dumb question

Ok,
I'm sure everyone who hunts the central deer unit knows about the changed/ short dates, in the nebo loop area.

this is supposedly to help with the buck/doe ratio.

this i understandable, short hunt should mean lower harvest numbers.
but why then are there still doe tags? is this to pad the buck to doe ratio? instead of managing the heard just wipe out the does to get the ratio numbers in check?

doe's = bucks right or wrong?

why not close the whole thing for a year and see what that does?

didn't we learn on the SE region that a 5 day hunt DID NOT LOWER THE HARVEST numbers? it actually increased the total reported bucks taken, and the number of 1-2 year bucks actually doubled.

i guess i don't get the big picture

You make a great point... I didn't understand the shorter hunts then, and I don't really understand this one. The truth is...

When you shorten the hunt like this, more hunters opt to hunt the ENTIRETY of the hunt (5 days) rather than say...opening day, and the next Friday and Saturday (3 days). So by shortening a hunt, the days spent hunting afield by the average joe hunter actually increases 66.66% (from 3 to 5 days). Spending that high of a percent more time in the field guarantess more bucks harvested...

And as far as buck-to-doe ratios, you may be onto something there as well. It's a numbers game. Lowering the doe numbers increases the buck-to-doe ratio. It's sad to think that the people responsible for OUR wildlife's management would do such a despisable thing, and I hope it's not true, but it sounds like it just might be...

Sounds like something that they would do. This is why more people need to get involved behind the scenes more. If anybody has ever been to one of the dwr meetings where they discuss things like that. You would see that its like seven people some of whom probably have never hunted making up rules and then voting between them selves to put the rules in stone. No offense to these people they all have they're degrees and things like that haha

I don't care what they have on paper with the SE unit(Monticello). But I'm seeing bigger bucks now after the 5 day seasons so it must of worked for that reason. If you see what type of deer has come off this area in SE they was alot smaller, it has showed up again this archery season nicer and bigger bucks have been coming into the locker plant, so I would love to see this plan in more area's in southern and central Hell I wish they would shut This part of the SE down for a couple of years then re-open it with less tags. It takes age to get big deer.

the results of the five day hunt are very clear.
there was a 37% increase of deer taken during the 5 day hunt vrs the full hunt.
of this 3% 90% of them were 1 to 3 year old bucks.

so ya i have no doubt your seeing bigger bucks where you hunt,
I NEVER SAID IT WAS A BAD THING DID I???????????

you also have to factor in the weather this year,
A mild winter,+ a very dry mild spring + a cooler, wetter than normal summer.
this is a perfect scenerio for large healthy deer.

So the point i am making, DO NOT MANIPULATE THE BUCK TO DOE RATIO BY HARVESTING MORE DOES, AND GOING TO A PLAN THAT TAKES MORE YOUNG BUCKS.

is that clear enough now?

The places I have been there is more bucks too, the number of bucks taken might have climded but the amount of buck as climbed in what is left on the mountain. Heck the road bewteen Monticello and Blanding kill almost as many as the hunters do.
Put up a fence in that area would save alot of good deer EACH year.

I too would like to see them close the season for a year.
I get what your saying, it just that with bigger bucks it working for what we want BIGGER BUCKS now finish the program and shut it down for a year then re-open it with less tags.

you cannot have quality without quantity EVER.

One other thing to consider is that the Nebo rifle doesn't start until the rest of the central unit rifle hunt is half over. I believe it starts on the Wednesday after the opener, so maybe DNR is counting on a lot of guys to already be tagged out in other areas by the time Nebo opens... It could work, but it could really hurt other areas.

You can increase buck size by manipulating doe harvest

You cannot have high quanity and high quality....LOL.

In theory, the antlerless hunts are based solely on population objectives. (i.e. winter range condition) If the winter range will not support the deer, I would rather increase the Buck/Doe ratio.
This is assuming the politicians are listening to the biologists. (Politics can make a mess out of about anything)
My 2 cents.
