WY DIY Backcountry Buck Down

Just returned from the hardest backcountry hunt of my life and was rewarded with a dandy, old buck that I am very proud of! Even with the lack of front forks he still scores in the mid 180" range! I look forward to getting back there to go after some of the other bruisers in the area!

That is a super sweet buck. He really has a great look to him, especially looking straight at him. Nice work and congrats!

Nice one, Congrats!

Great buck! That ol' boy has an awesome cape... You'll have to post some pics when you get him on the wall.

Very, very cool! Did you find that WY backcountry as lonely as I did opening week? Love it up there. Congrats! Was he starting to strip or is the velvet a casualty of a hard crash death?

Nice job on a dandy buck. That BC sure is steep and rough. LOL
Looks like you found a good spot.

Thanks everyone! It was a tough hunt to say the least. The buck was killed near 10,000' and the rippe dup velvet was a result from the additional 100 yards he tumbled after he decided to quit breathing! It was one heck of a tumble let me tell ya!

I watched this buck the previous 4 mornings from close to a 1 1/2 miles away and he was always on the same ridge in the morning but quickly headed for shade as soon as the sun layed its rays on the ridge. I headed out the afternoon before and got on the ridge below where the buck feeds at about dark, layed out the sleeping bag and caught a few winks. Next morning he was farther up the ridge with a mid 180" buck that looked young. I set out for "Too Tall" and that is the buck I wanted to shoot, no other at this time. The sun was coming up above the peak fast and I knew I had to move in.....a 25 yard shot had him down for the count! A heavy pack of 80+ pounds and many miles to go made it rough on the body....especially getting caught in a heck of a hail storm.....made the pack that much heavier!

Thanks Roy! I was using the Alaskan Outfitter by Cabelas. Pretty good external frame pack. I am pleased with its performance and the room/options it has to offer.
