolen the cam. I hope you catch the thief Viking. Maybe the next time this thief will steal from some of you critics and we can read your post.

Whatever you do after you catch the perp and start the interrogation, do not blow smoke in his face. Do not threaten that you will harm his children. Do not threaten to have Bubba take care of his wife. Do not fake an execution of the guys neighbor. Do not waterboard him. If you do any of these harsh interrogations you could be in a whole can of whoopass by the Osama administration. If I were you.....shoot him 6 times in the chest and face. Game over.

Spoon....Hopefully, you are a "countersunk" archer. In which case I would probably accept your invitation.

Alternativly, I would decline.

Even at my age, there are still some "places" that I have never been, nor do I ever wish to go.

I even still have some parts of my anatomy that are reserved only for the occasional proctologist..... I recieve NO satisfaction from his "visits".

I hope you understand. It's just not my style.

One question however, do those gold lamme' loafers help you get closer to deer?

take (his wife) out to eat.. lol

Check the pioneer shopper for it too.
The guy probaly got it and figured if my picture is on it so what, prove I took it, If it isn't up for sale by now it being used in the woods right now, Hope it get's stolen from him now.

What laws if any prohibit leaving personal property unattended overnight on public property? If is against the law then someone taking something placed illegally is not quite the same as stealing truck from WalMart parking lot.

Damn outdoors, really? good luck this season, I hope and pray you drop your gun or binos this year and the lucky guy keeps your !!!! then I bet you'll be crying a different tune!

Disturbing.

The bottom line here is; "If it dosen't belong to you, leave it alone".

Pretty much should end the discussion, but it won't.

People have no respect for other peoples property, rights or person, and any of you guys that think it's OK to mess with someones stuff, are azzholes.

Amen nickman. If your out taking trail cameras down on the premise that... ooh! it's public land and it's free game! This is MY water hole. Who does this guy think he is putting a camera on MY water hole? I think I'll take his camera home...what a dou---bag. who ever it might be.

I would like to go out in the woods and have the reasonable expectation of a little privacy and not get caught on someones trail cam.

great post/pic, thanks for sharing

it does suck when you get your pic taken by surprise, you got to wonder what dumb look you have on your face!

It does suck that some people are complete scum and steal anything they come across. I dont think I would ever leave a trail camera on public land with out securing it the best I could with some kind of lock box or chain. To many stories on here about missing trail cameras.

I have had plenty of things stolen from me, it dont seem to matter if things are locked up in your truck or tucked away in your camp anything of value is subject to be stloen by scum bags, sad but true.

I hope you get your camera back from whoever took it.

I am sorry the trail camera was stolen. I hope the thief is caught or has an unpleasant death when tripping over something they stole.

I do wonder sometimes how our indignation varies over various illegal behavior on public lands.

Are there some laws our hunting community can violate on public lands and still be "good" folks? Seems protecting trail cams is a law we support but how about operation of ATVs? You know, kick over a few signs at the trailhead then the real hunting can begin! I got a bad back and all so wink wink nod nod and hold on grandkid while grandpa shows you how hunting is really done. Zoom zoom.

How is this illegal behavior anymore acceptable than poaching a deer from all of us or stealing a trail cam from one of us?

For the record, if the trail cam was unlocked and I could easily pop out the SD card to view in my camera then I would. Is there anyone who frowns on this but is okay with illegal ATV use? Curious.

"For the record, if the trail cam was unlocked and I could easily pop out the SD card to view in my camera then I would. Is there anyone who frowns on this but is okay with illegal ATV use? Curious

............Yeah, I frown on it and if you cannot see the difference between a harmless trailcam and illegal ATV use, then you are a pretty sorry piece of work!

JB...I don't view it as an invasion of privacy,(well, except for that time with the duck), I more see it as an opportunity to display my "package".

i hate to see stuff get stole but its your fault if you dont want it stole dont buy it then put it where you know its not for shore safe then cry about someone looking at your card then crying somemore about how it came up missing my piont is anything can get stolen from anywhere at any time my truck window got smashed in they took my pack 2000$ worth in it and the only dumbass i blame is myself for leaving it in there i dont cry about how some drug attic pawned my ##### for a fix but if i find him he wont be grabbin nothing else ill have his hands tied to my ball hitch then ill go boose cruisin in the desert for the night just my opinion dont leave it out for anyone to do anything you dont want done to it

Cutting tires at a trailhead is not like murder so should we limit discussion to only murder?
